No the reason it’s harder is because no one teaches how to manage their real hair. The elders lived by Eurocentric standards and taught them to their kids and grandkids and now ppl are just learning to manage their own hair.

yeah there's a lot of misinformation out there for us to know how to do our hair.

@@mayowasworld I’m thankful for this computer age cuz we can learn so much from each other and re-educate ourselves about these things. I’m realizing it wasn’t that our hair was “hard to manage” we just didn’t know what to do. Now that we know, our hair flourishes the way it was intended to and it’s the most versatile and beautiful hair of all. Thank you for your content mamas. I don’t think ppl realize how ingrained a lot of these ideals are. ❤️🫶🏽

Yes like honestly if You follow these 6 hour wash and go routines you'll be feeling crazy out here. It should be 2 hours max unless you just have tons and tons of hair to dry. Also i dont have the kinkiest hair but it's def type 4 and I like the way My wash n go looks at the end if the week. It stands up more. It's frizzier. If You want your 4c hair hang down and be super defined, you're gonna have to do wash and go's every other day. Yeah of course that seems super hard and unrealistic lol

I keep telling him my hair is doing well and I've got a routine leave me alone. He actually thinks he's helping my in a "struggle" and keeps talking about "good hair" (often straight or loose curls). Try talking to a boomer/gen x Dominican dad about colonialism and anti-blackness lol My mom was more resistant in the beginning and has not let go of the creamy crack herself, but is supportive and one of my biggest fans in terms of hair and support. Same. I have had my microlocs for 6 years now and I wish I would have gotten them sooner. I really struggled with natural hair for 10 years before I got them. Looking back now...I wasted so much time washing, conditioning, flat ironing, stretching, braiding, parting etc. Never again.

I think another reason why people's haircare routines take so long is because people focus so much on getting their hair longer. People buy all these products, do all these processes so they can have longer hair. Because even if they're not trying to change their hair texture, we all know that society associates long hair with femininity and beauty.

I've been wearing my hair natural for most of my adulthood. I totally agree with you; the idea that it is difficult to manage is a myth. What I will say is that many of us were not aware of how to manage it and that is also a consequence of centering European beauty standards.

I agree! 2 years into free forming from loose natural hair. I do miss having a big afro lol but I wouldn't go back. So much money and time spent on curling products just to make it look acceptable to others. The pressure is much worse for fem presenting people. Free forming and dead stretching has been one of the most liberating experiences for me. Now that my hair is getting longer, people are starting to treat me better.

If it wasn’t for the panorama I’d still be getting relaxers. I got my first when I was 14 in 2004 because my mom couldn’t do my hair in its natural state and my hair didn’t like the creamy cracke. My hair would revert as soon as I’d get one put in and I should’ve taken it as a sign that my hair hated those chemicals. I’ve big chopped in 2021 and it’s been 3 years since I’ve worn my hair in its entirety. I love that I can wear my curly fro or put it in a pineapple and I’m going to an event next month so I’m looking for a cute style to wear 😊

I think the interpretation of hard is what needs to be clarified. It’s hard as opposed to other hair types. Hard in the amount of time it takes to wash and style without adding heat. Hard in the amount of money needs to be spent on even the simplest group of products to wash and moisturize. Hard as in the time spent to refresh it every morning after sleeping. I don’t think “hard” is a bad or misinformed thing to say it’s what the person interprets as hard.

To me: 4b and 4c hair should be the only hair that should be considered natural. Other types before 4b don’t have the stigma attached to it like 4b and c does.

I’ll be honest.. it’s harder to do than type 3 hair. It’s not propaganda. It’s the truth🤷🏾‍♀️. With that being said I do my hair every 3-4 days. It takes me an hour to do. So in the grand scheme of things it’s not hard to do. But type c is easier. But I love both. I have 2 siblings with type 3 hair. I love it. I’m 4c and I love it.

