Word counts are divisive within the writing & authortube community, so I figured I would attempt a vlog without sharing ANY. I also challenged the stream to ~share their progress~ without word counts and it was super fun. Here's some revelations I had during this experiment....
0:00 Why no word counts??
1:22 A little morning routine or tarot and emails.
6:32 Organizing beta reader feedback.
8:28 Challenging the stream to also not share word counts.
10:56 New short story, challenging myself not to use dialogue.
13:11 Wrap-up of my thoughts on the "no word count" experiment & updating you on projects.
☟↓ QUESTIONS FOR YOU BELOOOOOW! ↓☟
D I S C U S S I O N Q U E S T I O N S :
When you're NOT participating in streams or hanging with other writers, do you track your word counts??
How do you "measure" progress for a single writing session? Do you not measure at all?
Do you prefer watching vlogs where people share their word count progress during the video??

When you write zero drafts by hand, it's a lot easier to let go of word count anxiety.
@werelemur1138

I recently tried that, the second part of the experiment is going to be how the typing-in process goes.

@@werelemur1138 Awesome! Zero drafting by hand is definitely not for everybody. Especially those who track elements of their story using a computer program. Typing out a first draft from your hand-written zero draft is a great time to just have fun polishing and restructuring. Good luck and write on!

It's the huge word count emphasis that I mostly dislike. I organize a silent writing group through Google hangouts every Saturday morning and two of us handwrite so we don't share word counts. We talk about how the writing felt. "I really felt in the zone today, I didn't want to stop " Or "I struggled with a scene so I skipped it and spent the writing time typing up what I handwrite yesterday. I'm loving these characters. I'm probably nearing the middle of the novel."

Exactly this! I have no real issue with word counts, it's just how central they seem to authortube culture that I don't like. I also handwrite, and word counts don't really work for me, and it can be hard to find spaces where I can exist without that being the main emphasis.
@bodine219

@@Lisa_Flowers I'm in a writing group on discord. Some of us love wordcounts, some of us don't. So we do "edit" sprints for those who want to participate but don't want to do wordcounts. And we all seem to love the phrase "all words are beautiful.

As a viewer, I'll be honest, not hearing you speak about word count was a bit strange, but I think only because I'm so used to hearing it. I do feel you were more willing to share about where you were with the story without having to explain how many words you got. :) As a writer, I stopped focusing on word counts a long time ago because with my work schedule I would feel really bad about not being able to write 1000 or 100 words a day. It was very freeing to me to focus on writing scenes only because I could focus on the scene itself and when I finished it I felt more accomplished than only thinking about how many words I got. Very interesting video since the war on word count has become even more popular as of late. :)

When I'm writing by myself, I don't really care about my word count. It's just kind of a thing that's There that I can reference if someone asks how I'm doing, but I don't really pay attention to it other than that. The best way I've found to keep myself motivated is by talking with my friends of discord! It's nice to have a chill place to talk about writing and stuff. Sometimes we sprint together, which can get a little competitive at times, but it's all in good fun!!!

I love the idea of not using word counts as the be-all-end-all of progress. I have 0 problems with anyone saying how they did via word count if that's what they feel comfortable with, but having someone focusing on maybe what stage of the writing journey they are on instead is really helpful. For example, my word counts are not going to be good while editing, and if that is the only focus, it's like I got nothing done while during the stream I may have edited three chapters, 0 words added but all kinds of productive. I don't, however, believe that your streams or Zara's, for instance, are only word-count oriented. You both ask how your viewers did, not how many words you got down, and you both have mentioned several times that the sprints are to be productive and cheer people on who are doing other things besides plugging away at the keyboard. It's why I follow you. (There are others as well, but you two are the ones that stick out in my mind) So thank you, because while it's good to bring some light to the fact that word goals arent everything (honestly, it's a very small portion of writing tbh), you've already been advocating for productivity in general. If eliminating word-count only goals is the new way things are going, you're already way ahead of the game.

I honestly get more work done on days where I don't set timers, don't join live streams, and don't have any other obligations for the day. I just sit down and write, getting up and taking breaks as I need to. On days when I do this, I don't tend to pay attention to the word count as much, and I always seem to hit anywhere from 5-15K. Something about doing that gets me in the zone and I just... write... On days like that I also don't do much vlogging or chatting with others either though... Full hermit mode for the win?

