Everyone always ask me aren’t you afraid out in the woods by yourself I tell them no cause crazy doesn’t walk that far. I’m in my 60’s, a short woman and have never felt threatened while on a trail or out camping in the wilderness

Great advice, I did my first wild camping trip last March but haven’t been on my own since, I suffer with chronic anxiety and really struggle to cope. I managed to get through the night but it wasn’t what I had expected, RU-vid channels tend to romanticise it, but the reality is never the same as the fantasy. I know this sounds negative, but I’m still learning and wanting to get out there again. My first wild camp film is on our channel.

On my first trip wild camping I woke up in the night and I thought someone was trying to open the door to my tent. I was petrified and just stared at the doorway... ...then I heard a neigh. I shone my torch outside and sure enough there were a few Dartmoor Ponies nosing around.

My first camp was at Shelstone tor and from then on twice a month Ive been going solo all over Dartmoor ! I'm currently out now snug in my tent , wind rain today¡ And after having to bail on 3 attempts it's nice to be out, everyone I see asks If I get scared, well no but I try and plan ahead! However the people you meet are mostly in awe and could never imagine doing that but it's an incredible experience and personal one for many reasons . You learn as you go and I don't like cows ! But I'm planning some longer hikes over a couple of days and you get to learn the tors , the landscape and terrain which each time you go out you get better at navigation and being on your own. It's addictive.

I did my first solo wild camp towards the end of last summer and spent nearly every penny of overtime on better equipment. Warmer, lighter. I've done 2 wild camps this year. This has been aided in no small part by Summit or Nothing videos. Fantastic tips and equipment testing has helped refine my equipment selection at times. Thank you to all who have built a fantastic channel.

Great channel ,great tips , and I would add go to quiet camp sites and get used to the nighttime noises a couple of times .As a woman, people always say, "Aren't you scared of crazy people," and I say I am the crazy person. 🤣I feel safer in the middle of nowhere than in a town or city .given a 👍and subscribed. I personally have a concern that really bothers me: secure parking. While I was living in Exeter I enjoyed both Dartmoor & Exmoor NP very much, but I have also witnessed many times motorcycle/bicycle got stolen and cars broken in/vandalised. It may sound strange but this is the main issue that puts me off from overnight wild camping. I know this is no one's responsibility but I would really love to see some sort of secured parking facility set up by NP. I would be happy to book in advance and pay in exchange for peace of mind.

Some great tips there Trev. 👍 I put off wild camping for a long time as i had no one to go with and did want to go alone. I finally pushed myself to go, staying at great mis tor, and while on my first i night was full of anxiety, I've never looked back. Absolutely love it now. The more remote the better!

What a comforting video you made. Thanks. Yes, it`ts all in your head, as you said. I like to do long distance bicykling with wildcamping in Europe. The most aggressive animals I`ve met, is dogs chasing the bike. They can be quite frightening. Especially in eastern europe when they guard the farms. At night I feel safe though. Often without my tent, fall asleep looking up to an amazing dark star heaven.. Thanks again.

I get all you say trev. I have never felt unsecured camping like you say the only people I see are other hikers out in the sticks. I've Been woken up by the odd sheep nosing for food or something but apart from that a train could pass by and I would normally sleep straight through lol.

I would suggest for a 1st time wildcamper to maybe try a 'Nearly Wild Campsite' or maybe camp on some land that they maybe able to get permission to be there. Camping with a friend first would defo calm the nerves and build up some courage 😎👍

This, a fair amount of the farm sites I've pitched on haven't been far off wildcamping. One spot from last year springs immediately to mind, lovely spot, beautiful views, lovely owner, shower and toilet out of The Hills Have Eyes.

Great tips Trev. If I were to add advise, I would say, Just go. For your first wildcamp just aim for 1 night, go in the summer and dont try anything too extreme. Go somewhere quite near to where you can park your car, don't take "extras", leave it in the car, you dont need spare clothes etc, you can change when you are back at your car. If you are doing it right nobody will know you are there and you probably wont see anyone anyway. Also don't worry about it being perfect, it probably won't be, but you will still love it.

