Today I was hired by an old Australian buddy named Ross.
He went on the 1985 Ill Repute Scared Straight tour, but first:
Him and his friend Conn saved up a bunch of money to go the United States to drive all over the place and visit all of the cities that had punk rock scenes.
They both got my address, my parents house actually, from an issue of Maximum Rock N Roll. Because I wrote a scene report or two.
Then they showed up at my parents house and knocked on the front door. I answered the door and they introduced themselves to me and asked if there were any shows that night. In Simi Valley. In 1985.
I said no but come on in!
My Mom cooked them dinner, they were very nice. My Mom couldn’t believe that they just showed up as total strangers and it was somehow okay.
They stayed at Scott Radinsky’s house and the band practiced for them and they taped our set from our freind Robb Demko’s crappy tape player. They slammed danced in the other room while we played.
Eventually Conn went back to Australia, but Ross stayed here and had a crappy station wagon that we were going to use for the upcoming tour.
We nicknamed him Skippy for reasons I don’t recall.
Today Ross wrote me an e mail after thirty years and hired me to do a poster in honor of that recording, and here it is!
I don’t remember some of these songs at all, but we played twenty of them ha ha. I am really proud that we had three songs that had titles like “Confusion”, “Rejection” AND “Oppression”. If that isn’t eighties suburban boredom inspired hardcore punk rock, I don’t know what is.
Cheers!
