It's another writing experiment vlog! This time, I attempted to hit my old "stretch goal" of 5,000 words per day....for 5 days in a row! Let's chat about what I learned along the way about outlining & goal-setting.

Bahaha!!! To be fair, I don't consider every day of the workweek a "writing day." I usually do a little creative writing on those days but I'll also be doing lots of other things too! So my graph is also all over the place bahaha.

NaNo 2019 I wrote 5k a day for 9 days right at the end of November. It basically destroyed me. Yes, I did vlog it. The video is a weird time capsule. 5 days would be much more manageable 😅

I think it was NaNo 2015, I did 121k in 9 days, which I think included 3 20k+ days. I’m pretty sure I didn’t write again for MONTHS. In 2016, I wrote 275k for the month, which averaged out to like 9k/day for 30 days. It was a push to see if I could do it, but strongly do not recommend

I feel like if I could stick to the writing routine I set for myself (read: not sleep in every day like I've been doing even while trying to create a habit of waking up at 8:30 AM), I probably COULD do 5K a day. My average word count every day is around 2500, since I try to go for 1,000 original story words and 1,000 fanfiction words, and then an average of 500 words or so in any random project I so choose. Also, me looking at Vin is the epitome of the "IT'S SO FLUFFY I'M GONNA DIE" meme. And cat contributions are the best... just watch out, if they start making helpful contributions then you know you're in trouble hahaha!

Oh my gosh, 5K is really a good day. I did 3200 on one of the days, but mostly I made it to 2100 or so. You are amazing!

I think that this may be the writing experiment that I was looking for all along lol. Honestly the idea of trying to write 10,000 words in a day always seemed impossible for me because I tap out creatively by a certain point in the day but I think 5,000 could be doable... maybe😳 I may give it a try and see if I can really push myself and my boundaries just a little. Thanks for the inspiration! Also, as always love seeing those adorable pupperoni's and the oh so sweet Vin! They make for a happy heart! Take care of yourself Kate! ❤❤

I never count in words, but in pages instead. It just makes more sense for me. :) So, my normal work load is 6 pages pr. dag, and as far as I remember, my strech was about 8 pages. My brain just can't do more than that in one day.

If this is a Word document, font size 12, unit spacing, then 6 pages are about 2.8-3K words. This is a great achievement!

At 2:00 you actually got me to pull out my laptop to finish some POV changes of a short story I’ve been working on that I’ve been putting off for a couple of days now. Hey Kate! I'm working on a writing journal/planner and while I was going to make it just for myself, I thought I may as well put it out there! But in order to make the best planner I can, I wanted to ask you if you could put out one of your famous polls! (I don't make youtube videos and don't have the kind of audience you have!) (I'm sure you've asked some of these questions before but I can't find the videos! Any data would be appreciated!) My main questions are: 1. How many projects do you have going right now/usually? 2. On your writing days, how many scenes do you typically write? 3. Do you write from beginning to end, or individual scenes as they come to you? (I'm sure I have more but these three are the most important.)

When I was pantsing I often wrote 10k words per day. Ever since I started plotting, I rarely manage more than 3k. I guess it was the fear of otherwise forgetting the story that kept me going back then. I kinda miss it.

@@TheBorgfelder Absolutely, that was exactly my reason for pantsing as well. But then I became a writer for hire and clients unfortunately tend to ask for a plot in advance. :-/ And now I somehow cannot go back anymore.

I think it was impressive that you were able to get out as many words as those written! And it might not have been 25K but it was still a good chunk of writing, and now you know that it's not a realistic target and can work around with what you could be aiming for.

You did really well. I think you, if you do it again, do 4k a day since you normally do 3k. I was going to try and do a short story a week for NaNo, but the last week in June I looked at the month, all my writing goals for the year, and my family coming to town I knew I needed to finish, edit, and order my short story collection this month and wouldn't be able to do it so I reset and made the goals. Maybe in September.

Question for anyone reading this: Do you write very cleanly when you do long sprints? I find when I'm going for a word count goal, my writing suffers because I'm trying to go so fast, and then I get discouraged when I re-read it. Can anyone relate or have any advise?

