I love how woolie doesn't grasp the concept of robots trying to be like their creators in some antiquated and non-functional aspects even if they wish to destroy us. Even the act of destroying what is essentially your God is aknowledging your creator and in some capacity wishing for your creator to aknowledge what is essentially your superiority.

is woolie aware that no animal has wheels? do you think there might be a reason no animal grew bio-wheels? legs are much more effective for traversing rough, uneven terrain than wheels are. how often do cars get stuck because of tiny holes and indents in the road? how often does a human on foot get stopped by those? wheels are only effective over fairly smooth terrain. there's a number of very good reasons why people are working to build helper bots that are either bipedal or quadrupedal and not have everything be on wheels.
Off road vehicles and tanks are a thing, and in the story settings this conversation would cover there is enough tech to deal with current impediments. Functionally, when it comes to human engineering I'd say what Woolie is saying hold weight here, efficiency isn't always the first thing we go to. You're saying wheels are inferior and that's why they're going with legs for "helper bots", but couldn't part of that just be that they want to work out the challenge of coordinating legs? Personally I feel that there could also be "helper bots" that use wheels or tracks but its just not as exciting as seeing something with legs. Such things could even be in development, but the alternative just gets more attention. I've no desire to look into that though.
The real reason there aren't animals with fucking wheels is because living things are limited in what they can be shaped like, wheels themselves can not work on something like an animal because of how flesh, muscle and bone make it impossible to create something like that realistically. Think of how a bike works for example, the Wheel isn't something natural and attached to the rest of the bike, it's held in place but is not directly connected to anything other wise it couldn't actually be spinning. With an actual body the wheel has to be connected to some thing other wise it couldn't grow to fit the rest of the body, and if it's connected to anything like skin or muscle or bone then it couldn't be able to spin for very long before ripping right through something. But yes even Wheels are limited, they can't be used to climb or traverse indoor areas very effectively and the design itself isn't something compacted enough to fit into smaller spaces like basements, caves or tunnels. Then there is the fact that a tank like lower body means that it also has a limited movement of fire and an obvious flaw of having treads and a space between them that it can not get between. Legs have their uses, the problem is that they are fewer compared to something like wheels that have more general use in combat areas.

The reason people can beat Droidekas is because their shields can block energy weapons and fast moving objects, but not physical objects that are moving even relatively slowly. So they figure out that you can just roll grenades through their shields and blow them the hell up.
Legs are the perfect form of movement, treads are slightly more limiting and a floating robot would have trouble with power, RC heli's kill battery super quick and jets also use a lot of feul. A humanoid build is versitile and superior to wheely boxes in combat or movement. Anything you can do it can do better. And look at all the cool shit humans are capable of with their arms and legs
Jorg the Mercenary Spearman, a gorilla shaped robot would be good for treversal of environments but if you want to go that route there's a better solution, a robotics company made a rescue drone that looks like a centaur with quadrapedal movement and arms for assistance in moving objects among other utility purposes, a humans greatest tool is its hands. Nano bots would be good too considering there are technologies that already can make free forming robots but the AI still needs work. As far as the limitations to the human body you mentioned, i dont think robo cop or chappie can get back pain and they can probably bloth climb a tree, if androids of that magnitude existed they wouldn't be limited by our weak evolution, they'd be unhindered by their superior structure
A big flying orb with a gun and a tiny flying marble sized orb with a gun cover a lot of what an actual AI robot apocalypse would need. And like the guys said, bombs would cover most of the rest.

The closest thing that we have to spin to win robot with all the guns is armored core project phantansma the final boss which is just a cube with lasers EVERYWHERE and it spins as it shoots
Legs are useful for manipulating the location of the center of gravity on a robot, as well as scaling vertical surfaces. A robot with legs could cross a tightrope.

If mechs worked, we'd build them IRL. But they don't, and any situation where they could work is extremely limited compared to just utilizing a tank instead.
i think its funny how gundam treats mecha, because one hand, the ball is a joke, and zakus are somehow really good at killing tanks and planes. but when mobile armors come in, they wreck shop, they are the boss machines of gundam most of the time. by all accounts mobile armors are superior, but mobile suits are still considered the pinnacle of military machinery. maybe im forgetting something, but mobile armors from my memory are pretty practical by all accounts.
Mask Hyruken i know, im talking design wise, stuff like the bigro is more practicle design wise then the zaku, it doesnt have legs that dont help with flight in space, it has seemingly simpler arms, hell you could remove them completey. then you would just have a big space fighter, but thats kind of my point, fighters and tanks supposedly get dunked on by mobile suits, but mobile armors are closer to heavily armored space fighters than mobile suits, and they wreckshop.
The terrain issue is pretty important in basically any environment besides paved roads, there is a reason that almost all terrestrial animals have legs.
Woolie is so hung up about legs, he says they should have tank treads and completely misses hovering/flying robots. There is no terrain they can't go over. You could even keep their legs in that case.
I 100% agree with woolie, in reality legs are more trouble then their worth on a robot because you have to design it to be able to stand upright on its own accord and you dont get anything more out of it that a more animal like or even tank like form cant achieve with a lower profile and less complexity, as much as we dont like to think about it, KISS or "Keep It Simple Stupid" does apply to sophisticated things like Robotics too XD
pocenha the fact that we don't know how much it would cost to build a gundam is part of the problem, and by cost i don't mean monetarily, i mean in terms of the amount of effort it would take vs what we would get out of it. because if a wheeled tank is cheaper and more effective, guess what's never going to be used in active combat? a gundam.
Compare to human legs It going to consume more energy beside lifting its legs It going to need to stay balance in bumpy terrains and how much force it need to put down when sticking down to the ground like steep lands(up a hills and down hills) compare to to tank that need to push itself back and forth
I think Pat in his infinite wisdom of pettiness forgets that the billions of dollars that went into Big Dog the four legged robot that can walk and keep its balance....all those billions went into it being able to do that one thing, all its sophisticated software went into a singular purpose, it doesn't have room to do other things because something simple and natural to a biological being like balancing takes up the robots entire being to pull off, in order for a robot to be able to do even a fraction of all the things a human being can do, it would need an advanced supercomputer the size of a refrigerator in it, then it would be too large to get around under its own power, all to make the argument that Robots should be designed with coolness over practicality in real life XD
