Us Filipinos are very Family Oriented. Even if we are already adults, we still live with our parents. "Rest for now, I'll take care of everything" It can have a double meaning for others, it can mean them telling mom and dad to 'take a break' so to speak, it is now the child's turn to take care of them. For others, it's like telling their parents who are no longer around, to not worry while on the other side, that the child has taken to heart the parent's teaching and can now stand on their own feet, "To just rest peacefully now without worries, I can handle it" 😭😭

This song is very conflicted in the way that the melody is catchy and yet the meaning of the song tugs at your heart strings.

This will hit differently and so much more when you realize that this is a common story among Filipino households - Moms and Dads leaving their family to work abroad to give a “better future” for their children. They spend years and decades working abroad, missing their family, and doing everything to save their money to send it back to their family. And then when they finally go back home, after decades of working abroad, their kids, who were babies when they left, have already grown up - graduated college, or getting married. Imagine spending all your life working abroad and missing all your kids’ milestones.

The way Pablo assigned the lyrics ,,,, grrrrr 😭 They’ve said before Justin and Stell are the sweetest of the group because they’re always checking in and on their Moms. Then the verses to the Dads sung by the three who don’t have their dads beside them. So tired of crying but can’t stop listening. Sigh.

In the Filipino culture, we children have great regard to our parents / elderly. Most of us we would want to give back. Times wherein we just want our parents to stay still and its time for us (children) to do the rest. We want them to rest from the days and time they give and sacrifices for us. This song hits the hardest if we have those regrets if not being able to give back and let them rest from those tiring days they spent for us. Regrets prolly due to some unforeseen events. Event where they can no longer hear our “thank you” and gratefulness towards them. Regrets prolly because we don’t have the capability yet of returning the favor (though they never ask for it). Regrets prolly because we are far from them and this pandemic is hindering us of being with them or for any reason. Normally our parents (MaPa) would not share how hard life is, they would not tell us how tight things are. They would always keep inside them the struggles they are facing and normally they will always show their happy face for us not to worry. First part of the song, Justin talks about how our parents (MaPa) prioritize us in all aspects. In the Filipino culture, remember the day when you as a kid cries asking for a balloon and our parent would graciously get some coins and buy one for you. That moment we can only see the our happiness for getting what we simply want, but we cannot see their smile because we are happy with a simple thing. Josh’s part where he heed the memories and advise his (a) father gave him. That even though they are not together he promised of keeping them. Remember a milestone in our lives, our first step as a baby? With 30 times watching and analysis of the video lyrics... I conclude that this is a Lullaby for Parents.

I heard this song when my Mom was in the hospital, I made a video for her using a cover of this song to surprise her for her coming Birthday, the next day my sister called me to tell me that she passed away. Everytime I hear this song tears fall in to my eyes.I should have hugged her tighter the last time I was with her I could not even be with her to her last moment and burial because of the lockdown in the Philippines.😢

This is not just a song its a poem in the form of a song. I cried a lot. Their emotions were filled in the song..

A parents that through much circumstances they are here, even tho they might sometimes disagreed in few or some decisions we made. They are telling a different conclusions of our decisions but through that we can be tough, be ourselves, and being responsible in the future. Few or some parents might be in bad or good but they were our beloved parents even we twisted the world that our Father Lord God given to us. 💓

MAPA is a Tagalog term for MAP, and the word MaPa is a short term for Mama (Ma) and Papa (Pa). Therefore, MaPa, our parents, is like a MAP (map), they give us direction and they serve as our guide wherever we go. And as Pablo said, we will not be lost, because we have MaPa (parents as our map). Wherever we go, we can still go back to where we came from.

Josh singing about his "papa" is so painful because he grew up without a dad. I think it's his unsaid words to his dad that's why his voice conveyed so much raw emotions. 😭

It's interesting you say that about Josh's part, 'coz I teared up, too. I just fell into the multiverse of SB19 this week and found out that Josh never met his father (if I'm not mistaken), but the lyrics he sang was about 'Papa'. This actually breaks my heart. Also, this song hits many hearts. Many kids in the Ph grew up also without their parents as millions of Filipinos had to leave their families to work overseas (enter paperboats and the map). Parents not present in their kids' milestones for the sake of uplifting their families out of poverty. It's heartbreaking and inspiring at the same time. It's a beautiful song, too many happy but painful emotions as well.
