SCARIFY and AERATE in November? YES You CAN but...

Yes, I scarified and aerated this lawn IN NOVEMBER! Am I crazy? Maybe.. maybe not! From experience, I know this is perfectly acceptable.. "this year".. under "these" specific circumstances.
Watch the video to the end as I explain why I'm doing this, and how I am able to.
This customer is striving for the perfect lawn. In the past few years, we have simply offered our treatment service which faired well, but the lawn was producing a lot of thatch. This led to a weaker lawn and a lawn that holds moisture. This ultimately led to higher rates of lawn disease.
This year we have gone all out. We have scarified 2 or 3 times. We have aerated once or twice. We have applied fungicides, and additionally, my Emerald Green to help it thrive in Summer (lawnright.co.uk/emerald-green/)

Very interesting, would be very interested to see the results later. I do agree, autumn is definitely getting mild. Over more recent years I've been doing regular cuts on lawns later and later in the year. You're definitely a braver man that I to do scarifying at this time of year, but I totally agree, in this changing climate/temperature we need to re think things. Great video, thanks

Hiya, just found your channel. I have a tip for collecting waste into a bin liner bag. Buy a black plastic bin, cut the bottom off and slide the bin liner over the outside. This will hold the bag open while you use the grabbers instead of hands and knees. Just slide the bin out of the bag when you're done and repeat. Great channel mate.

Thanks for the 'brave' video, it is the warmest November ever so no one's written the rule book. The ground is much wetter though not just from all the rain but colder weather means the rain doesn't evaporate as quick. I want to scarify &/or verticut - might try a gentle scarify on a small area to begin with- just had to cut it - thanks again for another great video

Great content pal! I wish I could do a scarification now but my lawn is clay and waterlogged so no chance for me. I do still cut it when possible but it does thin out a bit cuz of the water and lack of light. Agree with you totally on temps and every garden is difficult so no text book is 100% right. Great channel.

I did mine 16th September a hard scarify like I do most years, no overseed this year and just a decided to fork aeration as a pose to core aeration and no top dress took nearly 10 weeks to sort itself out with some iron and autumn feed on there every 4 weeks. I went out yesterday and saw the neighbours doing theirs I did think it was a little late myself. I still mow all year when weather permits just to nip the tops off to level it over

I also try things out of the ordinary with climate change , but I do so first on my lawn. Many of my customers are elderly, whilst I know the lawn will recover and they will trust my judgement. I'm not sure many of them would survive the shock of the initial look. Lol. I also compost all my grass clippings and moss for my allotment, I have four 2cub.meter bins and turn it four times before using it. Best compost ever, plus I have two `cold' frames built along the back of the two fresh, hot bins which keep my summer bedding plants flowering all winter. A little more work but means when it comes to being green and recycling, I walk the walk and get good veg. Enjoyed the video coming just as I had tried scarifying my own lawn on the weekend just to `try and see' if it was feasible. My opinion it was too wet here pulling out a little to much grass even on light setting, but it was worth trying and I already knew what to expect, but right now it wouldn't win any awards. Lol

Thanks Shaun Really helpful to hear your insight and grateful for your expertise. Towards the end of the video, you talk about seed. Would you (weather dependent) advocate seeding too at this time of year? I was tempted to overseed an area underneath a tree. But the leaves keep falling, and Although I clear them regularly, I still wonder about new seed this side of autumn. Grateful for your thoughts. Many thanks
@LawnRight
@LawnRight Год назад
Hi Kamal.. I think anything's got a chance in the mild conditions at the minute..but as you say theres leaves to keep getting off especially with seed.. additionally, if for example you can guarantee a good 4 weeks from today of fair temps and sunlight to that area it stands a good chance or coming through.. but some will inevitably die back again due to lack of sunlight.. sadly.. but that's the battle with shaded areas

On the line but hopefully these decent temps should still be around for a couple more weeks so should see some decent recovery plus a gradual improvement over winter on the odd decent days (we do get1 or 2) main thing I guess is to try and minimise going on it

Thanks Shaun for another very informative video. Can farming fertiliser be used in spring or is it too strong for domestic use? My garden is around 3,000 sq M and is expensive when it comes to seeding and fertilising any tips to keep costs down would be appreciated.
@LawnRight
@LawnRight Год назад
Hi.. I'm not sure.. but some farmers do grow grass, especially for lambs and cows so technically yes.. I'd want to view the label to check application rates though first.. you can often buy larger 20kg bags of fertiliser which would do around 800 sq metres so youd need 4 at a time in a push spreader.. cost around £120 for the fertiliser. One thing you could do is just treat an area close to your property say 500 sq metres and let the rest do it's own thing

Question for anyone with any info, links or knowledge on the subject. My October and early November temperature were more like an April average. However, if it were April, my grass would be starting to go nuts but is only now growing slowly. I understand the temperature aspects of growth, but below what point do reduced light levels start to seriously restrict growth ?? PS, 1st Nov I got the scarifier out to do the lawn then "bottled it"..........Great Video.........Thanks.....
@LawnRight

Hi Tessa grass needs at least 3 hours of direct sunlight a day to do fairly well..once this lessens it then slows and weakens

Great video. I was mowing today in the midlands. Did you pit any feed on and/or moss control after? I probably saw you at Wyboston 3years ago. Isn't it 10° ideally for seed to germinate? Have a look at my odd Vids on here 😊. - i have a same job Wednesday, but its not been done recently and its looking wet! As i missed it last week. All the best. Have a great Autumn and winter in lawncare..

Quality info Shaun, I’ve been saying for the last few years we really haven’t had an autumn in the traditional sense, the seasons and conditions really are changing so the general calendar guidelines should be taken with a pinch of salt, do you happen to know if frequent verti cutting can completely replace scarifying on fescue or would a scarify still be required/beneficial?

I've bought a brand new stihl scarifier the same as yours after asking your advice on them. I've not used it yet. But I've noticed there is no bag with it. Not that you use one on a scarifier anyway. My question is tho. Do you have to wedge open the back hinged flap with something for the thatch to escape from? On my old Einhell I drilled a whole and put some para cord through it and up around the handlebar. Will I need to do the same with the stihl?
@LawnRight
@LawnRight Год назад
Hi.. you don't have to have the flap open..but it definitely helps.. Piece of string rope or bungee cord can be hooked on the 2 metal brackets halfway up the handle bars so it is open just a little bit .. I wouldn't open it too wide in case you hit any stones and they get flicked out the back..yell back with any questions

@LawnRight
@LawnRight Год назад
Hi Glenn so I wouldnt scarify so soon no.. spring maybe but not now.. question is why is it thinning..if shade then theres not much you can do other than cut trees back etc.. if the soil is clay and gets boggy, a good deep aeration will improve the soil so it's not so wet all the time

If the maximum day temp is around 10 degrees, but the night temp falls to around 5 degrees, would it still be ok to sow grass seeds?
@LawnRight
@LawnRight Год назад
Yes.. but be prepared for much slower germination.. could be 2 to 4 weeks before you see anything coming through, an syou have to look to see if any frosts are forecast in this time.. definitely much riskier but not impossible

2 questions if I may. 1 are you talking about day time temps. 2 excuse my ignorance but why do we need to scarify/rake if we use collection boxes on our lawn mowers?
@LawnRight

Hi yes, day time temps. Lawns build up thatch as they go through their life cycles. Until we can improve the soil microbiology it's worth scarifying regularly
