I was able to fix the TATE mode sliders with a printed socket on the side of the case. The beige was a filament I have not been able to source more of yet so I couldn't reprint that for you. I have been thinking about how I could make it tilt easily, but it may require a major design change. Though thinking about a custom stand with a tilt mech might be possible, I'll see what I can come up with.

The custom stand could connect to the case through a peg of some sort, then instead of having the tate sliders you can have another of the same hole on the side so you would just attach the stand on it for tate mode.

Oooooh, if this tiny monitor had the weeCee build into it, we would have our 90's PC mini. The case of this monitor should have enough space to even allow some extensions to the weeCee like extra ports. The SOM304RD52PINE1 (seems to be what weeCee uses) is supposed to support PCI as system bus. I don't know if it is possible to break out a pci slot out, but if yes that would mean 3d acceleration could be added to weeCee too. Or instead with the MISTer built-in. How amazing that would be!

With the MiSTer it's a good idea to use vsync_adjust=2 for low lag over HDMI or else you'll end up with at least one frame of lag due to internal buffering. Also, I'm curious if the TimeSleuth and similar devices are able to test at different frame rates or if it's just 50 and 60 Hz, quite a few consoles danced around those values a bit and some arcade machines go way off those values.

Regarding lag, there’s a utility ROM out there called 240p Test Suite for the SNES that has a manual lag tester that works very well. The same person that made that, has made ROMs for multiple systems. That’s just the first one that came to mind. It also has a ton of other utilities built into it, especially for CRTs.

I've used those to test latency with the MiSTer on CRT via analog IO board and HDMI and check latency differences with different video settings. You can get very close to CRT over HDMI with vsync_adjust=2. Compatibility with different monitors and TVs was better than I anticipated.

Flat screen CRTs were very common in the early 2000s. Worked very well as a progressive scan standard with consoles like GameCube, OG Xbox and Dreamcast. Cool little LCD & enclosure. Glad to see you enjoying the start of your MiSTer adventure & looking forward to hearing your impressions of it after you've explored a bit! A couple things that might help you run the higher resolution there are turning on the DVI mode in the ini (if you can/are willing to connect it to external audio from the optical out- use a DAC with optical instead of the analog 3.5mm audio output for best audio quality) and also setting the framebuffer to automatic mode (fb_size=0 in the ini). This can make backgrounds in the main menu blurry, so to get around that you can make a [menu] section at the bottom of your ini with fb_size=1 under it, then the framebuffer will remain full-sized while in the main menu, but still be set to automatic (fb_size=0) when using a system/core.

Heh. Funny story. So i was working with a Taiwanese representative some time ago, just around the turn of the LCD (when they started becoming something a person can afford to buy) and one of the things he had in his office was CRT shells, with LCD screens inside them. I asked him "what's the purpose of this contraption" and his reply was somewhat along the lines of "people don't trust these 'newfangled' things so we're giving them something familiar but better instead". @@armorgeddon Sorry, I was describing that wrong. I was talking about how he couldn't reliably go to the display's full resolution. And I should have used the word Bandwidth, not quality. For the sidestand problem a better solution would be a grooved stand to hold it in position and some sort of a lock like tripods. Or something like a ratcheting groove but will have bad locking performance unless properly designed. The stand would be an easy thing...if only 3D printers can print out a quarter of a sphere without requiring all that support extrusions, you look at old CRT monitors and they usually had a spherical swivel to point the monitor up or down, but it uses the weight of the CRT itself for stability. So the ideal solution is a weighted stand *which can be easily switched over onto the side when needed* so it is a combo solution!

A cool improvement to this would be a semi-transparent LCD display that would be an overlay on top of the main display. The overlay would produce the scanlines and other CRT artifacts automatically scaled to the resolution of the main display. Almost like a hardware version of CRT Royale. If feasible, something like this could a solution for those who want the CRT experience without the CRT. Which could be a big hit among retro game enthusiasts.

I imagine you could just program whatever hardware is driving the screen to emulate that digitally, like the "CRT emulation" option in emulators like VICE.

@@stevethepocket Yes, that could work. But somehow, I would expect a more true to life result with a semi-transparent overlay. Specially in regards to things the color-bleed that exists with CRT displays. Perhaps that could be done with a single display. My only concern would be an increase in latency.

thanks for video. I wish I can find at least 20" LCD with 4x3 ratio for TATE mode for Mister.

It will need also a third speaker to get correct stereo effect for portrait mode (with a rear switch to change audio output between landscape and portrait)

It's probably not worth the bother, any speakers that fit in that case are going to sound like they fit in that case. External speakers are going to sound a whole lot better, and the monitor's rotation would become irrelevant.

That's a nifty case design. I'd absolutely pick up the parts to make one, if shipping wasn't so painful from the US to the UK (this isn't a problem with Laser Bear, it's a general problem). I wish it was possible to buy the STLs to print it myself, although I can see why they wouldn't want to sell them: you can stick commercial exploitation licences on things, but as a small business trying to enforce them is probably near impossible.

I wonder how the speakers they used compare to the speakers in the actual iPad they took the screen out of; I was pleasantly surprised when I got my first iPad and the sound quality was better than the desktop speakers I had at the time!

For sound, what about some of those 2.1 tv speakers? If all new parts, they have those small woofers from Pyle, and front speakers could be gotten at the same place. Stand wise, looking at those front covers from the defender case. Also small phone stands, those could be modified to be integrated into the bottom, while the sliders are modified to click locking them into place.

Would love this for screen resolution experimenting

I would use it as a little secondary display for my main setup for just monitoring temps and stuff. Have an ultrawide so that is about how much use it would get from me Lol.
