When a massive star, much more massive than our sun comes towards the end of its life, it explodes and collapses into itself. This implosion causes the star contract in size , but the mass remains the same. Hence it becomes a region in space, rather than a object with infinte gravity. Like; try to imagine our Earth being compressed to the size of a snooker ball.
