Episode one in the 2018 scale Hive saga. Throughout the summer I will be featuring these hives on scales to see how and when the gain weight from honey. I've seen this done by beekeepers in the past but haven't seen anyone around me doing it lately.
Subscribe and stay with me all summer long for a really interesting ride!!!

Thanks Devan. Been keeping single deeps for 5 years now but only starting to keep them for honey as the first 4 years were for increases which were for sale. Now, starting just 2 for honey this year and will add more each year from now. Great stuff and thanks much from Marengo, WI. USA

Love your videos Devan, thank you so much for sharing your knowledge! You seem to cage your queens often when you're doing an inspection, but as a new beekeeper I'm lucky if I even spot my queen. Could you please do a video with some tips on finding her? Thank you!

I just reversed my deeps and made plenty of room by checkerboarding. I notice i still have plenty of honey every year in the spring to. I also have a swarming problem no matter what I do, so my mentor told me to eliminate my queen excluders. I thinking of just taking my top deeps off, adding brood frames and bees to double my hives. I'm going to try your single deep approach.Im in Massachusetts so we have the about the same winter.

Picked up a platform scale very similar at a auction a couple of years ago and set up a double deep hive on it. as of 5-3 the double weighed 71 lbs up from 69 last week. The season is starting in N W wisconsin

Awesome! It must have been over 5 years ago I saw a presentation on scale hives by an old beekeeper and I've wanted to do some ever since. I can't wait until the nectar starts flowing.

Hi Devan - I enjoyed you videos! Thanks for your teaching heart. What state / province are you in?

Awesome! It's amazing how many bees were in the green lid hive. The beige hive, is the honey crystallized in the honey frames from last year?

I think that honey was pretty much still liquid, but I'll scrape away some cappings next time and check.

Thanks Devan, excellent video as always. Just one question. I noticed that bottom boards you are using, don't have any landing board in the front. usually, bottom boards are longer than brood box by inch or so in order to make the landing easier for bees, especially when they are returning with some pollen or nectar load. Is there any special reason for such design?
@DevanRawn
@DevanRawn 6 лет назад
haha, in my experience bottom boards are usually flush with the box and the landing board style is the exception ;) But really the landing board is nice for beekeepers to watch but the bees land happily on the face of the hive and walk in just as they would in a hollowed out tree. Flush bottom boards mean equipment can be stored easier and in some cases they're easiier if you're moving many colonies on a truck.

thanks for answering Devan. I thought about rain water and wasps as possible reasons.

Hi Devan, can I ask 2 questions re your one brood box system. I use 8 frame boxes....will that still be ok? And do you lift frames of brood early spring to give queen more room. Cheers Deb (Australia)

Any idea why bees neglect a portion of the hive, like at 7:19?

How soon do you put supers on your hives
@DevanRawn
@DevanRawn 6 лет назад
Obviously depends on your area, the year, and the strength of any given hive, but lots of years I use the May long weekend as a rough guide. If you're managing double brood chambers you likely have some more flexibility with your timing, but every hive is different.

That Bee Man at Faith Apiaries . Great question I'd like to know as well. Also very interested in Devon's video recording setup. Your videos are just what I'm looking for. Awesome, thank you.

Hey Thanks, I've got a Rode wireless Lav mic that I'm trying to use as often as I can. I got a fair amount of complaints when I just use a shotgun mic on top of the camera, I really have to speak towards the camera and as close as possible. With the lav mic I can mumble away while I look through the hives and you can still hear me. I've also been paying more attention to the levels in post production and I make quite a lot of adjustments to try to keep it consistent.

For video my main camera is a sony a6300, I use a variety of lenses but the 18-105 F4 is probably the most common unless i get into macro shots. I also have an RX10iv that you can see me use for some other shots. I really love the RX10, it's an amazing all-in-one camera that I plan to use a lot more.