When it comes to the wigs, weaves and lace fronts, I suppose my question is "if ur taking too long with ur natural hair and you just want to get up and leave the house, why is it always straight/wavy Asian hair? Why not an afro wig? Kinky straight?"
@Tina_O

Yep. My thoughts exactly. Since last year I have moved away from straight wigs (well, wigs in general). I figured, if I choose to wear a wig, why not get a wig that matches my 4c texture? I legit have ONE go-to wig that I probably won’t wear for a while but it’s very close to MY 4c kinky texture.

Yes! The whole "the wig needs to look like its coming out your scalp" foolishness is crazy. It's NOT MY HAIR! You know it. I know it. So why is it a cardinal sin that you can see the lace? I gave up on the wigs. Black girls would crucify me and it was too much man. And the wigs just gave me an excuse to not take care of the hair underneath. So it's not for me. I'm a natural//braids girl all the way. And don't get me started on the edges thing. I never subscribed to it and I wish other people didn't either.

Nothing wrong with styling hair but hair does not always need to be styled. I have no problem with my edges just be what they are but like I said for a special occasion if I do a natural hair style I will lay them.

We don’t have to straighten our hair. Even just washing it most of us need to have a designated “wash day”. Obligated to put hair in sections just to wash it without it getting tangled and matted. Even just washing our hair is a tedious process, forget about styling and standards after the fact. Not everyone feels comfortable with locs. I need my hair to be able to be free when I want it to. I’ve been grappling with this! I have 4B hair and it can get frizzy but I realized my hair likes staying in twists, shrinkage and all. But everywhere I go, it does seem like black women aren’t wearing their natural hair out anymore, only lace fronts or weaves or if they have 3A-3C hair types. And I’ve felt the pressure to be “chosen,” or to fit in by wearing wigs again, but I remember what it did to my edges and how expensive it can be over time. Anywho, thank you for this video as a reminder to me that my natural hair in twists is enough.

I've been natural for over ten years now. I wore my afro for about 8 years. I did fall for the "it's too time-consuming" messaging because I was detangling and flat-twisting every other night. I thought my 4c coils needed to be stretched to be an acceptable version of an afro. "Shrinkage" and humidity (life in FL) reminded me that I was the one doing too much, not my hair. I have had locs for 2 years now and I'm seeing the same messaging about loc maintenance. The messaging is so anti-just exist as you are... Like just being my regular black self is never going to be acceptable no matter what I do. SO *deep breath*... I'm doing the work to decolonize the views I have of myself and embrace a more pro-black way of being, especially when it comes to pro-black and Afrocentric standards of beauty. When I view myself and other black people through these lenses, I can see clearly how beautiful we are.

You’re right! It ain’t hard at all. I’m 4c and it takes me 10 mins for my everyday look. The secret is moisture. I use water, conditioning spray, oil and a cream. I normally wear it in a fro and then I go. Now if I wanted to braid it up or do twist outs that’ll be different. Those girls are lying. It doesn’t take 5 hours. I wash my hair in the shower. That takes about 10 mins and finger comb it. I use a detangling brush on non wash days. That takes 5 mins. I can run it threw my hair from root to end. I did notice most women with perms are anti black. It is what it is. The more who returns the harder it is for us to wear our natural texture in the workplace. The crown act has loop holes. We shouldn’t have to make laws to wear our natural hair.

Exactly I have a method, that works on my type 4b hair. I also learned of different products to use prior to and after shampoo to quicken the process. This also largely depends on the length of your hair as well. As someone who had 4b hair to my waist, it definitely took longer than 5-10 mins to finger detangle. But it’s a mental thing too… if you see taking care of your hair as a self care thing instead of a chore, it’s a different experience.

Agree a thousand percent!! I am THE LAZIEST natural you will ever meet 😂 it truly is not difficult to take care and wear 4c hair. Slightly controversial take, the relaxers and wigs are harder! I am a wash and go girly OR ill stretch with plaits. After the one day of stretching, I don't have to touch my hair for at least for a week. I get up, spray it with water/moisturizer and go. Applying and caring for a wig seems to take a really long time. And relaxers require monthly maintenance and a whole wash and blow dry. Plus you have to wrap it every night or risk chaos in the morning. I would bet money that overall I spend less time and energy on my hair than people who wear lacefronts/relaxersa. And I constantly get compliments on my hair (as a dark skin, fat woman at that).

