SCANDAL Anzhelika Terliuga - Ivet Goranova Semi-final World Championship 2023 Budapest Kumite -55 

I won a protest at the USA Karate national championships this year for a similar error. The match was reset to exactly that point in time. The time lost was less significant. It was a few seconds. Then, I saw a similar mistake made at the Jr. PKF semi-final match. This was only a second or two. I told the coaching staff and a protest was made. The match was brought back to that moment in time. So, this is consistent with what I saw at two other events. It is unfortunate, but it appears to be the correct application of the rules.

One thing I am absolutely certain of: regardless of the color of the medal, the work that Ms. Terliuga and the team do for Sports Karate, the training they present, the dedication and commitment will not be shaken. Congratulations Ms. Terliuga and the team.

You clearly won that match 😡 and seriously, a rematch for a "timer problem"???? Then they should fire the responsible of the timer, because the rematch doesn't make sense. It's not the athletes's fault 🤦🏽‍♀️🤦🏽‍♀️🤦🏽‍♀️ Stay strong, YOU ARE NUMBER ONE 🎉

In my opinion, the WKF could of handled this so differently. Given that there is no rule that states what is actually SUPPOSED to be done in a situation like this they could of chose to do what they want. The decision to restart the match at that point of the match was something that they just made up because nowhere in the rules does it state anything about this. So if they were going to FIND a solution to this mistake that the timekeeper made, I feel there could of been much better solutions. It is important to remember that the time that ran off the clock didn’t really change the flow of the match or the strategy. Anzhelika was still going to be pressuring forward since she was losing. She was still going to have senshu. The outcome of this much I don’t feel would’ve been different. I think that something definitely should’ve been done to rectify the problem. What? Idk! Maybe 14-11 and just add 14 seconds to the clock. 14 seconds because 24 seconds ran off, they adjusted it by 10 seconds, so just continue with the remaining 14. The athlete shouldn’t pay the price for the timekeepers mistake. And if the opposing coach saw that this happened she could’ve stood up and made a bigger deal and pointed out the time to the referees. Lastly, the most mind boggling and unprofessional thing about this is the fact that they only took 10!seconds off. Not only is this the world championships, not only is it the semi finals of the world championships, but it’s live in front of a worldwide audience. The WKF and the referees should’ve had more respect for the athletes involved, as well as the sport of karate, and for the world championships and taken the time to look at the video and see exactly how much time came off (24seconds) and take off that amount of time (24 seconds). Not just make up a random amount of time (10 seconds) and take that off. Sorry that this happened. You have been the best fighter in the world for a long time and deserved this opportunity. I don’t think you should quit or retire this way. You have to take the next one. You have to. Anyway, congrats to you and your team!

Why does this match need a rematch? I don't think this timing error was unfair to Ivet. It is ridiculous to start the rematch from 5-4 . This is completely unfair to Lika.

I watched it holding my breath and unfortunately this happens sometimes. I started to train Karate in 1995 and as a person who is still active in tournaments, I can say that rules has been improved a lot. For example there was no VR, feet protection, leg protection and body protection when i started. Anyway you did a great match and it can be good movie. Keep going and dont be discouraged. The WKF's decision was (legally) wrong. Only in the event that the timer failure had not been noticed until the end of the fight would this deficiency have justified a repeat. However, the judges noticed the error within the bout time and then decided to shorten the remaining bout time by 10 seconds. The fact that the bout time actually should have been shortened by 24 seconds is irrelevant. The referees made their decision within the scope of their jurisdiction for this fight. Such a decision is called a factual decision.

It was an unfortunate situation. I was watching the original match and was confused when the fighters were called back. The ruling of the protest however, is consistent across WKF, PKF, etc. As a coach I tell my athletes, sometimes you may not like or agree with the decisions but you gotta shake it off and focus on your job. In Kumite that is to score and try not to be scored upon. In kata it's to squeeze out as many points as possible. Either way it's to do your best with honour and integrity. Both fighters exhibited exceptional skill. Well done.

I really do not know the standards and procedures of the WKF but If they saw the problem right there in the middle of the fight the obvious thing to do for me should have been calling all the authorities, referees and the coaches of both teams and propouse different solutions RIGHT THERE. There was no need to wait until the fight was over to do something, in that moment, they just could propouse to watch the VR and count how much seconds were lost and discount them from the current clock or simply restart the match from the beggining. Also the bulgarian team show no honor, they saw the problem right there and they waited until the end of the fight to then make a protest just because they lost. That's not what karate is about.

I am not specialist in Karate (I teach another martial art in Japan) but I see that the lady from Bulgaria is better.

Wkf perdeu a oportunidade de ficar bem com ambos os lados, somente fazer valer a pontuação considerando o tempo que não foi descontado no momento que o cronômetro parou, igual foi mencionado no video. Acredito que a vontade não era fazer o remake por ser injusto ,porem o compromisso com vários fatores podem forçar tal situação.

