Hey!
A how-to on making trees for your architectural models of various scales.
I've initially aimed to use materials around the workshop and no painting or further post-production so the process is faster for those deadlines :)
I hope you enjoy the video, please comment if there are any suggestions or thoughts.
You can also find me on Instagram: @iamjustamodelmaker
Or join my playlist to hear the choons in the workshop on Spotify:

Ciao!

Thanks! They are just 9 I could think of off the top my head. There are more if people are interested to see. Plus more detailed ones if needed. Thanks for watching :)

Hey Rebecca! Thank you for your kind thoughts and watching the videos. I'm new to this, and am learning quite a bit with the whole video making process, hope it's ok from a viewer point of view. Anyways, looking to make more videos and cover more topics to share tips with eager creative peeps out there. Thanks again, mega love!

Hey ya! Thanks for the feedback, I've always had a need for quick abstract basic trees. Wanted to share these ideas and if there was more of a demand, I would go another level deeper to create ore realistic ones to complement those model/diorama projects. Cheers again!

Hey ya! Thanks for watching and commenting. I was considering doing another video with even more trees but more detailed and elements involved. I didn't know if that is something that other people would like to see, as this video might have been too simple for some... Thanks again!

What would be the best way to do palm trees and tropical vegetation? Or is it better to keep them generic and show in my drawings?
@Iamjustamodelmaker
@Iamjustamodelmaker 2 года назад
Hey ya! I would consider two aspects, firstly the scale of your model and then the deadline. If the scale is big enough and allows you stylise your tropical trees, I'd use wire and cut paper leaves. Fold a piece of paper, cut the shape and include the branch. Then cut slants into the leaf. Make the main body of the tree out of wire, and wrap the leaves as you make the trunk thicker. If stuck for time balance time and effort between physical model and drawings. The trees are to give scale and style only. Good luck!

Thanks for this video. What could you suggest for 1:500 white model?
@Iamjustamodelmaker
@Iamjustamodelmaker 2 года назад
Hey ya! White model is good to keep it clean and focus on the geometry. It's a small scale but think of the style you're trying to achieve. Abstract, corporate, or more conceptual? Keep it clean and use the trees in white to give it a depth to your scheme. I'm planning more videos in the new year and hopefully answer call to actions. In the meantime best of luck with your goals.

@@Iamjustamodelmaker thank you for this reply. I have to show the urban concept of the project. Since we want to preserve the old trees, and adding some more, I think they are important to show as well. I collected some natural stuff that can fit the scale, but I am worried they won't last in place untill June. Probably I'm going to try your stryropor technique with some kind of wood or metal stick. I hope it works. Thanks again.
@Iamjustamodelmaker

It also comes down to your scheme too, I would keep it simple and not make a huge contrast between the flat landscape and the focus of the model itself. At 1:500, it could be quite abstract, even round sticks of varying heights and density could give a sense of tree areas. Good luck!

@Iamjustamodelmaker
@Iamjustamodelmaker 3 года назад
@Nabil Diab There are many ways in doing topology, with cardboard and foam it's possible, but also to consider the look and feel you're after. I have some ideas in my mind, and will do a video this month to help with making slopes in different ways. Stay tuned :)

Hey, can you pls tell me more about that cutting machine that is used in second tree?
@Iamjustamodelmaker
@Iamjustamodelmaker Год назад
Hey ya! The hot wire cutter is a great machine. I've had it for quite some time and it's the best one I've used. I have tried other ones but they don't meet the mark of the German styrocutter. I run the no.3 as it's the biggest one they did at the time. It has a lot of attachments and can do so many things for massing studies and all kinds of developing prototypes. Styrocutter was based in Dusseldorf and probably still make these accurate machines. Highly recommended.
@corentinpele7527

What is the type of material about the second model ?
@Iamjustamodelmaker
@Iamjustamodelmaker 3 года назад
Hi! The second tree type uses styrofoam, it's quite a dense one and comes in pink, blue, yellow, and white. The white one might be harder to find, but saves using special paints that doesn't melt the foam. Ghiant Acryl spray cans are good and would be safe to use on styrofoam. And the trunk of the tree, I used a satay/kebab stick as it has a sharp point to insert into the foam nicely. Hope this helps, good luck with your projects!