Definitely wearing your natural hair is so much cheaper than wearing wigs getting silk presses weekly etc… I know some people go crazy and buy way too many products, but you don’t need a ton of products. And the thing is I don’t even wash my hair that often 2 to 3 times a month so it takes me a long time to go through shampoo and conditioner. The only thing I really need is a twisting cream a leave in conditioner, some mousse, maybe a nice oil. I don’t know. I don’t find myself buying that many products, and it takes me a long time to go through them because I’m not styling my hair every day.

Taking care of hair is a skill. The idea that coils are more difficult comes from the lack of knowledge about how to care for them and the unreasonable standards people hold coils to. You don't need 10+ products for your hair and you don't need to spend 3 hours finger coiling to be "presentable". P.S. Shrinkage is beautiful, it shows that your coils are healthy.

RIGHT!! Another thing-the over-detangling which isn’t good because over detangling (which is what I think people who complain about how hard it is to de tangle their hair does) ruins the natural coils/curl-pattern. Type 4 Afro-textured hair is naturally coily already trying to over de detangle is just another part of manipulation to the hair that doesn’t need it🤷🏾‍♀️

I know that in our community, say “perm” when we talk about straightening hair, but it’s actually a relaxer. The perm is what’s used to make straight hair curly. I think the distinction is important because it’s an example of how the language is used. To say that our hair has to relax is WILD. Same for texturizes… our hair is already textured. The most textured…. But the language implies that curls are texture and kinks aren’t.

Perm is short for permanent. It is referring to a chemical treatment that has a permanent effect so you would have to grow it out or cut it off to get rid of it. So a relaxer is a perm. There are relaxer perms and curly perms. Some dyes are permanent while others are semi and easily washed out.

I loved your take on natural hair. You are spot on. I stop using combs and brushes for several months now and I feel liberated. All these years I had been forcing my hair to go against what it's naturally supposed to do. I don't feel the need to detangle every strand. I wear twist all of the time now and totally dropped the multiple hair products. I have a short pixie wig and I wore it during the cold winter for protection. Lol everyone knew it was a wig because I told it when asked. Natural hair isn't difficult to care for once you accept what is growing out of your scalp. Black women are the largest consumers of hair products and that's fact. Our white counterparts throw their hair into a messy bun and go for it. I believe we as a people have the most unique hair on the planet. Why are we trying to tame the very thing that makes us unique as a people. Love your makeup, I do the two tone lips as well. I didn’t use combs or brushes for years, just finger detangling, and I’ve been natural for over a decade. But I recently got the unbrush and the tangle Teezer, and they are game changes for me, they detangle, my hair very gently and very quickly. I don’t detangle my hair every day. I usually just do so on wash day. I normally wear my hair in two strand twists and I just put the twists in a bun and go about my business. If I want it styled I’ll just untwist my hair, and wear twist outs for a few days maybe do a slicked ponytail or pineapple on my old twist out. The way I manage my hair I’m not having to do it every single day or style it every single day and the styles I do usually don’t take me very long. So I find it to be very low maintenance actually. My wash days can be a little long but I only wash my hair every two weeks or so and I usually detangle my hair the night before I wash that way my wash day goes a little bit faster.

