This is a short clip from an 8mm film of Scarborough 1971 which features the kid’s paddling pool at Scalby Mills. The film was lent to me by Maureen Murray. Maureen`s late husband - Pete - rescued this film and many others. I have digitally scanned the films and I am spending a lot of time cleaning up the films and making them available for everyone who loves Scarborough to see - particularly the members of our Facebook group - Scarborough Bottom End and Old Town. This short section has yet to be cleaned up - you cannot fail to notice the damaged that shows up as black steaks and marks. However, eventually these will be removed. This short section is about 2 minutes long and to clean up the film each frame has to be edited one at a time - 24 frames per second = 2,800 or so frames ! Each frame can take 2 - 5 mins to edit - something to keep me amused on rainy days :) Hope you enjoy the clip.

Brilliant memories. We visited the north bay every july from Glasgow between 1963 and 74. Stayed in Mr's Websters B & B on Scholes Park Road ? Am going back next Saturday for a few days on our way home from Cornwall.

Used to holiday at Colley’s Cosy camp in this area back in the 60s. It was very Hi-De-Hi, with a camp comic and his sidekick, who was regularly thrown into the pool. Seem to remember a mini train that took us kids down into Scarborough. A long time ago, but very happy memories.

We went to Colleys Cosy Camp around 1969. It was a wonderful holiday... Mum, Dad, my brother and I. Scarborough has always held a special place in my heart. Been back several times with my wife for day trips... It doesn't feel the same☹️ but I guess that was 52 years ago and a lot of the attractions I remember are now gone!

@@victuff9765 It isn`t going to feel the same from what it was 50 years ago - things change. If that camp was still there today no one would want to stay there. It was fine in it`s day but way below the standard that people now expect.

Miniature railway is still there and looks fantastic. These days it is run by a local family and they have done a brilliant job with it. It is open most of the year. When it was run by local council it would be closed around 8 months per year. Even at Christmas the little trains now run - Santa Specials. Brilliant the way those people have brought new life to that attraction.

This was a regular playground for my friends & i. There was no bridge or anythng there, just the hotel & Monkey island. A bit further up rhe beck was a large pipe suspended over the water high up , we used to straddle this to cross over sometimes. It had a steel guard at each end of the pipe but it didnt stop us.

Thanks for a really nostalgic look at a lovely part of Scarborough back when the town still had charm and was a great holiday destination. From the 90's onwards nearly all the good bits have gone and it's a shadow of the resort it once was thanks to the vandalism and neglect of Scarborough Council.

Sorry but you are wrong - Scarborough is a great place and there is an awful lot going for it. It`s very negative to pin the blame on elected Councils for everything that happens in the town - we live in a changing world nothing stays the same.

@jeffallinson8089 Год назад
@@stevemessruther172 Your right, nothing stays the same but everything negative I have seen happen to Scarborough since I lived there in the 80's has been directly linked to the council. Not me having a go at them but facts.

@@jeffallinson8089 You lived here in the 80s - I have lived here for 68 years and I am well aware of what decisions were made with the various councils. Time and time again I see people whinging about the town and most of them - like you - havn`t lived here for years. I`m sure that a lot of folk walk around with their eyes closed. You can`t make an honest comment on the town if you are not living here everyday - it was 40 years ago when you iived here.

Thanks we used to Holiday at Scalby Mills every year in the 70s. I nearly drowned in the pool as a toddler too - fun fact. BTW what is over the bridge that everyone is swarming up the steps for? I was never allowed any further than the bridge, though once or twice I slipped past for an explore with my dog, and came across an underground bunker type structure.

When you go over the bridge you are then on the Cleveland Way. You can walk along the top of the cliff for miles. The 1st bay you come to is Jacksons bay and the next is Burniston Bay. Back in the 1900s the army had a rifle range with the `targets` on the cliff side - opposite the scalby mills pub. It is all over grown now. When we were kids we would explore the old building and it was bit scary cos you had to climb down inside the building - it is about 20 feet below ground level. To hoist the targets up there were hooks and pullys suspended above the roof line. We - being kids - didn`t know what they were for so we assumed that the hooks were for hanging German spies!

Loved that slide as a kid, and Scalby end. It looks really boring now.
@stevemessruther172

@@Stratoszero Depends what you want to do. The big slide was actually the only decent thing as far as amusements went. The Sealife centre is very popular and has outlasted every other attraction that was on the site. The Old Scalby Mills pub is a great place to have a drink and something to eat while enjoying the fantastic views. The `Corner Cafe` area is thriving with new shops and places to eat - always very busy every weekend all year long. "It looks pretty boring now" - when was the last time you went there? The big slide went in 1990. - 33 years ago!

@@stevemessruther172 Last went 1990 with my misses when we first met and were skint and looking for a dirty weekend. I was saddened by the decline that most UK coastal resorts have suffered. I recall the area being full of chalets in my childhood but it looks a bit desolate on Streetview now. As with many places they still feel familiar until you add up how many years its been since you were there.

Hi Steve. I used to go to northstead school with Jill Mesruther , is she related ?
@stevemessruther172
@stevemessruther172 2 года назад
I don`t know Jill myself but every Messruther is related. I have been working on the family tree and found that Messruther stems right back to 1740 and is only found in Scarborough. Every Messruther worldwide can be traced back to Mary and William (1740). Over the years some have gone to Australia, Canada and USA but they all stem from Scarborough.
