I test three different tunnel rams on the 406sbc dyno mule. Link to book with dyno results: weingartnerrac... Link to shirts: weingartnerrac... Website: wengines.com
Just for comparison. Many years ago, scca said you had to run 1 carb. And that got rid of the 1969 Z28 cross ram intake and dual 4 barrels. But that little 302 made some crazy rpm’s and good power. The theory was longer runners of the cross ram would be like a tunnel ram but keep it under hood. I would really like to see how one of those Intakes works on a larger cid e fine like this one.
I remember when ALL those manifolds were brand new! We ran a TR1-Y in 55 Chevy back in the 80's with a set of 660 center squirters on a 350 and got it to run 10,80's. But when that Holley intake came out, I could see it was kickass!!
Can’t forget about the WEIAND tunnel ram that hot rod magazine pumped into my brain pretty much every other magazine for years saying that it made the most torque and the most power out of any manifold, I’d really like to see you get a hold of one of those I don’t think they make it anymore but they’re still fairly common, you used to be able to buy a kit from Summit and it came with 2 450 holley carbs or 2 660 holley carbs
For all you guys crying about not being able to see the graphs you should buy the man’s books. It’s not Eric’s fault your Radio Shack trs-80 computer screen’s clarity sucks. Eric puts this info on RU-vid for free. If you knew how much time goes into making a 20min RU-vid video you wouldn’t be complaining. If you can’t afford a $30 book, you don’t need a race car.
note the "ram" in tunnel ram refers to the sonic wave created by the air charge hitting the intake valve when it closes the pulse travels up the tunnel and when it hits the top it travels back down the runner again and if timed right it will meet the intake valve as its opening ramming a charge of air into the cylinder. One of the reasons why its hard to find an old tunnel ram is most of them are hacked up tuning the sonic wave timing to the engine.
Just for comparison I would 1969 302 Z28 dual 4 barrel Chevy cross ram, maybe one of the aftermarket ones. An Edelbrock Smokey Ram SY1 single 4 barrel cross ram, always liked these: ford Cross Boss Ford 302 with autolight carb and the mopar nascar cross ram.
I know you said the Buffco top looked ridiculous, but on a car, the farther it sticks out of the hood the better, huge style points! Would love to see that Pro Dominator fully ported on a set of your Dragon Slayers! That would make some power!
Thanks for doing this test Eric, I’ve been waiting for this comparison for a while. We’ve got a Dart 400 little M, 215 plat, Crane solid roller, Ed Victor ram with both tops, Holley 830 comp carbs, 1 7/8 headers. As always very informative test, thanks Eric.
Good video Eric. The dyno helps to see some difference between the intake styles. As you know the track can show the dynamics. For what you have shown, and my combination I would use the Edelbrock street ram, port matched, with possibly a plenum spacer. I enjoy your videos.
The holly pro dominator was the best intake out there !!! They should’ve never got rid of it !! I still have mine and I am doing another small block and that intake will be on there with boost
@WeingartnerRacing I'm looking at converting my 383lt1 to a tunnel ram or a single plane. Stock intake is ported but really short runners. Max rpm 7500 but gives up a bit in mid range I feel.
Honestly, the raw numbers in the columns are a pita to decipher on a 72-in screen that I watch your videos on. The graphs are what viewers use to compare differences in runs. I wish you would just stick to the graphs.
This test kind of knocke one of those "everybody knows..." things off its perch. I have heard taper favore top end, but it seems for this motor the opposite was true. Considering the pro dominator is a 70's piece... I'm impressed. And it seems the Street Ram is correctly named. I wonder if results trend similarly on a 434. A dyno is the woodchipper for all kinds of assumptions. Thanks for sharing this test.
There is another tunnel ram you missed, the Edelbrock Pro Ram II.....wonder how it would have done. Long discontinued, would have fell in lineage between the Street Ram and Victor Ram
One other thing I just remembered did I miss the test between the AFR 227 and the promax heads that you had programmed and cnc’d after your port design?
How long does the contest is I am liking the t shirt your son's nova and your logo is pretty cool. I don't know when I will buy one but just curious on how long the contest last or end