I’m sorry. It is harder and requires more. I kept my hair in a bee hive bun and never straightened it. My signature hairstyle. Very LONG! I dreaded WASH DAY because I struggled to DETANGLE. So one day I got so pissed off, I chopped it all off on wash day!!! I have done several chops since then and it again happens when my hair became longer and I struggle detangling This is a REAL struggle and I’m tired of naturals saying it’s made up. It’s not! It’s real! What has saved me is NOT listening to some natural hair advisors. I now put oil on my scalp and I notice it conditions my hair while growing from the scalp so it doesn’t get as easily tangled. I REMOVED THE DUMB DENMAN BRUSH. I got a UNBRUSH ( which is A LIFE CHANGER!! Thank you to the inventor) and Paul Mitchell pro tool 407 brush! The Afro pick I use has double rows of teeth instead the one row. Investing in hylauronic acid products. I use Kenya Moore hair care line! I Henna my high porosity hair to help fill in the cuticles so that moisture is easier to retain which in turn lessens breakage! I literally decided to stop limiting my hair advice to black naturals and now my hair is easier to maintain! Sad to say that other races have actually helped me understand how to take care of my hair without making it feel like a burden. It should feel like a beautiful ritual that you enjoy. The natural community is either gaslighting and shaming me about my struggles by making me believe I suffer from an internal racial conflict, obsessed with texture and getting there curls to pop, or obsessed with showing you how LONG there hair is as a black person. ITS ANNOYING and TOXIC! Hair should be seen as FUN and beautiful. Stop boxing us! Some people prefer to wear SHORT hair, but is being shamed and called bald headed if they can’t prove they can actually grow long hair! It’s ridiculous! Everyone is different and has different desires with there hair! We expect too much from each other. The RU-vidr naturals DO indeed ADD to the burden. They make natural hair HARD to even THINK ABOUT. Watching someone tell you they took 10+hrs on wash day is crazy work. The truth is black people STILL refuse to show there hair… even when long and straightened! They do not want to be bothered with upkeep and prefer or-styled wigs and weaves! The prefer hair styles the cut down on time! Always have and always will! However, it DOES require more with our hair UNLESS you have it loc’d or braided ( which is what black women do under that wig or weave). But everyone does not want those natural hair styles permanently! Our hair is more difficult than other races. It is TRUE! We require more maintenance!! Everyone doesn’t want to be an expert hair dresser in order to do wash day. However I am now an expert! I am skilled at natural hair and can style it straight, kinky, curly, extensions, wigs… I can do it alllllllllllll! And I’m not sorry for feeling how I feel and wearing my hair how I want! I don’t know why we do this to each other. Why we can see the beauty in all of us. No one should feel ashamed to wear there hair however they choose. Stop policing hair period.

We even got parents putting extensions and weaves in babies head. What is going on???. As a natural I'm not hating perms, weaves or whatever, I've done it all, but I'm also honest about the reason I was doing it. As just as stated it wasn't because my hair was too hard to take care of, I didn't like my nappy hair and I was trying to assimilate to something that I was not... A straight hair girl. Eurocentric ways. I wasn't protecting my hair from anything except for being seen! That was a hard pill to swallow. I actually started crying. It really humbled me. I had to sit in that space and free my self from societal bondage. I am now at my most happiness, living in my truth, being happy nappy 24/7 and proud!

I’m sorry, but no natural hair IS harder to care of than straight hair. coils and curls are just more prone to tangles and getting matted thats just what it is . If that’s not the case why does it take black hair 3-6 hours to get done and sometimes more and someone with straight hair could roll out of bed and walk out the door?

@hope3290
@hope3290 5 месяцев назад
Someone with straight hair cannot just walk out the door, they also have hair upkeep. I've seen SO many white girls having to flat iron their hair and brush for hours and cake it up with dry shampoo to get their hair to look pin straight. The only difference is that people with straight hair are allowed to go out with unfixed hair without being called "unkempt" and "dirty." Edit: also, my natural hair does not take 3-6 hours. It takes an hour at the most. The problem is that people don't allow the hair to look the way it is; they have to manipulate it to look a specific way that isn't natural to their hair texture. People do wash-and-go's that take forever because they want their 4c hair to look 3c.

And that’s okay in your case your hair could be less prone to matting and tangles. the time it take to do natural hair also comes to play with many other factors like your length and porosity but I have seen many girls that struggle with their natural hair not because they don’t want to wear their natural hair but because it’s just a lot of work period. And every head of hair needs upkeep but I believe people with straight hairs upkeep is nothing compared to upkeep of natural hair.

Idk why black people act like relaxing and popping on a wig means you hate your hair lol Personally, my formula is silk press, braids, Afro throughout the year. My natural hair takes 30/45min to detangle alone…this natural hair is no joke…. Straight hair is easier to manage. Black people talk like this as if we are the only people with thick and curly hair.

