In this video I reveal what is possibly the most common and damaging mistake that most adult beginner inline skaters make when learning to skate.
Leaning forwards to ensure you don't fall over backwards seems like a logical thing to do and yet this is precisely the stance that creates foot pains, lower back ache and tense, uncomfortable looking skating that is more likely to cause a fall.
Leaning forwards almost always is accompanied by the butt going out beyond the heels and this places your weight in the back half of the skate. This is what creates the foot pains & cramps that many new skaters experience as their toes are "gripping" and tense trying to maintain balance with the weight near the heels.
With the correct upright body position the weight falls into the front half of the feet so no gripping is necessary and the foot pains disappear. Your feet should not hurt when you skate. If they do it's a clear sign you are making this mistake.

I'm dealing with low back pain after learning inline skate for 4 months. And I think this video just explains the reason. I'm so scared of letting the center of gravity fall on the back wheels which results in bending my waist and the back pain becomes incurable. I will try to bend my knees more and avoid leaning forward. Thank you for the tips!

Thank you for this very useful and informative skating technique and safety. Fear of falling and hurting is the number one reason why people shy away from the sport, especially among the adults in their 30s and older.

Yes you are right. Skating is seen as "very dangerous" by most non-skaters and fear of injury is the Ian reason why more people don't start skating. Injury and frustration are also the reasons why so many give up skating. I'm hoping to change that and educate people in what they can do to decrease the risks and increase the enjoyment.

Sometimes an image explains a lot of theory very clearly. This is what my eyes do every time I look at a student. I can see exactly where their weight is on their skate (heels or front half) and often I know this before they are aware of it. This is useful to be able to assess your own skating videos.

Glad I found channel. Loved rollerblading as a kid/teen and thought it'd be a good way to be active as an adult. Much more nerve wracking this time around 😅I fell backwards last year and bruised my tailbone. Ouch! A year later and I brave enough to try again lol. Thank you for the tips!

The biggest beginner's mistake is to resist the fall that is in progress or (for very beginners) on a verge of commence. That leads to even harsher fall with some injuries imposed during failed correction. Wear protection, do landing on protection drills, use acquired skills to turn fall into controlled landing. When tilting backwards, squat immediately, and with center of gravity lowered, turn and land on protection for example. Don't try to fly it out. If you can fly, you don't need skating anyway.

Yes, if you feel yourself starting to fall try to reach your arms and hands FORWARDS to encourage falling onto your knees and hands and protective gear. Sideways and backwards falls are always worse.
