Yes thank you so much I’m not the only one Also take me back to this year and leave me there Edit: I mean the year of the song’s release not the Holocaust - I’m sorry, I can’t say in good faith I want to go there.
Same. Still gives me goosebumps. Takes me back to the emo time in my life when I thought every little inconvenience was the end of the world. Good to see how much I've grown since then. Now nothing can Take Me, Hell No, No!!
This song still kicks ass 20 years later in 2024! Such powerful lyrics, amazing riffs, and emotionally-charged message. When they slow the tempo down...then speed it back up...omg, I melt.
Digging so hard through the big binder-sized CD case so we could jam this at least once while my friend Teresa gave me a ride home Teresa why did you have so many CDs we could have listened to this so much more Side note I was the only person who always wrote track names on my mix cds and this song was probably on all of them Thanks for the memories
The song, described as an "intense and oddly uplifting rocker about a relationship torn by the Holocaust,"[5] by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, is actually semi-biographical in nature, telling the story of songwriter and vocalist Max Bemis's grandparents, both of whom were Holocaust survivors.[5] The song documents the love between two individuals as they live their lives in the ghetto, in hiding, and in the work camp. In an interview, Bemis said: "I thought about what it would be like to be in love and be separated from the person you love, because these times are just as dire in a way. Anything can happen, in a war and terrorist attacks and cynicism and all these actors who oppose love."[5] Naming the song as one of the 100 greatest emo songs of all time, music writer Ian Cohen described the song as "a wildly ambitious and irresponsibly horny piece of musical theater" that "visualized how the primal, procreative urge can still thrive when dead bodies are piling up by the thousands in front of you."
Who else suddenly had this pop into their heads 20 years later right before going to sleep? (Also, can you believe this song is practically 20 years old?! I remember recording this video off Fuse or MTV onto one of my two “Fave Muzik” VHSs! 😅)
I love bands such as...Khanate..Neurosis...Minor threat etc...this album is actually catchy..and I dislike admitting I dug it..taking back sunday is on that list too....MCR...etc
I never knew what the song was a bout as young Mexican kid just singing the chorus... Now I makes me shiver, I ain't Jewish but hot dang if this is not powerful
Lyrics: When I watch you, want to do you, right where you're standing yeah Right on the foyer on this dark day right in plain view oh yeah Of the whole ghetto, the boot-stomped meadows, but we ignore that yea You're lovely baby, this war is crazy, I won't let you down oh no no no I won't let them take you, won't let them take you hell no no I won't let them take you, won't let them take you hell no no No no no no no And when our city vast and shitty Falls to the Axis, yeah They'll search the buildings collect gold fillings, wallets, and rings But Miss Black Eyeliner you'd look finer with each day in hiding oh yea Beneath the warm wood, ooh love me so good, They won't hear us screw away the day, I'll make you say (Alive, alive, alive with love) No I won't let them take you, won't let them take you hell no no Oh no I won't let them take you, won't let them take you Our Treblinka is alive with the glory of love Treblinka, alive with the glory of love yea Should they catch us and dispatch us those separate work camps yeah I'll think about you, I'll dream about you I will not doubt you with the passing of time Should they kill me your love will fill me as warm as the bullets I'll know my purpose this all was worth this I won't let you down No I won't, no I won't, no I won't (Alive, alive, alive with love) I won't let them take you, won't let them take you hell no no
Ohhhh my sentimental heart! I can remember when I first heard this song and how moved I was by the guitar riffs. Damn near 20 years later I couldn’t help but to shed tears because I can barely recall another song that encapsulates dramatic young love. All the nostalgia, all the feels, and it’s applicability all these years later.
I heard it on some obscure MySpace page and it was like oh. My. God. Hanging out at the mall, sneaking out, only having 100 texts a month if ANY, going on AIM and MySpace. It was amazing when this first came out, young love was totally captured
Everything about this song is just so fucking heartwarming and special and all around an amazing story about love in times of adversity. “No! I won’t let them take you! Hell no no, I won’t let them take you!” When you know what is being said and the time period, it’s such a somber line.
2:43 has absolutely been living rent free in my head for so many years, since when this song was released. i fucking love Max's intensity, and if dropping to your knees and headbanging when the bridge comes in and the tempo nosedives isn't 'intensity', i have no earthly clue what else possibly could be 😂
Have to be one of the biggest “what-ifs” in the history of the genre. If I recall correctly, the original band broke up after Is a Real Boy and everything Max has released since has ranged from good to unlistenable. This album, however, is one of the landmarks of rock music in the 2000s. So much ambition and uncomfortable honesty paired with catchy and anthemic songwriter. Man….
man i'm still pretty new to the band and was bumping is a real boy for a good year before deciding to venture out to their other records, pretty disappointing..
@@undeadalph Yeah, and the new stuff isn’t exactly great either. I’d say that the best bet is to go backwards into their deeper cuts that lead to Is A Real Boy.
