Lawn Care Tips that work? Discover how to get a nicer Greener lawn. Hi, I'm Shaun, and I run Lawnright Ltd (a lawn care business in South Yorkshire, United Kingdom). I'm also fanatical about lawns. This channel is here to provide lawn care tips, advice and help for all lawn care enthusiasts, as well as showcase some of the work I get up to on a daily basis.
As a lawn care provider, I get to visit hundreds of lawns each month. This gives me a chance to see what's happening out there and provide solutions. It also means I get to put solutions down in videos right here.
At times, my tips may push the boundaries of what is generally accepted. However, these are given because I have tested them and produced results. As a lawn care business owner, we often have very limited windows of time to apply certain products or carry out certain procedures, so this is what has forced me to try things out during times when it is less than perfect.
New Subscriber Shaun, love the level of detail you provide. I’ve got a clay issue where any heavy down pour creates a soggy lawn for a couple of days. I was considering using a petrol Auger to improve drainage but thought this may do the trick as well, not sure 6” is deep enough? You said you haven’t tried it on clay soil but it’s been 9 months. Thought I’d get your take please? Thank you in advance.
Hi... Yeah I've not used the proplugger much yet but for definite, creating holes as deep as possible is key. Whether using an SDS drill with a long drill but or post hole borer etc.. Avoiding any cables or pipes...
I put some weed killer on a section of my lawn and now it’s just black and dead! I scarified some dead sections off and then scattered some seeds and put some compost over the top + it has also rained but nothing has grown back! This was weeks ago too?!
Hi Dean it sound like you possibly put a total weedkiller on like roundup.. Basically anything with glyphosate in the ingredients? It would kill everything it touches... Thats fine if your intention was to do that.... But now you need to wait 2 to 3 weeks before any seeding can take place.... After the 2 to 3 weeks, then raking out all the dead matter, seeding so it touched soil then covering
What length would you do the first few cuts? I have mostly a fescue lawn with some bent in a shaded area (grass generally grows well though). The first cut was at 40mm but im thinking the next should be 30mm as fescue is very fine and will flop over until the density develops. Also leaving it get to 2 inches each time before it can be cut leaves it open to disease and the intent is to mow 15-25mm anyways as that's the healthiest height for fescue to be mower at. from my experience.
Great video! Getting a bit obsessed with watching your channel, in preparation for laying a new lawn and reviving an existing one. 🤣🤣🤣If you don’t know what type of grass you have, how do you know what to buy when overseeding? 😊
Hi 👋👋. That's why I often just say go for a general amenity.. Then you've covered most bases. Of course there are so many nowadays. Just used hurrells hm2 premium front lawn seed and that'll be a nice one too
Absolutely massive days work! And such an informative video - than you. Do you have a rule of thumb for estimating how much seed, fertiliser and compost you’ll need for a particular job?
Not so much.. I've got my own pricing sheet based on sq metres.. But a typical 40litre bag of fine compost can do anywhere from 7 to 10 sq metres.. Thanks
Knocking of the morning dew with a brush or lawn switch (if you have one) is key. A dose of “liquid” (faster action) higher Nitrogen feed in mid summer will also help. I tend to get mushrooms instead but I just mow them off.
You've got a point. What we noted since we bought a ride on mower = compaction. Lot more weight (man & machine) Got around it somewhat buy regularly runing over the lawn with a drag along roller with 3 inch spikes. Regarding wear patches - we have at least three access points to the lawn and the most direct route a laid two slate " stepping stones" - seems to work well. And the mower clears them without problems. Regarding the work patches - seems to be a case of either "dirtier clothes" , boarding school or maybe heavier duty play grass. In your clients case, perhaps running the washing line parallel to the terrace there & not out across the grass Have a good one....
Thank you for the video! Yorkshire people are the best! My beloved husband was born in Leeds so Yorkshire has a special place in my heart. With love from SWDevon. 💕🇬🇧
Another super informative video, thank you Shaun!... Oh and by the way i love the VAR lines in the second half of the video, and didnt take an age to make a decision. Job with the FA next year!!
I've been watching a lot of your educational videos over the last few days . These videos were very helpful for me , thanks a lot . Greetings from Essen ( Germany , Ruhr area )
Scarified mine a month ago, over seeded & top dressed, starting to look really nice, caught my son standing on a bare seeded patch practising his golf swing 🤬
Great points, this is just the reality of a family lawn I guess. I've accepted once my daughter is a bit older she'll be running and playing all over the back lawn. But hoping to get my front looking 'ornamental' :)
Hi just found you love watching you great stuff . I have clay wet lawn i have a big problem with red ants in the lawn they make very big mounds of soil how do I tackle them they have been getting worse each year 🐜 many thanks
I there I have done a renovation with my front lawn all looking nice so far about 3 cuts in now some seed heads coming up for poa, Some other weeds through that I have tried pick out can I spray a weed killer on the lawn that won't damage the new grass I have or keep up regular mowing etc and feeds
All I can say is thank you so much! You have provided so much insight into lawn care over the years and all for free. I admire your integrity to your craft, and I'm pretty sure you have influenced many positively. I live in Denmark, and recently (1st may) tried a small renovation. There is good growth, but lots of weeds around (kind of like the lawn you showed). So I was happy to see that it isn't just me that has this issue. That's the awesome thing with your channel and the follow ups you do. It just makes you even more credible. What type of NPK fertilizer would you recommend and what type of weedkiller? We have the "ready to use" roundup weedkiller here in a spray bottle. Once again Shaun, thanks a million!
Hi so honestly any appropriate Fertiliser will be fine... Ie "spring/summer".. That's all I use.. As for weedkiller for the lawn make sure it's suitable for Lawns. Roundup primarily will kill everything it touches including grass.. Although they have produced one that won't but please check it's safe for Lawns.. Any weedkiller will state if suitable for Lawns.. Ie resolva for lawns
Shaun. I've been watching your videos for ages. Sadly, I've just ended up in the hospital. Your videos are helping me get through this difficult time. Thank you.
Thanks for the new video LawnRight, you shared some excellent information! I had fusarium problems earlier this year but all under control after a couple application of Plazma fungicide. Some additional ways to prevent fungus problems are correct fertiliser applications so not to put too much Nitrogen down at high disease pressure times of the year, remove clippings, proper watering practices ie. watering in morning versus at night, regular foliar applications of EM1, and to control red thread with fungicides use one that contains the active ingredients azoxystrobin, metconazole, propiconazole, triticonazole.
Something I have wondered: I could brush the dew off the grass with a brush or by dragging a hose accross it, but could this actually make things worse by spreading the fungus throughout the lawn?
My dad taught me the brush off the dew tip if you need to dry the lawn off quickly for a mid morning mow. Works a treat. Just make sure you don't get spotted by your neighbours 😆
I have a few tiny red newly germinated grass blades lol. The high humidity last week has caused fusarium and red thread in the other part of the lawn. I came on in one day. My new lawn is looking amazing other than a few dying patches. fescue stripes so much better than rye as it has a perfect texture like fur.
I did an over seed and top dress today. I used Miracle Gro all purpose compost in a roller but it was SOOO fiborous that only about 70% comes out of the roller. What brand do you use and would it be better to use top soil instead? Also a crazy idea, why not mix the seed into soil in the compost roller so you do two steps in one? And even more crazy, you could pre germinate the seed and mix with soil in the compost spread, do you reckon this could work? Perhaps the next video for you!?!?!
