Hello there. I thought as a Swede I'd clarify this as it's quite a common misconception. Scandinavia consists of only three countries; Sweden, Norway and Denmark. Then there are "the Nordic countries" which consists of Scandinavia, Finland, Iceland, Greenland and the Faroe Islands.

@hawkstable8889
@hawkstable8889 2 года назад
Lack of stealth capabilities limits its viability though, so it's kinda just sold as a "rubbish plane for poor people" as James May would probably put it. We can see this in the fact that even countries with relatively small military budgets like Finland, Netherlands and Norway are buying F-35s instead, since their combat effectiveness justifies the hefty price tag, and not to mention Lockheed Martin's F-35 offer to Finland was actually cheaper than Saab's Gripen offer iirc. Much like the Eurofighter Typhoon and Dassault Rafale, the Gripen mostly just fills a niche for militaries that can't buy more advanced aircraft for whatever reason, would it be due to the price or political reasons.
@Mornomgir

yeah they sweet as hell. Especially with the ghosting capabilities of the new EW they have.
@johanmetreus1268
@johanmetreus1268 2 года назад
@@hawkstable8889 Finland and Norway buying American planes is politics, and unless someone can offer twice the performance to half the price that will be the default choice, especially for Norway as they rely heavily on the USA reinforcements to bulk up their ground- and air forces. Stealth capabilities are nice, but what really hampers Gripen is the lack of range. That design choice was for two reasons: * Keeping up the tradition of not posing an offensive threat against USSR/Russia. Ranges are kept long enough to strike any harbour around the Baltic sea, but that's about it. * Since peacetime turnaround for rearm/refuel is 10-15 minutes, the doctrine is to dump the full load on the numerically superior enemy and then head back to get more. Purchasing price is just part of the cost though, it is usually a lot easier to have the politrickians on board for buying new latest and greatest stuff than to foot the bill to use them. Flygrevyn #8 2021 had some interesting numbers of cost per flight hour, done by an independent Britsh firm: F-35: 140 000 SEK Typhoon: 121 000 SEK Rafale: 111 000 SEK Super Hornet: 74 000 SEK F-16: 47 000 SEK JAS 39: 31 000 SEK Austria's Typhoons' has spent surprisingly large amount of time in the hangars due to this, with the pilots relegated to simulator training in Germany to keep the worst rust away.

@lohrtom

You can tell the Harpoon at what range to turn its seeker head on. If you know the ranges of the ship from the AWACS and there is a few miles of separation between ships in range, and you account for their movement during Harpoon flight time you can isolate a certain target
@grimreapers
@grimreapers 2 года назад
I don't think it would work Tom, remember those ships are gonna be moving at 30knots and may turn. Bearing in mind that the time of flight of missiles is so long, I think you wouldn't risk doing that, as you may miss the fleet?? I suppose you are the expert here but I still think it's risky?

@@grimreapers I am skeptical that it would work on a battle group as well. Theoretically it could, but you would have to be dam lucky and know the precise movements of the group. 14:29 Gripen isn't stealth, but it *is* low visibility. Mix that with the electronic warfare systems and its capabilities are surprisingly good. In wargames in the US the Gripens are apparently able to get scarily close while remaining undetected according to one US fighter pilot. At least that's the case in reality, in this game? Who knows...

This is indeed a problem with plans. But let's assume this is how it played out. Next steps: Finland does not need to reinforce it's naval attack group and seems to have suffered no losses. So another strike can be launched. Swedens airgroup has been mauled but could be launced with anti ship missles. Danish group is entirely kia and is out of the fight. Since the planes are launched from Norway the Norwegians could put reserves in for another strike with minimum delay. Russian carrier group has expended a lot of missles, lost a cruiser, another damaged and it's entire airwing is gone. Withdrawing the carrier group is paramount So this in my opinion is a strategic Scandinavian victory

In a few weeks Finland will decide about its next main fighter. The options are F-35A, Super Hornet (with some Growlers thrown in the mix), JAS Gripen E, Rafale, and Eurofighter. I suspect it is going to be either F-35 or Gripen - Rafale and Eurofighter are unlikely imho, and Super Hornet is already an older platform. The amount of all planes should be in or around 64.
@Proximax9
@Proximax9 2 года назад
@@mrs7195 super hornet deal would come with other benefits tho. A lot of old legacy hornet stuff would directly translate to new platform plus they would get a growler on top of the deal. However gripen only has one engine, a feat which has saved a couple hornets in the past in our mishaps during excercises 😁

Concerning the Harpoon problem, 2 suggestions: Fire them in waves so that the first wave hits everything in the way, then give some time to sink and disappear, and then the second wave can go for whatever was behind. Second suggestion: Fire from different angles so that it will become less likely that all the Harpoons see the same scenery and go for the same ship.

