About Gold Shaw Farm: Gold Shaw Farm is more of a farm-in-progress than an honest-to-goodness farm. We dream that someday we can transform our 150+ acre parcel of land into a regenerative and productive homestead and farm.

As a daughter and granddaughter of immigrant farmers, I understand the need to sustain healthy stock and feed the family. I was impressed how you handled Kurt so easily getting him in to the cattle car. I did get a lump in my throat when listening to the cattle calling each other. Such as life on the farm. Excellent video presentation.

As a snot nosed city kid of 9, I watched my Aunt Elsie dispatch eight chickens for a family picnic. I have a mountain of respect for farmers. They will sit up all night with a sick calf knowing that in a couple of years that same calf will be going in the freezer.

@@unholyheretik you’re missing the whole point, the mechanic put many hours of work into fixing the car, just as one might put many hours of work into raising an animal. It’s just an analogy about one’s appreciation of seeing a task through to the end. You can buy a car in any condition, just as you can buy an animal in any state of being,. It’s nothing to do with life and death in this analogy, you don’t have to try and make it deep lol.

@@xGLITCHGAMINGx "You don't have to try and make it deep" you say after making it needlessly deep. That was literally just me saying you'd be more attached and it'd be harder to send a cow off to slaughter that you raised and nursed back to health if it got sick, versus an inanimate car, that cannot show you affection. and if you're more attached to cars than living things, that's unhealthy, go see a therapist. @@unholyheretik We humans do put a lot of emotion into raising animals when we do and the fact that we may also actually be the one to send them to their final rest is not always easy for some whereas others are able to divorce their emotions from the fact in hand. I am one who may actually become a vegan if I were to raise livestock for meat as I do invest a lot of emotion into the raising of baby animals. I am a omnivore as I do enjoy meat but as long as I don't see the slaughter of my steak, lamb chop or ham I am happy. I have eaten fresh killed chicken, after cooking of course, but although I did witness the slaughter I did not become smotionally attatched to the fowl! When farming animals for futher processing it is best to not name as that involves an emotional value to the meat or is that a soft human thing I wonder!

@@ItssssJack they also would not choose to live in constant fear of predation or a slow death due to illness and injury in the wild, if they were sapient enough to choose. Morgan gave Kurt a comfortable, stress-free life until it had to end. That's the trade-off for domestication - we keep animals and their offspring safe and healthy, and in return we get to choose when they die (and ideally we kill them quickly and cleanly, minimizing their suffering). You might not agree with that trade-off, but in so doing you're basically saying that Kurt and his relatives have no right to live at all.

Isn't it a bit weird to think of the taste of meat as the thing that matters the most when it comes to the quality of experiences of lifestock? To me it looked as if he would have loved to spare him his early demise and let him grase the farm and be part of nature until the natural end of his days. With the sad caveat, that this would not be a working business model and therefore does (almost) not exist anywhere.

As a side thought, there is an anime/manga I enjoyed called Silver Spoon which deals with a smart city-raised kid who decides to go to an agricultural high school to get away from his oppressive father. (For what it's worth, Japan does have specialty high schools for students who are likely moving into certain career fields, taking over family farms, etc.) In any case, there was a storyline that dealt with the dilemma of naming an animal when raising it. Our protagonist decided to take on a runt piglet and raise him to fatten him up and while he was warned to not get too attached, decided to give him a name: Pork bowl. There was never really a question about what was going to happen but the uncertainty of his own feelings. Eventually, he decides to use some money he's saved up... not to save the pig from slaughter, but to buy the meat (since it belonged to the school) and even wound up making bacon from it and it was a relatable lesson in a way.

You have definitely given your animals a very good and peaceful life, where they don't have to struggle for food and space for the entirety of their lives. When life must come to an end, and all life does have to come to an end, you dealt with it calmly and peacefully. You didn't hurt Kurt, or abuse him when you moved him. He had a great, food filled area to move into while he waited for transport. That was wonderful in itself. And you didn't roughly move him into the wagon either. You talked to him, and only prodded him gently when he absolutely needed to be encouraged. He wasn't afraid, or panicking. He wasn't injured, and in pain. He went along peacefully and that was wonderful. All of what you did was good for Kurt's last hours of life. I think you did the best you could for Kurt. His life was full of pleasure in the form of other cows and plenty to eat. He had a very idyllic life. God bless you Morgan. Be at peace about Kurt. He had a very good life in your wonderful care. We only had up to three cows at a time growing up. We didn't have to see the slaughter as children because my father took care of the arrangements. However, the worst experience was when my father once asked how our meal tasted. He then told us is was our bunnies! That was a sad tearful dinner.

I know a lot of people who had that happen. I don't know why people think it is okay or funny. That can be traumatizing. If you can't be honest before hand and allow the kid to choose, don't do it.

Oof, I don't like when adults do that. You tell the kids before hand. My grandma once told my little sister that she was eating duck when she said it was jummy. My tiny 2.5 year old sister kept saying "She didn't know, she didn't know" (about herself not knowing she was eating duck because she loved the ducks in the park so much).

My mom lived next door to a family that raised bunnies for bunny meat and she would go over and spend time with them, feeding them, playing with them, naming them, taking care of them in whatever ways necessary. Then in, I think she said, the fall, the bunnies would be culled and her family would get a couple as thanks for the assistance. She said the first time was real hard on her too.

I’ve always named the cattle, and the neighbor’s cattle when he leased a pasture. The last herd were named for flowers in my gardens : Rose, DaIsy, Tulip, Iris, Ivy and their babies were The Petals ( I saw them as a singing group since they were frequently vocal at the same time. ). If you have a chance, discuss some of Temple Grandin’s ideas. Your listening and watching audience would find it very interesting. We frequently have families and children out to visit, giving them an opportunity to see the real Circle of Life. It’s like planting a garden of ideas for a generation who has never been connected to their food sources. Keep telling the story. Your “Garden of Ideas” is important.

I loved how Kurt took on the role of protector, especially when the little ones came along. He wasn't a raging bull full of testosterone, but he knew those were his ladies and his herd and he did his best to be a comanding and reassuring presence. I'm sad he had to go and even sadder that he didn't get to meet the new bull and officially hand the job over to him, but I always knew this day was coming (that's why he was named Kurt Cobain, after all) and I know Audrey One will do a good job until Baby Bull is ready. You've also done an excellent job Morgan - you've shown such love and care, trying to brush and bond with Kurt even though you knew his fate! When I started watching your videos I was very inspired by what you do and wrestled with whether I could have my own homestead and raise animals for meat whilst still loving animals. I was eating meat back then and now I am almost fully vegan(I'll eat a free range duck egg occasionally) and I manage a community Forest Garden so I'm raising plants instead of livestock - but your passion and compassion still inspire me and I'm happy you are showing the world that ethical meat production is possible! Thank you Morgan, goodbye Kurt

The farm I grew up on raised livestock for meat production. By the time I was 4 or 5 my dad had to explain what was going on and it upset me at first, but there is a circle of life that we all fall into. As much as I respect and see why people would choose to remove meat from their diets, I've never gotten to that point, but I feel more comfortable consuming meat knowing that the animals were raised humanely and treated with respect. Thank you, Kurt.