Yep never understood this concept that natural hair is “difficult” people spend hours in the salon, wrap their hair every night, and avoid water like the plague then act like it’s “low maintenance”. You’re 100% right to call it out for what it is. Don’t say that straightened kinky hair is “low maintenance” when it’s not! If you want to do all that fine go ahead but it’s not low maintenance. I wear my hair in 2 strand twists most of the time and that’s pretty low maintenance for me. I can even wash my hair in twists. Yes it takes time to put them in but then I leave my hair like that for weeks and I don’t have to do anything at night nor do I have to avoid wetting my hair. I used to do wash and goes all the time and I mean a true wash and go where I would wash my hair and go, not sit there shingling and trying to make curls and definition. But that was when my hair was shorter but damn this video is making me wanna do a wash and go on my longer 4c hair.
@tssx11

Low maintenance can be subjective. I wear my hair straight only because for me it is super low maintenance compared to when it’s in natural state, and because it helps me retain length. I can wake up and not have to worry about my hair for weeks before washing and straightening again.

@@tssx11I'm assuming you're heat trained/damaged? Cause no way your silk press can last "weeks" unless living in a dry climate . If either or both is the is the cases, then I guess it can be easier. I think straight hair is easier overall, at least when its not thick, but definitely don't think it's prettier on black people... Just my opinion though. Mainly cause I do take issue with the idea that the hair that naturally grows on one's scalp isn't the most suitable for that person. I have met Asians that that get perms because they feel that way about their straight hair though so it's unfair to only call out black woman for it...

The cognitive dissonance here is deafening.. Personally, my type 4 hair IS high maintenance, textured hair is high maintenance and by that logic “harder”. Lets not use rewording to try and erase facts. My type 4 hair requires detangling, lots of water and even product, butter/oil, to make it even possible to comb through. Yes, everyone has a different standard of what is “done” hair. My standard is when its combed, hydrated, fully dry, and styled. I cannot wet my low porosity hair every day or else i get sick because it takes alot of water for it to absorb hydration. I cannot do “wash&go’s” because they dont last, my hair gets matted, and eventually gives me a headache because of how thick and dense it is. Can barely keep a press for long because it doesnt last. Cant even fit a scarf over it when its fully out. My hair being “done” is apart of my physical health because i suffer from migraines, will get sick from excess water, and my hair is so dense that my scalp cannot breathe when my hair is fully out/natural/unstyled. So natural police can go on somewhere with “saying natural hair is harder to do is sourced from eurocentric standards of beauty” if i had type 1 i wouldn’t have these issues, period. I literally either have the option of going through the work of doing maintenance on my hair, or shaving it.