Very good video, thanks! Keeping meticulous track of word counts is a double-edged sword for me. On the one hand it feels great to measure progress and see I'm hitting goals, but on the other hand it can be incredibly frustrating and stifling to think of it in numbers instead of story progression and beats.

I really liked you explaining your progress without referencing word counts, it was more fun to visualise your work rather than be explicitly told the statistics. Sometimes words counts are redundant, as even if a paragraph is important and took a lot of time to curate you only walk away with 300 words for example, compared to a time where you write 1500 words which were less taxing - it almost places more value on the higher word count over the words that were more integral to payoff!

Also, I've been dying to try out one of the Vampire Blood candles from BBW...are they everything I dream of? Lol, also Zelda barking at the socks is just too cute! I think the whole idea of sharing progress instead of word counts is an interesting idea, and also that way, you can kind of get more of an idea of what others are working on, but that's just my two cents. (Nevermind...you just said that, lol) Love the video!

I really enjoyed this vlog. Watching this I understand, care, and connect more with your updates. Word counts just aren't how my brain works, so this felt easier to wrap my head around. Also I don't care how much someone writes. What they write or the story and structure and craft process/challenges/successes are what matter to me. Word counts are just one type of measurement and having more than that is more entertaining, personally. Thanks for the video Kate!

I have been wanting to keep track of my word count but I never jot it down. I check it before every writing session and I feel good about seeing the number go up even if its just 50 words. I have a hard time with numbers in general and 1k words can be the same as 10k words to me because I can’t wrap my head around the quantitative without having a physical copy of the words in my hands. But seeing the difference in day to day word count provides a little dose of serotonin that keeps me going; some days it matters more than others. But I’d love to put it into an excel sheet or something so I could make a graph of it for personal reasons. I guess kind of in a way to remind myself that writing isn’t a linear process. If not word count, I like to measure with scenes. I do have an outline with all the scenes that I need in my WIPs so when I finish a scene, I can cross it off a “list”. Personally it doesn’t really matter to me if someone shares their progress or not in the sense that it doesn’t affect my own progress. I feel that some writers may watch writers on RU-vid and compare and stress themselves out upon hearing about what others are doing. I like hearing about all kinds of ways writers measure their progress because that alone motivates me. If the writer is having fun and happy with their work and progress, than I in turn will be happy too and motivated to keep going!

OMG your furbabies are adorable. The little black kitten is precious! And Zelda chasing your feet is funny, haha! As for wordcounts, they were helpful when I first began to get back to write and I didn't really know my speed or anything, but now... yeah, now wordcounts and I don't agree, hahaha! I have been burnt out the last few months, so no writing for me, but I'm hoping to slowly get back to it in September, but no wordcount. I don't need them. I just need to know if it felt like I was progressing well or if I finished a chapter or stuff.

I do tend to track word counts pretty regularly, so I might just try a no track day. But since i do track word count, that is usually how I measure success for that day unless I pass a spot that I'd been struggling with, then that becomes my achievement for the day. Listening to you describe where you are in the story without explicitly saying the amount of words you wrote was interesting and like I said, I might just try it for myself.

I always count word counts because it makes me feel very successful. Even low word count days make me happy. I focus so much on the words because thinking in terms of pages makes me dizzy, and thinking in terms of chapters makes me feel less accomplished. I'm writing a series of novellas so on average there are 10 chapters. Saying I wrote a chapter doesn't feel as accomplishing as I wrote 1500 words. Mind over matter I guess. Btw this vlog was so nice, not focusing on word count must have let you really concentrate and enjoy your day. I think you should vlog like this more if it makes you happy 😊🥰

Oh my god the advent (all hallows-vent?) calendar! Amazing! I've also had word count goals on my mind recently as I find the disappointment I feel when I don't hit my daily goal is starting to make me avoid writing all together 😬.The only novel I ever completed I wrote without remotely thinking about a daily wc. But I did have a very hard deadline since it was going to be a Christmas gift. The story I'm currently working on has a deadline of October 1st and I've decided to nix my daily wc goal and just focus on enjoying and finishing the story. If I get it done in time then I will officially consider long term deadlines a more effective tactic for me.

