After a painful divorce, my mantra was, "I trust an unknown future to a known God." I let go of control and rolled with life, and was subsequently blessed with a healthy marriage. It's been 38 years. Also, I vowed to get better, not bitter.

My husband can't sit anywhere without being able to see people! His back has to face a window or wall. He also has PTSD from the Iraqi war right after 9/11. I was almost kidnapped as a teen. I was always vigilant growing up and the one time I let my guard down that happened. We have 3 kids and I find myself always telling my kids "lock the doors. Stay with mommy. Watch your surroundings. Don't go outside with me watching you. Etc." I'm also a nurse. My husband was a firefighter/paramedic for the city of Houston so he saw some awful things too. So he tells the kids things too. We talk about what happens if certain situations or injuries happen, etc. This was a great call because it's something I never thought about. I want them to be vigilant, knowledgeable about certain situations but not fearful of the world.

I feel so sorry for all who are trapped in Porn: kids, men and women. I had a hard time growing up with what was available then, and I can't imagine how deep the struggle is for people now! I am so thankful and proud for the young man who called in and his bravery in seeking help! He can do this with support and counseling. Thank you Dr. John for orividing a safe place to talk about the deep hard issues of life that the church and society refuses to discuss or to discuss with hope and healing and acceptance! I have felt since I was a kid that there needs to be this open and honest conversation with love support and reality with tools and how to steps to find the way out!

Having a relationship with someone who is a narcissist is impossible and it is dangerous. They convince their victim that the victim is to blame for the twisted mental cruelty done to them by the perpetuator.

You were fooled by the cutesie little girl voice as was John. He is a sucker for that I've noticed. This woman is a secret control freak and deep down she actually loves the amount of control she has in this situation. People really need to use more discernment and read between the lines.

What makes porn especially addicting is that it makes the brain into its own drug manufacture, supplier, dealer, and customer. The book "The Porn Guru" by Harper Daniels I thought did a good job explaining how dumb porn is, and how to overcome it. There's no benefit to it.

The third caller...as a parent I would question the depth of the girls attachment to the son. She was running away from her parents. I question how long the marriage will last on her end. It's Not an idealized romance novel.

I was stationed where her son is. Marines elope a lot in that area. It’s the only way they can live outside the barracks. 😂

So you're saying her son is running away from barracks, just like DIL is running from parents? I don't find this too surprising when rents are so high, heck just general cost of living, it makes sense to consider marriage if both bring in income to cover mutual bills.

How do you get married without going on dates with various people? How do you figure out who you are compatible with? I’ve known people who married people because they were from the same culture but didn’t really know each other. The spouses ended up hiding serious things and the marriage don’t work out.

Lots of people break up who date and live together for years. Having direct clear conversations are better than dating forever with no end goal.

I think it depends on the context. There is a difference in going out to truly get to know people and today’s current “hook-up” culture/casual dating that leads nowhere. I didn’t have to date multiple guys to know my husband and I were compatible. We were attracted to each other, shared the same values and goals for the future, and were able to communicate well. We knew fairly quickly that we didn’t want to get to know anyone else and have been together 16 years now. I think the main issue is people don’t know how to truly communicate and discuss the important topics that will contribute to a strong relationship. Healthy relationships haven’t been modeled for them and they just jump from person to person and unhealthy relationship to unhealthy relationship trying to find fulfillment/“the one” when that isn’t how building a lasting relationship works.

My parents wanted me to date more people. It was weird to me. I had 2 “boyfriends” in high school and the first serious boyfriend I had at 18 I knew was it. He had dated more and we both had long, specific but realistic lists of what we were looking for. We’ve had a great 16 years so far.

That’s good that you both had luck. The reason I think it’s better to date people and get to know them is that not everyone is honest. I know several people who married people that were from the same culture but did not know each other well. Their partners hid serious issues. They would not have married them if they knew of these issues ahead.of time. They probably would have found out if they took time to really get to know each other.

The mom in the last call is so delusional. First, totally awful that her son eloped behind her back. Shes prayed his whole life for his furtue spouse and he goes and does that? Yikes. Says A LOT. Second, that girl is probably a victim of narcissistic abuse but even still, how would you feel if your daughter eloped behind your back? And how would you feel if you were those parents. They must be grieving. The girl probably was raised in a dysfunctional home and she wont be able to be the wife and mother she wants to be until she gets therapy and heals from this. Her mom in law cannot replace her real mom. She needs to grieve that relationship not try to replace it. So my point is i hope this woman is ready for some big drama.

With all the black market sex trafficking that has been happening, This kid could get charged as a sex offender if he talks to underage girls without knowing, cuz all these cam girls lie about everything in order to make money, whether someone else forces them or they do it voluntarily. I hope he gets the help he needs, cuz when someone admits that they have an addiction problem is cuz they’re deep into and desperate for help. I love how he shames the last woman for being a "helicopter parent" yet the first caller was 15 when he started using cam girls. Yet the last caller should have let her kids "date" without serious intentions of longevity, but also a married 19 year old is a "child." Get it together, dude.

@@sometimesising1016There’s a difference between helicopter parents who still control every moment of the child’s life even when they’re an adult and somebody who keeps an eye on their 15 and 16 year old. You can be attentive without being a helicopter parent. I know because my parents were by no means “helicopter parents” but they did monitor my phone usage!