I think it's okay to acknowledge that running a wide tooth comb through 4c hair on an early Monday morning when you've got to get your kids ready and get the dog to the vet and be out the door ASAP, is not as easy as running that same wide tooth comb through a looser hair texture. I think glossing over that is gaslighting that the "natural hair Community" is well known for. Listen, as a 4c haver, who has gone through the different stages of grief with my hair and am really in love with my hair now, it's not all propaganda. I'm not a lace wig wearer, so don't come at me. Texturism and all the other isms are real. I get that. Laces wigs are not the one size fit all solution. I get that. But this message that thick 4c hair is nothing compared to looser textures, asides from it being gaslighting, it can really, really be heart breaking for the girlie's out there who really want a different look from the wigs, but still struggle with their hair. Yes it is a struggle till you figure out your own routine and even then, it can still be work. No, not every 4c girl wants to loc her hair or keep a standing or short fro because it's just not the look she's going for. And that's fine. No it's not all eurocentric reasons, some of us just like to be versatile with the hair on our own heads. Key word "own". And I'm not saying relaxers are the way either. And I say that as an African woman who lived most of her life both on the continent and in the Caribbean where the locs and braids and fros and threads on 4c are properly represented. Acknowledge that it can be a difficult journey to get to the point where you have your routine on lock down that it becomes a breeze and that it's not all about the white man and masa, because trust and believe, it wasn't that for me and tons of other girls I know. When it's all politicised and propaganda-d you stand the risk of othering a huge section of the community who cannot identify with the "my 4c is a breeze". I'm almost 30 and I still need to section out a whole weekend a month to care for my hair because I can't just wake up in the morning and pour water through it and expect it to be well and fine the rest of the week. The breakage, the dryness, the etc. We can experience these things and still love our hair. It's alright to acknowledge that. I wear my hair mainly in cornrows and mini twists that I do myself. That's as natural as it gets as I don't want locs as they get heavy with length. Sis, it takes time to get into that routine, and even with that time, some days can be testy. And it's normal. And about this line, "It's not your hair that's difficult, it's styling your hair to look like something it's not is difficult", without going to the extremes of excessive manipulation, this is just not all the way accurate. I can see how it would be the case for you personally because with your style there's literally no manipulation, but going by that who's the authority on natural hair to say that the way my natural hair is supposed to look is free form locs? And there's nothing wrong with your hair, it's beautiful, it really is. But in my little mini twist corner where I have to make sure that it's wet enough, but not too wet and it needs to be sectioned in so and so and it definitely does not take 30 mins as some of the commenters here are laughably stating, is that also a natural hair taboo as I'm finding it a little tedious because I'm choosing to comb? To any natural 4c havers who find it a bit tedious every now and again, it's normal. It's not all propaganda, it's not all the man, it's not weird that your hair takes a bit longer to tame. You'll get into a routine and you'll come to love that routine as part of your self care process. The laces can destroy your edges, the wigs can give you headaches and simply might not look like you. Be patient with yourself and your hair. On the off day when it's a bit more tedious than usual or you're short on time, slap that headband/closure/glueless wig on and go about your day. But learn to love your 4c because at the end of the day its all you really have. Take pride in it and try to love your journey. There are so many girls our there going through what you're going through. You'll live.

I asked in a black women group on Facebook why do black women want long natural healthy hair but don’t want to put in the work. I discussed how my man’s sister said she wanted long hair like me but when I told her my hair routine, she said it’s “ too much “. I got dragged in the comments and some people even claimed I was dragging all black women and I had no empathy for black women for simply asking why do black women say it’s too much work when it’s not ? They kept coming up excuses on why they don’t take care of their hair. Black women can spend HOURS in the hair salon getting a weave done or getting braids but natural hair is “ too much “. Also I’m a black woman with type 4a natural hair and it takes me almost 30 minutes to detangle my hair once a week and I have mid back length hair. I detangle on wash day so in total I spend about an hour on my hair once a week. I keep my hair in 4 braids, bobby pin it, and leave it alone for 5 days. I wear it down two days out of the week. No it does not take hours to detangle and I don’t detangle it everyday.

AHHH it makes me so mad when people talk about how “hard” it is. It’s just annoying cause the general maintenance and conditioning required for natural hair is what people should be doing anyways despite its length / weather it’s a wig a protective style, and/or texture? As we all know, the biggest issue is accepting oneself so we don’t feel the need to over maintenance our hair in the first place… that’s that’s where the alleged “extra time” comes in. Like, if you’re doing a fresh set of twist every night 💀 you’re the one making it hard, not the hair.

The language people use around hair is actually so very wrong. From a scientific standpoint hair does not need to be moisturized. Hair is naturally hydrophobic, it repels water. This is because too much water inside the hair is damaging. I even hear people complain about their hair being low porosity and not absorbing water. That’s literally a sign of healthy hair but when hair is damaged it absorbs water quickly because there’s a lot of holes on the cuticle layer. Hair does not need to be moisturized and it doesn’t need water daily. It’s not alive either it’s dead. Hair is dead y’all! If hair needs anything, it’s oil because oil coats your hair and protects it from water ironically, the scalp produces oil to coat the hair called sebum and there’s lipids inside of your hair too. The reason your hair needs to be coated and protected is because it is dead. Once it is damaged, it cannot restore and heal itself. We all need to be educated on this. Because we are very confused.