I think this video was actually Banned... because it was about the Holocaust... But I never understood why... the words themselves are commemorative... the video is a super smart choice! "Always be my baby" (Mariah Carey) vibes ... this song brings two movies to mind that wreck me! "Schindler's list" and "V for Vendetta" and that's all I have to say about that... I hope it stays up! My ABSOLUTE favorite Alternative/ Punk /Rock song of all time!!
Oh wow, really? There's definitely other music videos out there that should be banned. This and Wow, I can get sexual too are not on say anything youtube or website for some reason. For sure definitely has those vibes. Let's hope it stays up!
When I watch you, I wanna do you right where you're standing (yeah) Right on the foyer, on this dark day, right in plain view (oh yeah) Of the whole ghetto. The boots stomp meadows, but we ignore that (yeah) You're lovely, baby. This war is crazy. I won't let you down (Oh no no) No, I won't let them take you, won't let them take you Hell no no, oh no, I won't let them take you, won't let them take you Hell no no. No, oh no no no! And when our city, vast and shitty, falls to the axis (yeah) They'll search the buildings, collect gold fillings, wallets and rings (oh yeah) But Ms. Black Eyeliner, you'd look finer with each day in hiding (oh yeah) Beneath the wormwood, oooh, love me so good. They won't hear us screw away the day. I'll make you say: (Alive! Alive! Alive with love, alive with love tonight) No, I won't let them take you, won't let them take you Hell no no, oh no, I won't let them take you, won't let them take you Hell no no. Our Treblinka is alive with the glory of love! Treblinka, alive, with the glory of love, yeah! Should they catch us and dispatch us to those separate work camps, I'll dream about you. I will not doubt you with the passing of time (oh yeah) Should they kill me, your love will fill me, as warm as the bullets (yeah) I'll know my purpose. This war was worth this. I won't let you down. No, I won't No, I won't No, I won't (Alive! Alive!) (Alive with love, alive with love tonight) Hell no no, oh no (Alive! Alive!) I won't let them take you, won't let them take you (Alive with love, alive with love tonight) Hell no, no No, no
Those kids and their love are everything~ Love, the true alchemist to rise above in any situation 💞 Don't give up, and get that return to innocence~~~~~>💓 °•○☆💕
Me and my buddy met Max at Walmart on colfax ave around 2007 and he was the most down to earth dude in the world ever. It was a true pleasure to meet him as there was a huge trailer off of shiitty ass colfax ave and he took time out of his day to say hello to me and my brother. Took pictures with us and casually shopped like a normal person not knowing how much it meant to us. One of the most amazing people I’ve ever met. I’ll never forget our interaction. I should have payed him for how beautifully he treated me and my friend. ❤ ❤❤❤
Oh man this one just popped in my head and got goosebumps from the memories it brought. Saw these guys love multiple times and Max sounded just like the albums. So fun.
first time i actually took a look at the lyrics. it aways seemed a little odd, the song sounds so happy. That's a darn emotional song and now i have to be sad every time when i listen to it. It's beautiful the video is odd tho, he IS talking about screwing a girl ain't he?
Indeed, its very beautiful. I think he's just singing about how love can live through very dark times and how he will never stop the passion of love no matter how crap things gets. His grandparents were holocaust survivors so thats what inspired him to write it in perspective of someone trying to love someone through the holocaust
Very accurate! Morrissey probably would have rolled his eyes if he ever heard the beat n progressive to this song HAHA. but it’s a good little inspiration nod. say anything is genius and so are The Smiths
I never realized this was about a couple in the holocaust. That kind of turns a decent pop punk song into a masterpiece. Making light of anything holocaust-related is like walking a tight rope over Niagara falls, but this is a rare case of it being done well, because it's thought-provoking. Maybe a lot of the survivors managed to survive with the hope of seeing their loved ones again, even if that was the opposite of the germans' intent.
...Is a Real Boy is a very important record if you want to get back in pop punk or get into it for the first time. The songwriting and lyrics are still great all these years later, the songs are timeless, and the production is still top notch. I'm so glad I got this album on vinyl (signed by Max).
I remember thinking this was about a secret love between between one of the soldiers/guards and a Jewish prisoner, and them escaping to live together in freedom. Or... Ya know... The other thing.
Is it just me or does anyone else want a, 'Where are they now?' video of the two kids? lol This band was so awkward and nerdy but damnit if I didn't have the two disc deluxe cd of ..Is a Real Boy. Nostalgic

Love this song and video! My favorite! 💕 I also remember this in Bridge To Terabithia. I always wanted to know who played the boy in this? I know Chloe Greenfield played the girl.
I used to be high on bud on the school bus heading into 8th grade to learn about the holo during hearing this on the way over and over. These guys were fire back then, punk rock was the sheet . God I miss this type of music like you *cant* imagine
@@themightybalian It looks like a summer camp to me lol. I imagined 2 young adults in love and the things in the lyrics being played out. Like them both being sent to different work camps. And I imagine him about to be killed but still professing his love to her.
I looked for this video like a year ago and couldn't find it anywhere on the internet i thought i was either going crazy or it was some kind of conspiracy lol
I just remembered this song I had no idea what it is was about before but now I’m 31 and I just think of my grandmother who fled to canada from France during WW2