I personally have just accepted the fact that I can produce quality, or quantity, but only one at a time. My intention at the beginning of a long sprint is really to just stay focused and avoid distraction, and editing for prose afterwards requires being in a different mindset. Thats just me personally!

I try not to set goals for individual sprints for this reason! I definitely experience some sort of paralysis if I do. For long sprints, sometimes I jump around within the scene, sometimes I continue it seamlessly. I think it depends on the particular chapter I'm writing! I've also enjoyed editing my scenes back later that same night, so long as I promise myself to move on the next time I open the document. :)

My outlines tend to be scene based. My current project had 48 scenes at the beginning of the project, but now has around 52. It may end at 55 scenes total. I tend to add scenes if I feel they’re needed in the first draft, but I was already light on words in the first novella. My chapters will have from 2.5k to 5k words with between 1 and 3 scenes per chapter. I like my hybrid process a lot. I also use Scrivener to create character profiles and World descriptions. My outline book is one that I write in along with a World bible for anything from magic systems to martial arts styles, to technological advances and the ins and outs of how infrastructure is created. I’m having fun!

Last NaNoWriMo I tried to write 50K in 5 days. I started out strong, but after a few days I was feeling burned out and my word counts dropped so it ended up taking me 7 days. 5K for 5 days sounds much more sensible, like maybe I wouldn’t get burned out so fast and the overall quality would be higher. I might try this in November.

I have to have the detailed outline when writing. Otherwise, I spend too much time sitting and trying to decide what to write. Outlines are the only way for me to be productive.

Kate! In that first screen view, it looks like you have a split screen, left for notes and right for novelization. How the heckin' heck do I set that up in scrivner, is there a name for the button or feature to do that? As always, love seeing the pets cuties in your vlogs!

YES! Okay, so my button for it even disappeared for a while so I went on the hunt to find it again bahaha. If you're on Mac, go to View, Editor Layout, and then I have it split vertically! IT IS A LIFESAVER!!!

My outlines turn out to be a few paragraphs about each chapter where I describe what happens and maybe throw in some dialog. Then I look for gaps and fill out the scenes. That's what I'm doing now with my WIP. I did my first outline using a book called First Draft in 30 Days. An in-depth outline would be 20% to 30% or so of the completed novel. So, if I am aiming for 90K words, a detailed outline might be something like 25-30000 words. If I stretched myself I could probably manage 1500 words a day for six or seven days in a row.

Writing 5K and for 5 days.... I would say you did so good. I get burned out if I write more than 3K in one day. But I would like to know what is writing process is (Outline, zero drafts, etc). I saw an old video and just want to know if it has been updated over the course of time.

I haven't worked on my nanowrimo project in several days. For two reasons 1 I'm finished my first draft of it and don't want to rewrite it right now. 2. I'm kind of burned out on writing and need a break. (Trying to read and watch videos more to fill the creative well.)

My stretch days while drafting my previous project was 2000 words. So for july camp, I made that my daily target! 2500 words still feels unacheivable though.

Note about cats walking over keyboards: one of mine once did this and turned the screen sideways!! I had to phone a techie friend to find out how to make it normal again. (Which I've forgotten, I think it's something like Ctrl+arrow key, but I'm not certain.)

I'm normally 1-2k a day and Milwordy has proven I tap out at 3k so 3k a day for 5 days would be interesting to try. the last time I hit 3k multiple days in a row, it was 4 days and then I wrote less than 500 words per day for the next week. I totally burnt out so it's not really sustainable for me (no matter how much I want it to).

I love number based goals for others, but every time I try a number based goal, my writing goes to shit. I'm still trying to find the balance between "just getting something on the page" and "this is so bad that I'm going to be discouraged from writing for a week" 😅

I've never taken a class (outside of a few Masterclasses this past year) either! The typical "read a lot, write a lot" is really the best advice, I think! But joining a writing group and switching work and critiquing others (or offering to beta read!) has been the biggest difference to me. :)

I so admire your ability to let go and just write!🥳 Since I read that adverbs are bad, verbs aren't good either and one should kindly adopt a sober writing style, my spontaneity has gone and I second guess every single word I put on a page. It's tedious as f ... ish.