Swedish airforce have a 200km range anti-ship missile that Gripen can carry, named RBS-15F ER. It is based on a quite old design that has been continually improved and upgraded over the years. Will be fully replaced in a few years by a the Mk. IV Gungnir with 300km range. With a 200km range it can launch at a much greater distance than the Penguin that only have a 35 or 55 km range. But at subsonic speeds it will need to attract air protection away from the carrier group and likely launch quite a few decoys. Updated since I heard you mentioning the Mk 4 towards the end. I think I would attack the outer edge ships in the blockade first, one by one. Two groups from each direction to force the Russians split their planes in two groups too. But only in a way where they first fly off in one direction and then have to double back when they spot the second group. Then send a fairly small group straight for Kuznetsov, just to tempt them to fire off their anti-aircraft missiles. Turn around as soon as possible to get out of range. Repeat until the air cover is forced to peel off from protecting the outer ships in the blockade. You don't fight this kind of battle in one attack unless you have an overwhelming advantage. You can only win if you can force your opponent to do something that will weaken his position, because then he will hesitate and start to make mistakes. It is up to you to make sure that of all the choices your opponent can make, none are good. They are all bad.

The censoring of the Counterweight Continent campaign was a load of old bollocks! This war game is pretty good though. You didn't get the carrier, but you denuded an airwing as well as a heap of the missile supply of the enemy fleet and took out a battlecruiser. Unless they have a couple of good re-supply ships on hand, that carrier group is going to have to withdraw to resupply, and the Russians don't have another carrier to rotate through to the blockade. So that group you'd think would move off to the Northwest roughly to get closer to replenishment, and you might want to see if you can do anything to interdict that. Then there would be whatever units are left for blockading duties, and their subs.

I’d of split the fighter sweep into 3 flights of Gripen’s to draw the Mig’s away and then attack the fleet from the south. Arm all the F16s with Penguins. Best way I can think of to target individual surface combatants is to fire off the Harpoons first to deplete the SAMs / CIWS and then send in the F16s with their Penguins to target individual ships. Gripens don’t need to win, they just need to drag the logs away so the carrier can be sunk by the F16s.

@kroniskaparanoia, Depends on your definition. If defining word Scandinavia by physiography/geography, then Scandinavia would be Norway/Sweden/Finland (last time i checked tiny part of Finnish lapland is located in the peninsula and hence part of the Scandinavian peninsula). By that definition I would rule out Denmark, because technically is located on the North European Plain instead of Scandinavian. If by definition of people and their language, then of course you are right.

@okaldhol

F-35 is taking over the NATO QRF for Norway in 22. Both the Penguin and the AIM-9M are legacy. Norway uses the IRIS-T, which is much more capable. Both the F-16 and the F-35 will carry the JSM, not the Penguin. The F-35 does so internally, which means remains stealthy. The NSM is the next generation Penguin, and the JSM is a further improvement. It is greatly improved, and the new JSM variant (Joint Strike Missile) has a range of over 300nm). The missile itself is stealthy, and uses random maneuvers in its terminal phase to make it harder for enemy countermeasures like CIWS. The JSM has an IIR-seeker (soon to be complemented by a radio-frequency seeker) and an onboard target database. It is able to detect, recognize and select targets independently.

The reason why they move to mig 29k: You deploy up to 36 mig 29k on Kuznetsov while only 18 su-33, because mig 29 is smaller. Russia plans to order more mig-29k when Kuznetsov will be ready. They actually removed its strike weapons making hangar bigger. Mig 29K also has lower RCS compared to su 33, because 20 % of its body is made of composites and radar absorbing materials. There is a mistake on the model of this aircraft: it can carry up to 9 missiles (1 under the belly and 4 under each wing). Yours had just 3 hardpoints under wings. Russia also installed new engines on Kuznetsov so it shoud not be smoky in its next sea mission.

From the little researching I've done, it seems as though the su-33 never quite lived up to its promise. It lost just about every export contract it bid for. I think you're right that the size has a lot to do with it. It's massive, as fighters go, and Russian carriers aren't all that big to begin with.
@andrewhomo2461
@andrewhomo2461 2 года назад
@@DanielWilliams-oi4ss Well, su 33 will still be used by Russian navy aviation, but not from aircraft carrier but from land base in the Northern fleet. I'm a fan of the Su-27 derivatives as a rule, and i think it makes a lot more sense to have the bigger planes if you're operating from a big airfield. It just seems like the 33s got kneecapped by the compromises needed to get them to operate from a carrier

I would think it is still very important to hit the carrier. It may not be a threat at this time but failing to take it out will allow it to return to base and get more aircraft and go back out. Not surprised with the assessment of the Gripen "lacking legs". Sweden makes some incredible aircraft...but projecting power is not part of their military doctrine. Unless the mindset has changed since I was there (and it's been three decades, so that's entirely possible), Sweden's military exists primarily to convince any would-be aggressor that occupying the country would be more trouble than it would be worth. Their planes have generally been intended to protect Swedish airspace, so attacking a target hundreds of miles beyond the Norwegian coast is not something they would plan for. Agreed with many others that this is, at best, a Pyrrhic victory for the Russian group.

The reasoning behind the change from Su-33 to Mig-29K is cost as to update the Su-33 to something near what the Mig-29K offers would be extremely expensive and the Mig-29K's capabilites have practically been paid for by the Indian Navy.