With the comfort of pausing, replaying and slowing down, I see many points offered on both sides where the criteria for scoring were not met (ao blocked a punch with her glove but 1 point was given to aka, aka was in the process of reaping ao, but the 3 points were giving to her for ura mawashi despite the lack of zanshin,...) Referees are humans, they make mistake, especially when athletes are going so fast ! I think it is unfair to point the finger to anyone. Everybody at the championship this day was there because karate is their passion. No one, i believe, was there to screw somebody. Close call, the players were evenly matched. The restart might seem unfair but it seems to have be done according to the regulations. Aka managed to refocus better. Two great athletes anyway, hat tip to Miss Anzhelika and Miss Ivet.

This is a total shame. they needed justify this mistake in public after the fight and accept the 11:8, it's a minimum. But i'm hope to those things goes to discusse one day. Well done in my book you won that,, I feel sorry for both of you combatants such horrible organization in a World Champ Competition is unacceptable. Organizer have technical issue and no one notice that timer was off neither did the judges on the tami 2 meter from it not very good at their job?! The match should either been called as played out first! Or a full restarted from 0 - 0 that would been fair for both combatant! The amount of failed score counting and clock that stop or don't start during WKF matches, every competition something happen to the scoreboards... incompetence! Keep your spirit high and be proud you did great!

Totally unfair situation. The clock (the judge) failed but that time was adjusted so it didn´t affect the result. There was no reason for a rematch. Anzhelika clearly won and should have been in the final.

This is sad but not unfair since that rule exist and it is a valid protest all around the world, probably they should have consider to modify the rule for the future same as the new rule that the one who scores the higher technique win the match in case of a draw, that is really unfair in the case of an ippon given by mistake and a final draw will give the victory for the participant who get the benefit from a mistake of the judges.

The refers are totally wrong when decided to clear your achievements . They should be rejected from their job at all !

You can see the mistake of the official. They weren’t paying attention at all and someone had to go over and basically wake them up. They deserve to be fired and the WKF needs to seriously examine how they are ruining high-level sport karate. It’s due to their incompetence that karate is no longer an Olympic sport.

10 sec cut not good. right solution AKA 5:4 AO AKA Chui 1 for Jogai and 53 sec on the clock. then resume the bout and then the result was 11:8 for AO and CHUI 2 and CHUI 3 AKA for excessive contact and pushing

Very unhappy situation. But 1. it was not for the first time in karate history and decision was consistent. Timekeeper, kansa a and maybe tatami manager made several mistakes. Time was stopped 24sec but only 10sec reduced. Why should Ivet defend win 14 seconds longer? 1. if this happen to ukraninian (and many others), they would raise an official protest, too 2. Why you blame bulharian side? Everybody seen the mistake, team official (not a coach) wachted video immeidately during match and they filed a protest, that was only valid option they had.

What an absolute FRAUD!! And what was with Ivet’s 4th score, that wasn’t even a score. I am so sorry this has happened to you, they have a lot to answer for. This is disgusting and so wrong! Clearly Terliuga is the better fighter and deserves to have gone through to the final. Terrible judging. Politics in karate makes a comeback. I will bet my money on this being a tactic and intentional from the beginning. No wonder their not back in the Olympics with this rubbish going on

WKF karate is a shame to martial arts. How could those ura mawashi's be effective in a real fight? She loses her balance after most of her kicks. Why don't the sllow the other fighter continue her take down techniques?

Totally wrong solution. The fight should not be restarted after the result is reached. Figure it out once the timer has realized that the clock didn't start. Once both sides agree to restart the fight, no protests should be allowed. It's to late. The results should have stood after the initial fight was over.

The match had full time and definite result! Totally unfair! Need the refferes name! His connections and why this situation was created. It puts shame on the world karate federation, if such situations happen!

This is just UNFAIR. I am really sorry that they stole your final. You both were good but you were better and the score tells that. I wish you at the next world championship you take what you deserve.

Consistent with other timer-related errors. Still bullshit though. The athlete should not have to go through situations like these when it was entirely the time-controllers error. Referee should have license removed.

It's just unbelievable and horrible at the same time. I have never seen such incompetence on the part of the judges in my life! Who were these judges? Are they blind? Illiterate to press a damn timer button? That's why the timekeeper was put there. This was a World Championship, not a children's competition! The WKF can bury itself and I hope it never returns to the Olympic program! Anzhelika, you are a World Champion, this video clearly proves it. Fortunately, karma worked and the one who "won" here lost the gold medal!

First of all, you don’t act like the champion you are.. total lack of sportsmanship! What happened is not anyone’s fault but wkf. But according to the rules they did right by bringing the match at that exact time. Second, let’s be honest - some of the points they gave to you were not real, and that was not the first time. Third, if you are so good why didn’t you beat Ivet the second time, there was only 1 point difference,it should not be a problem for you. And last - even if you went to final you cannot know if your the champion or tuba! And if you were in the same situation I am sure your couch would do exact the same, so congratulations on your 3rd place and quit the drama already.