Regarding your DnD novelization: I am doing something similar recently, however, it's still more of a summary. I am the DM and I have a DMPC in this group, a character that I keep mostly quiet since I don't want to impede on my player's role play (I have this because another player who knows the world as well as I do might sometimes take over as the DM and it'll be easier that way). So I started recapping the sessions from my DMPCs PoV, letting the players know her take on everything that happened while still giving a short account of the events for people who wanna read up on our campaign. I just finished up session 12 and I am having so much fun!^^ tomorrow's session 13 and we'll see what my little dumbasses are gonna do this time xD

I don't personally use word counts much - I do look at them out of interest, but I find my main satisfaction after writing comes from how it felt. Sometimes writing feels really slow or difficult even if you end up with a sizeable word count, and sometimes it may only be a couple of hundred words but it feels great or it feels like you've created something really impactful. I don't think there's anything wrong with aiming for a certain word count or celebrating reaching a certain point, but I think it's important to also add how it felt when writing - just to show that some days you may get a large word count but it was so difficult, and some days it may be lower but you're really happy with the characterisation or the flow of the work or some other aspect. :)

I LOVE your emphasis on how a writing session felt, YES. And the number of times when it felt off/wrong/hard are way more highly correlated to me having to rewrite it too, even if I in theory got a lot of words.

When I'm outlining I don't have a word count goal and I feel like I'm more productive and less stressed about how "Productive" I've been. However when I go by word count goals I then become more stressed because a lot of people are "Better" writers then me because they can write 1K or more words and I'm just not that fast. I'm actually thinking of not doing NaNo this year to see how I feel about my story, I always get so stressed because I very quickly fall behind on word count goals during November, and then I can never catch up again.

I have "read" The Elements of Style so many times. Both an audio book version taken out of the library in physical book. I always fall asleep during it. I also really love the idea of writing a book without something that seams like is a given in a story. For you writing a short story without dialog. For me it would be writing a short story only in dialog. (Because I always feel like my dialog is very flat). As far as word count go I would say that a lot of writers put to much emphasis on the word count. I like taking by hours worked on a project because sometimes that means sending emails to beta readers or editors and sometimes it means setting up my adds online. But othertimes it means adding in a sentence here and there to deepen the world I have created already. Like how am I suppose to count the words if I am cutting out a scene and then replacing half of it in a different place with new dialog or added senses. Did I write 1500 words or did I write 200 words? Who knows I don't.

I think it's absolutely fine to have periods where you focus on word count to pull you through, and to have the 50k premise of NaNoWriMo in November is fun. As soon as you get into editing, though, the focus naturally changes more to pages/ chapters/ plot points, and still tracking words makes less sense. A healthy mix of mentioning milestones or words achieved during vlogs would be nice. 🙃

I hate the pressure to get a book to a certain word count especially first drafts. I am trying to just write and check my word count at the end, but with no certain goal in mind. Just to know for myself. Because writing one word is better than writing no words, because you don't think you will meet your goal anyway. To be honest I did not notice that you were not using word counts markers until you brought it to my attention. I wonder if you vlogged this experiment again in a month or so when you have had a few more under your belt if it would feel even more natural for you. I know that when I am writing in sprints while I may have stated how many words I had gotten as I was writing I was thinking of more getting the scene done or a specific time period. But I definitely get what you said (in another video) that talking about word counts has helped you keep your story more anonymous for us. So maybe for the vlogs and livestreams you could state more about how many paragraphs or even better how many pages. Saying I wrote half a page and I know how I want to lead into the next scene now. And no one really knows (or cares) how much half a page is. It can be far more variable than 600 words. So maybe for vlogging that would give you something to start with but not be as stressful as word counts?
@mickeyperkins

I write my first drafts by hand, so I dont have any reference for word count, then when I type the second draft, I usually go by pages left to transcribe. Word count just isnt something I ever really think about, so when people say they got 600 words or 1000 words or have a 10k day, I just have no idea what that means. I can usually guess from their tone if they think it's good or not, but the numbers mean nothing to me.

AAAAAH. Okay, so I've only been watching on US hulu but keeping up with social media spoilers because I can't help myself. The couple who won were my last choice. 🙃 but it's okay, I really loved the villa this year!!!

i could see a "no to word count" approach being far more conducive to talking about ACTUAL STORY STUFF which....... yes, please. i want to know about your PROGRESS ON GETTING THE STORY.

In all honesty Kate I don't feel like you are one to use wordcount as measurement in your videos.

It was RU-vid that made me care about word counts. I used to think in term of how far I wrote in terms of story, chapters or pages. Word count makes it more frustrating to delete chunks of words. Instead of thinking about how much I improved the story I'm thinking I erased 800 words and wrote 750 so now I'm behind.