These past couple of years I have struggled with anxiety and stress and even now before I set out for a camp I struggle with it. Great video Trev, and I had to smile when you said collecting the gear is as much fun as the camping itself. I couldn't agree more. The wife thinks I'm off my head when i get excited about a new stove, backpack, sleep mat or even a repalcement gas cannister🤣. I don't know why but it just gives me a massive lift. Great advice as well, the first question everyone asks when you say you going wild camping alone, "are you not scared?" I asked a friend, "scared of what", her answer.... "Wild Bears... Or Wolves"..😯 In Lancashire ??? 😄Keep the videos coming, great stuff.

Great video Trev… lotsa awesome tips and information for the first timers ….. my first solo trip was a 3 mile hike to a State campground ( organized campground) it was great for a gear shakedown for what did and didn’t work …. Then when I did my first solo backpack trip I was ready …. Of course I dialed in my gear from there to lighten up my load . We are lucky here in the states where’s there are so many state and country park campgrounds …. Not truly wild … more rustic 😂 but you still get to experience the great outdoors 👍👍

I was 8 for my first camp in my grannies garden. I was 14 for my first solo. In a £5 second hand campari silver blue tent. I had it for years till it rotted at the stitching. Im now in my 50s and still camping. Ive had foxes sheep deer cows goats rats and mice visit me.. The worst to visit are humans when you want alone time. I have various encounters with gillies and land owners. I have had a few start hostile but they left happy that ide be gone just after first light. Pompous git demanded my name and address which I gave and said ide take pictures of the area when packed to prove no mess. He arrived on his quad the back of 7 as I was finishing my breakfast. He apologised for his manor. He was trying to catch low life scum who used that spot for all sorts. I was passing by a farm and stopped to let the tractor by> I flagged him to stop and asked if I could pitch in the corner of a field as it was early evening and there was nowhere for miles that was any good and it was torrential rain. After a short chat he offered me a shed to stay and dry my gear. It had power too. I got given a plate of mince and taties Man that hit the spot. He said there was going to be lorries of hay coming in the early morn he was going to offload to store.. I asked if he wanted a hand He laughed and asked if I could drive a telehandler to which I said yes I can lol. After a quick shot to prove I was up at 6.30 for breakfast that would have done nearly three people we were ready to fill the shed. The dinner was Irish stew and I struggled to eat it all. He gave cash for the days work. Its nice to be nice and you never know how far it might get you.

Loving your content! I camped as a child with my dad and brothers and always wanted to do it as an adult, I sacked off the idea though due to not being a driver and thinking small light backpacking gear would be too expensive. Your videos inspired me to look in to it further and I was pleasantly surprised as to how affordable it could be. I purchased a cloud up 1 tent a couple of weeks ago, this week I picked up a forclaz mt900 up rucksack, both coming in together at just under a very respectable 3kg. Just need to get my sleeping gear together, cook-set and all the other little bits, I already have a few useful things and I have clothing as I'm an outdoors person any way, I'm a cyclist too. I can't wait to get out for my first solo wild camp, and just wanted to let you know that your videos have been massively inspirational for me. I'm in north London area at the moment and have plenty of countryside near by, whenever I am out on my mountain bike I'm scoping out spots that are inconspicuous enough to camp. 😂 This summer or maybe next, me and my family hope to move down to Devon in the Exeter area, I am so looking forward to doing some wild solo camps on Dartmoor, I can't wait. Loving the content, keep it up. 👌🏻

Great tips Trev. I’m still yet to do an over nighter. Done a few local hikes and the first Dartmoor peaceful protect in December. Now the weather is finally getting better and my working hours have become more sociable I may actually get out. Love the T shirt. I have a similar one with amity island dive school.

Really good advice. I remember my first solo wild camp, my car was near by for the ‘just in case I need to bail’. But it went really well. It is tougher in winter, but not impossible. Also, nearly wild campsites are a good alternative or a stepping stone. Thanks Trev, cool vid 😊

Tip 12: watch this video!😊 I've been watching lots of videos about wild camping, reviews on gear and I started collecting! Tried out camping in nature camp (1 hour on bike from my home) with my kids, and also alone. Now going for 3 day hike with like minded people and a guide in nature reserve The Veluwe in the Netherlands (getting a course, tips, extra info on map reading, wild tracks etc) My goal: Dartmoor, Scotland and Norway and maybe Iceland! 46 years old now....was time to "take the plunge"😊 Btw; wild camping is strictly forbidden in the Netherlands. And stealth camping is out of my comfort zone.... for now😉

