I'm a beekeeper based in SOUTHERN ONTARIO, CANADA! This channel is to present beekeeping in a fun way, to answer questions I hear every day, and to provide myself with a creative outlet. This Channel was also NOT intended to become a "how-to" beekeeping channel. I make videos about the way I keep bees, and what methods and management styles work for me.
FAQ's Q: Where did I get my Belt / What is it? A: They're made by Paul Kelly from the UofG. If you know Paul, get in touch with him to buy one. Otherwise, here's a link dancingbeeequipment.com/collections/beekeeping-tools/products/bee-belt

How many gallons from August 1 (when I pull my honey) to the beginning of sugar brick feeding would you expect to feed if your 10 frame hive was pretty empty on stores.
Hi Devin saw your video..really good. I 've been running double deep to help control hive population. I've seen other vids on single. Brood chamber. But you and others are having to pull brood out regularly to control over population or swarming..and make Nucs or splits. I don't want to make splits or Nucs all the time..are wintering in singles as well? If so how do you provide enough honey to last the winter?
if you didn't have queen confined to one box and had plenty of empty comb for her you wouldn't be having to go through your hives knocking down queen cells, you prevent issues, not waste time fixing problems you created. if a queen is under 2yrs old they will not be inclined to swarm if you keep the honey off them and queen has plenty of room to lay.
misconception: top insulation (>6cm, >2.5inch) = no moisture over bee cluster but running down the sides to the bottom where bees can drink it - like in natural tree cavities! See Prof Tom Seeley: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-xIO3F35nlyE.htmlsi=GNzggdDYdsXM84iE&t=2774 -- no top entrence!
math also includes: better bred Qs & situation in winter: honey storage + brood/cluster-frames in one box: that's why continental beekeepers have that Langstroth jumbo/Dadant box : 470 x 370 x 295 mm; frame: 480 x 285 mm (after Brother Adam ) and in square 12 frame design to switch position 90degrees of boxes
I still come back and review Devan's videos from time to time. By far the best beekeeping vids on RU-vid. Great channel. Very digestible. Good luck in Florida
Sticky boards are not really necessary, just a board will do the trick. Anything falling down is usually dead or not very mobile. If you have any mites on the board? Then you will undoubtedly have hundreds or thousands more in the hive.
The problem with single management is it doesn't lend itself well to natural beekeeping. once you remove the supers the bees are starving. There is a limit to what they can put in one box so it requires more inputs like feeding, supplements etc..
Hi from the central Highlands, Victoria Australia 👋. We don’t use queen excluders and find that over winter, the colony survives by positioning centrally between the upper and lower boxes. If the Spring is colder, we may extract less honey (over the season), but we haven’t lost a colony over winter. Thanks for your post- it’s interesting 👍
Nice higrise here !!! Thanks for your fime asnd explanation - and sharing. Are you going to leave A SINGLE Brood box through the next winter ? ... and how much honey they need for winter season if a single brood chamber ...Sept- March. ???? Thanks !
I'm my opinion (and others) your better to move queen box and put new nuc where mother colony was, that way you get foragers coming back to original location to keep up bee population since they won't have a laying queen for a month
This video, especially the math part, is the reason why I started managing hives as single brood chambers and using queen excluders 5 years ago. Everything became easier and simpler. And that math part is true in practice.
Devan , questions please , do you use screen bottom boards ? Also how do you harvest your honey ? What do you leave for the bees in fall and winter ? Thanks Bruce