Wetting hair can be good for kinky coily types because it makes the hair flexible which is good if you are manipulating your hair (detangling or styling). Have you ever seen a barbie doll? Or searched up depression hair on google? Any hair that is neglected will turn into a thick clump of tangled mess even straight hair. How long it takes is just a matter of prevention. Our hair is more versatile so ofc certain intricate styles naturally require skill, but this is only a problem if you want to manipulate your own hair to imitate those pictures. For ex; I'm super tender headed, the feeling of a comb running on my scalp brought tears to my eyes. Growing up my older sisters could never understand they would be like 'i'm not even combing I'm just parting!" As a teenager when they'd moved out and left me to tackle my hair alone i struggled with parting especially. on top of trying to get them straight each attempt hurt so I'd spend hours and hours. Don't even get me started on the back of my head. One really stressful day it hit me out of the blue, wait why do I need parts? Why do they need to be even? Who told me these things and why do I have to listen? Stopped obsessing over parts and never looked back. Yes some things take skill but ask yourself if its a skill you want to have or other people expect you to have. Cause if you can't do it you don't have to learn. Just let it go.

I have straight hair, and it can be high maintenance. I live in the south where it’s hot and my scalp sweats a lot, sometimes I need to shampoo twice in a day to keep my hair from matting. My hair has an undercut and and the top goes to my shoulders, so I’m pretty lucky. I have sisters that do have to spend hours detangling their hair, and they do use a lot of different products to keep their length, especially if it’s thick.

IMO most of the hate comes from our own selves… we have internalised it to the point where we are keeping the self hate alive and still at this rate. It is up to us to make the conscious decision to unlearn the trauma , heal and love ourselves and own our hair ! we cannot look towards other races to uplift us and reverse the damage. getting locs really helped to do this for me 💖 when you look at our hair and observe it’s essence it is what our hair wants to do and that can explain why detangling is exhausting.

I mostly wear my natural hair in a twist out and annually rock a lace front, and I do agree that maintaining a lace front is not easy, but maintaining natural hair is not a walk in a park either, especially if you style it. And I do agree that wearing my hair in a stretched state is more socially acceptable than a fro, but just because you have natural hair it doesn't mean you should not style it, the same way people with other hair textures style theirs, the way you present yourself matters so there should be some effort put in wearing your hair. And it's not recommended to wet your hair every day either as it dries the hair out, and constantly wetting the hair weakens the bonds in the hair. As a community we should encourage each other to wear our hair in all forms let's teach one another to love and embrace our hair in all stages.

Im sorry I can’t take seriously anyone with unkept locs telling anyone about natural hairstyling. As straighter hair types can be unkept so can coily hairtypes however there are levels to difficulty depending on hairtypes. The more coily the more difficult.

Hearing the word "tame" in a recent video to describe styling afro textured hair literally infuriated me!!!!! It's HAIR!!!!! Smh! I wore a lacefront once for a photo shoot and couldn't keep it on more than 3 days! I also got fulani braids once that literally took 12 HOURS!!! (Longest time its ever took to do a style for me). Any time I go to a hair salon, it's EASILY 3-6 hours. I am all for wigs (I prefer glueless or clip), protective styles and etc, but there is absolutely nothing more freeing and relaxing than just wearing my hair out in its natural state. Least amount of time and effort to just leave it as is. - signed a 4b/c girly who wears my hair in all different ways and styles

I feel you for fr fr! I’m growing out my natural hair again after having a short relaxed 90s mushroom style cut back in late 2022. Before that, I hadn’t relaxed my hair from 2009-2022. And the last time I officially relaxed my hair was nearly a year ago. I’ve worn my hair relaxed, silk pressed, in afro type styles, braids and weaves and wigs in the past. And I will wear my hair how I like… but the easier, most cost effective and convenient way for me to wear my hair? Natural! Each to their own, including how one chooses to style their hair… but in my own experience, once I got into my hair care grooves, natural hair is the easiest and healthiest way for me.
