I love how you go back over your performance afterwards to see where things can get better next time. That's a good lesson for all of us who are learning.
love it! and...fuck overthinking, you are doing great, enjoy the process, here is my favourite quote: "you already achieved the goals you said would make you happy". Sometimes a bit of perspective helps in this process, cheers!
I liked your tone on that mouthpiece, personally I have two tenor mouthpieces, one that cuts and a more mellow one. Tenor range gets lost more in the mix so sometimes you just need that extra boost from a more powerful mouthpiece.
Post-gig thoughts in the car keeps it real, but ik after a gig you want to just get home sometimes, whatever works best for you. Love you sharing your experiences!
Loving the new look, Frankie!!! Great vlog man (JD ate on that first chart and left NO crumbs - rest of the band was slick, hope you loved the gig! PS: I'm OK with whatever you do with post-gig thoughts - whether it's in the car or not! Treadmill's sick as well)
As a guitar player, I REALLY enjoyed this guy’s playing 🎸 also, post-gig reflections in the car seem like your MO, so I say keep it regardless of the lighting lol
Yeah lol not watching it for the cinematic quality! Lots of RU-vidrs get caught going for high production quality, but that's not needed for vlogs, authentic low quality is ideal
Keep doing the poorly lit car debriefs, or at least keep recording them. It's better to have your fresh reaction, because otherwise you will certainly forget things that felt important in that moment. You can always record more later if you have something you'd like to add (like you did in this video)
My high school band director told me a great piece of advice that I will now pass on to you. "Play like you got a pair." Hopefully that will help you project better. You're welcome.
Brian is one of the most dedicated and skillful musicians you will ever meet. Listen carefully to everything he says and cherish the opportunity you have to learn from him!!
I always enjoy your videos! Fellow saxophone player here, I’m opposite of you and have always have had more trouble projecting on alto until I upgraded to the right mouthpiece- turns out that was the last change I needed to really improve! Curious about your setup now, and if you could be due for an upgrade. Keep up the great playing and great videos!!
Thank you so much!! I’ve been experimenting with different mouthpieces on tenor lately, which might be part of the reason why I’m having trouble centering my air. Either way I appreciate it!
for more projection go up a half strength reed or one tip opening size. another thing if you feel the low notes are hard to pop out when you go up strengths and you cant play that strength consistently what you do is get a fresh harder reed and play it for a little bit so that you have to use more air and then move back, and you'll find its a lot easier to get the volume you want. but sometimes its the mouthpiece being to dark and so the air moves too slow even though its beautiful. so you'd want something a little more punchy but not really bright yet. ottolink super tone master, jody jazz hr*, dd select jazz, are some standards. hopefully that helps
I appreciate that. That’s not really the problem. It’s not a loudness issue. It’s more of a precision of airstream issue and voicing incorrectly into tenor so my sound isn’t as focused
Is the sax holder pro worth it? My neckstrap just broke and I had to pick up a neotech one quickly since I had a gig with my school but I'm considering getting a saxholder because I believe it's meant to be better in the long run for your back and neck and all. Great video as well. I love seeing the process of gigging as a working musician!
Your 'deer in headlights' expression is too cute. Start jogging, stronger lungs, capacity, and stamina. Theater people do it all the time, huge difference.
@@FoolishFrankie Good on you, I don't play the sax so I'm not familiar. Nice work though, it's fun to watch you perform. (not in a creepy way-just saying.)
I love your channel, best sax player on this platform. How do you improv solo over songs, I can’t get the hang of it? Specifically, could you help with “hold on I’m comin” arranged by Rodger H.?
Tbh I've been missing that too😭 I miss the days of getting up early on update days to see all of the new emotes and then picking one to try and recreate as fast as possible. I still am playing video game music (just live with my band) and we even play some Fortnite music too! But it's a different thing. Idk. It's hard to find what makes you the happiest and how much of it
