The OBDLink LX (and MX) is more advanced than the cheap Bluetooth dongles.. The problem with the cheap ones on EV is the larger amount of traffic on the can bus saturate the Bluetooth link. The MX and LX adapters supports setting up a filter on in the dongle, so only the frames your interested in is transferred over the limited bandwidth Bluetooth connection.

anything BT3.0 (which uses 802.11 anyway) upwards should be fine bandwidth fine. The cheaper ones are bound to be 2.1

@@rkan2 Even if the Bluetooth link is able to keep up with the speed, you will save the battery of the phone, due to offloading the the filtering to the dongle.

ELM327 adapters also have filters. But OBDLink has more accurate filters, and is faster overall. They also struggle and miss packets when you want to see the ALL tab, or do CAN dumps.

Wouldn't it be great if Tesla showed all the good stuff (all those parameters) in the car display or phone app ? It shouldn't be needed to hack your own car I guess. I think 102% of the tesla owners would be very interested to have info like this.

Works awesome! The wire bundle plug (male end) on the drivers side needs the release depressed and pulls free from the female end that stays fixed on the center console for the 2018 Model 3

Good Shit! I used a soft plastic squeegee that you use for vinyl rap. I ran it along the top and it popped loose. 2018 Model 3's do have a different connector and pinout. The site you linked, will email ask which one you live in the US after ordering. Amazing people who make each component.

If you are looking for things to test, I would be interested in voltage drop (pack, min, max cell, difference between min and max cell) during a full throttle run at max kw draw at say 90,70,50,30,15% soc and what that max draw is at various soc. With that ir can be calculated. Perhaps at warm cell temps. Thanks

Great app and a good video! Given the numbers from 11:00 we can calculate the consumption while driving. Driven total 7740 kWh for 39.376 km means an average consumption of 19.66 kWh/100km. Is that number close to real? Can Bjørn confirm? Seems quite high compared to what everybody comunicates and official numbers...

@@scratchpad7954 Yeah I did not wrote that this consumption is efficient. I was rather staggered that the consumption is that high. Because everyone says the average consumption of Tesla's is more in the region of 15kWh/100km. Thats why I asked the questions. Not everyone lives in America you know. Mostly in Europe there is a dot every three zeros. So one thousand is 1.000, one million is 1.000.000 in Europe. It is the opposite to the american decimals.

hello bjorn I am brand new to the world of electricity.. I have just acquired a second-hand Tesla model 3 performance from 2021 with 69000km... in terms of load on roughly 12000kw of load about 2/ 3 of DC supercharge.. being a bit of a geek I immediately tried to install scan my tesla and looking more closely my full nominal pack is at 72.9kw for a full pack when new of 82kw is this alarming? when do you think this? I'm going to try an emptying close to 0 and a max charge to 100 to recalibrate the bms to see what that gives... ps sorry for the spelling I'm French and I use google translate thank you for your answer 👍

Bjorn, does it show other car data such as use of the blinkers, lights, navigation info, etc? It would make a great companion with something like "hudway cast" to have a HUD in the car.

It does, there are some third party displays that use this port for an instrument cluster.

I just wanted to share my insights, since I couldn't find anything regarding this subject online. I don't have any android around, we are iphone users. There is an app "Scan my T3sla" on AppStore, which costs around 10 eur. I just tried it yesterday. Unfortunately, I ended up asking for a refund. The android app is different, it has a better UI and comes with more features. What I find interesting is the developer (Armund Borsand, Borsand Engineering) is behind both apps, on android and iOS, the price is similar, although the iOS app is definitely inferior. I will buy a second hand cheap android phone just for this.

Found my own answer for the question below. All I had to do was put the car in Drive, then Stator and Rotor data show up.

@@whuzzzup Only cars with emissions. The model 3 does not have an OBD port or support the OBD protocol. That's why you need a cable to hack access to the CAN, only a few OBD adapters will work that can read the can pin, and then only ScanMyTesla can read the proprietary data

Wait, the M3 does not have an OBD port? How is this legal in the US and EU (ok Norway isn't in the EU, but I doubt they build anything special for them)?

OBD is a ICE diagnostic port. Tesla just didn't try to get rid of it until the newer MCU of Model 3. Legally BEVs don't need them since there is no combustion engine

obd2 port is for check emissions is not too high. If car is electric this is not needed

@@perandersnilsson1974 No. OBD is to check a lot of things. Emissions (what emissions?) are not really a part of it. You could check O2 sensor values and some temperatures, but that's about as good as it gets on most cars regarding emissions.

Charging cycles = 140... giving the odometer of 39376 km and making the maths 39376 / 140 = 281,2 Km per cycle x 1500 (expected lifetime cycles according to Elon) = 421885 Km of expected lifetime? Am I right?

The MX will most likely work. The support for filtering the frames is needed due to bandwidth constrains on Bluetooth.. Both LX and MX support this feature..

Why does Tesla M3 allow you to change the amp charge rate. Does it affect battery performance or battery life to charge at lower rate of charge

BIll Ligon it’s unlikely that your AC charge rate would have any impact on battery life. The m3 has an onboard charger that tops out at 11.5kW - or under 5% of max charge rate... so even the max ac charge rate is too low to even think about it causing issues. Additionally, when the battery SOC is high the car will reduce the charge rate as needed (mostly depending on temperature) so the car wouldn’t let you damage the battery. The adjustable limit is needed for the car to taper the charge rate at high SOC and is likely a user adjustable feature to keep from tripping breakers when charging from less than ideal electrical systems.

Sorry no. Apple have close Bluetooth so it not possible too use OBD2 over Bluetooth in IOS.