Perhaps there should be a post where people can chat and if they feel comfortable go out together..... Safety in numbers until you are confident to go out on your own..... I'm no pedo but I took a friend's son out camping and he had the best weekend ever...... No screen, just bushcraft and the outdoors..... Great channel by the way. Keep it up

I've definitely been stuck in the Tip #3 stage for some time. Check the weather before hand is a great tip! My last trip a month ago, day after Christmas, I was in a windstorm with gusts up to 70+ near Seaside Oregon. There were trees and limbs falling, but I felt fairly safe with my tent next to the base of an old growth Sitka Spruce (it had survived many storms right next to the ocean). If I had checked the weather first, I would have cancelled that trip for safety reasons ha.

@@SummitOrNothing I hiked 5 miles from the car there was no going back, just prayed that no trees would fall on me. The wind was crazy loud, cracking trees, torrential rain (dug a trench around the tent). it was FUN hahaha (Tillamook Head Trail from Seaside to Hikers Camp)

I recall one trip many years ago in Switzerland when I was woken by a noise on the fly sheet. Plop Slide plop slide. Wtf is it. Went out side and saw a frog leaping up the tent before sliding down. Scared the life from me for a mo. I Went away last year and awoke at 3am to some bloodcurdling screaming. Proper shat me pants. Turned out it was just a fox. Then as I was just dropping back off I heard a screeching owl right above my head.

I went about 3 years ago on Great Mis Tor on Dartmoor. The worse thing was worrying about my car. There are lots of places on Dartmoor I would like to wild camp but worrying about my car puts me off. It doesn't help when everyone you speak to says the same about the car.

Yeah a lot of people do worry about l3aving their vehichles. I've never had any trouble with car myself (touch wood), but have always bought a run down / run around car to be honest, and never been too precious. Someone asked me recently to do a video on which car parks to use, but I was thinking, a youtube search for by the wrong people, they may give the wrong ideas to those with light fingers to go looking.

Great pointers Trev. I'm not new to wild camping but never in the winter, except as a cadet when we got kicked out of a 3 tonner in freezing fucking conditions at some military airfield (Coates I think) with nothing but a sleeping bag and a bright orange plastic sheet to survive the weekend🤣anyway I've spent a fortune on gear lately especially for winter camps, so have no choice but to get out there and use it. Hi Trev, I think having cows etc around you when you camp is a great comforting natural alarm system. If anyone comes close they will move off in a hurry. Although sheep can be really annoying because they don't shut up.... ever. Which 2 man tent would you recommend? I'm in the market for one but not sure which one to go for. I don't want a single skinned one though. Peace

Never gave it a second thought just totally natural up on the moor....but can't do forests even hate walking through them, horrible places.

I'm not keen on camping in forests either. First time I ever went camping in a wood, a muntjac screamed and scared me half to death! All I could think of was Blair Witch! 😄I prefer huge mountainous landscapes, beaches, and lochs.

That's funny, all we have is forests in my area (northwestern Oregon). I'd love to camp in some grassy open area with views like the moors. Had a bear circling my camp last summer, I've held off on cooking steak deep in the woods since then LOL

If you shoot a continuous 15 minute video on your GoPro is it in split into 2 or 3ish files on the sd card? Or do you “combine/merge them in GoPro app? If I’m not explaining it properly no worry’s.

@@Old-Sole yes it is, mate. This vid was actually 2 or 3 vids from one continuous shoot, but you just find the split and put a cut in or drop some b-reel over the top.

I only ever solo camp. Most of my friends would rather slam their heads in a car door than go hiking and camping. Personally, I feel safer in in very remote areas.

Hi Trev. Great advice, for those a bit worried about it all. I personally think that the older generation don’t have too much of a problem with ‘wild Camping’, as they call it now, as most people when they were kids, were often told to ‘get out from under their parents feet’, which they often did. I was a late ‘60’s kid, that often went off down the local woods and stayed out all night. No batteries, internet, phones, just an imagination and a will to live! Probably harder for people to go out now, as too many people to listen to on the internet about what can go wrong. Just get out and do it, and if you live to tell the tell, then even better!🤣😉 All the best.👍🏾🇬🇧🏕
