I don't even know how I discovered Austen's page. I have zero interest in the military/navy. Yet I'm here because I think his content is interesting. I watched one video and subscribed right away. For once, the RU-vid algorithm actually did something right.

Keep copies of all your medical documentation. It will help you greatly with the Veterans Administration when you get out. Nobody will tell you this while you're still on active duty BUT the burden of proof necessary for VA benefits is absolutely unbelievable. Copy everything, scan it and save it to a 65 gig thumb drive. Twenty or thirty years from now you will be glad you did.

Just wanna say that I can relate to the story. My brother ended up getting MRSA from work and waited to long to receive medical attention, and by the time he had it was too late and his MRSA ended up becoming advanced CRE. The IV antibiotics didn't work either, and he ended up passing due to his body shutting down and the severity of the infection having infected his whole body. I happened upon this video, but honestly glad that I did. You probably get this a lot, but thanks for telling this story and also for your service as well as honesty. God bless and God speed.

Advice to future recruits, don’t pop your knee pimples lol. In boot camp the guy to the left of me had swine flu and the one on the right had pneumonia. I had a strong immune system but still got pink eye from them making us hand out everyone’s shit stained underwear.

I almost had my head caved in working a jet once. It was awesome. The "bullet" on an F-15 is about 3' long, only weighs like 25lbs, and looks like a bullet. However, it's at the top of the vert, basically the highest point on the jet. Some dipshit dropped it from the high point and I was below it. It hit my elbow, which was about 6" from my head at the time. After it hit me, it put a hole in the concrete. Somehow it didn't break my arm, but the ER couldn't stop the bleeding. Two torniquets and four hours later, I was somewhat good. My uniform was covered in blood. Worst part about it was it happened at the end of shift on a Friday, and I was going TDY the next week. I told them if it wasn't broken that I'm good, and I would deal with it because I was not missing that TDY! Haha.

Because I'm a nurse with over 30 years of experience and have had MRSA, your story both horrified and angered me. I have heard of too many people in this exact spot, whether military or not, that ignored the symptoms of an infection due to various reasons. I get it, I was military also and wanted so much to graduate boot camp (Army). I also had problems with pneumonia during boot camp and was scared that I wouldn't graduate. But back to the reason for my post. MRSA and/or various types of staph infections are no joke. We had people coming back from Afghanistan with MRSA. When they first got to the hospital, they were put into isolation and stayed there until they got cleared and had crazy amounts of IV antibiotics. Some did lose limbs because of it and we nurses tried really hard not to get them to that point. So people really need to look out for staph infections and try to prevent them by going to get things checked out before they get to the point of almost losing a leg (Austen). Really, though, I'm glad you made it out okay. And from your other videos, you really try and take care of yourself and educate people on healthy routines and diets. You've come a long way since this video and I commend you for doing them. Take care.

The SAME thing almost happened to me. I almost lost my leg from mrsa when I was a freshman. I was in algebra after day of ignoring severe pain in my right knee - and I go to get up to turn a paper in, and I couldn’t walk. I automatically burst into tears and rolled my pant leg up and freaked out when I saw how swollen it was. I ended up going to my family doctor and he tried numbing my leg before lancing it but the infection was so deep in my knee, the numbing wouldn’t work. So I felt every single cut he made and scraping the inside of my knee to get the infection out. The doctor told me he would’ve had to amputate my leg from the knee down if I would’ve waited even one more day to come in. Scary stuff for sure. Oh and he said I probably got it from band camp. I guess I nicked my leg shaving and then going to camp around nasty sweaty kids made me get it is what he told me lol

It could have been flesh-eating disease. OR, if it got past your lymph nodes it could have turned into sepsis. You could easily have lost your leg or life. I met a guy, a fellow civilian, who lost a foot. Damn, if you'd seen a doctor the next day, when it got red around the area of the pimple you popped, you'd have had maybe 10 days. This time Navy damn near lost a great sailor, but now many sailors weren't that lucky. They need improved procedures/communications so someone in boot camp is not going to fear being put back to the next class for something really minor, like needing antibiotics. This isn't something particular to being in the military, it happens in the civilian world too. And especially men, especially young men, men hesitate to go to the doctor. And that happens even up here in Canada where we have universal medicare for all, and the doctors are "free" (taxpayer paid).

Nov 77 I had the pleasure of joining Uncle Sam's Yacht Club. I too, went to Great Lakes. During Service week, 2 days in I had got sick to my stomach. I didn't dare tell anyone for the reason as you said I didn't want to get set back. Anyway, the sickness would not go away. A Chief one morning told me I looked like a ghost and I broke down and told him I have been sick for a couple of days. He directed me to Sick call. It turned out I has Rubella German Measles. The doc said it was a allergic reaction from one of my shots I had received. After a week in the hospital, I w as s able to return to my Company. The training instructor told me if I could study all the lessons they had taken that week and pass the test, i would not get set back. So, at night a group of my fellow boots got together and tutored me and i passed. It goes to show you how working together in Bootcamp really paid off BIG TIME for me. I enjoy your videos. I was station on the Amphib Base in Coronado Ca. Seabees. ACB1

MRSA was the first thing I thought of somewhere between "I popped it" and (the first) "2 or 3 days later..." It's some super serious 💩, man. I'm glad you came out on the right side of it. I had MRSA once about a decade or so ago. It was on my left side just below and behind my hip bone... and inline with my beltline/where my pants rested. And... much like yours...what started as a pimple-like bump was exacerbated, ultimately resulting in a large chunk of me being cut out, ckear down to the muscle....

I remember when I was being checked out by the doc, she was smoking hot and she was handling my junk, then she would bring in her colleges who all happened to be women for a second opinion. A pretty weird experience...until they poked at one of the lymph nodesand I nearly passed out from the pain.

@@thegreatdogzilla5855 I have been out in the field for 30 days without a shower, however, I always had bars of soap and washcloths and would do my best to keep myself clean. If I was advising any young people who are thinking about joining the military the first thing I would say is STAY AWAY from combat arms. I know, people think it is badass and want to do all that cool stuff. I went to Airborne school, Air Assault school, got my expert INfantry badge and all it got me was a broken back, two bad knees. The infantry will use you up and spit you out when it has no further use for you. If you want to join the military get a good job like an MRI technician, a job that you can use when you get out. MRI techs are making 80k. Use the military to help you later in life, don't let the military use you.
