Oof. Yeah. A lot to unpack here. Fire Emblem Fates is pretty infamous for its...let's say inconsistent writin. And the children thing. And some other not super cool character stuff. And the blatant greed. Tldr: Fates is a pretty awful first game in the series for lots reasons. Including some characters who should have been bi not getting to be. #JusticeForSilas #JusticeForScarlet I never made it through Birthright, or played the other ones at all, but I had absolutely no idea Scarlet and female Corrin's supports were so romantic! 😳 Makes the male version look even worse than it already does, and yes, I'm salty about it because I also chose Scarlet.

For some reason, _Fates_ is just really, _really_ bad at LGBTQ representation? Just absolutely horrible at it? Like, one of the units has being a lesbian as a pretty significant aspect of her character, and yet _all_ of her S-ranks are with men, every single one, and it gets even worse if you look into it. I don't know what happened, because _Three Houses_ did a pretty good (if imperfect) job with this, _Engage_ let you get a Ring-rank (it makes sense in context) with literally anyone (even if the localization threw the baby out with the bathwater and made _literally all of them_ platonic), and their first attempt was in _Path of Radiance,_ which did an _excellent_ job with this.

tbf there's a lot of dialogue in fates that's just...not great and a lot of it is due to the fact the localization team did not give one single fuck about trying to make it accurate, they cared more about memes. Easily seen through supports like between the ninjas where an ENTIRE conversation was distilled into "..." and it was a rather important one at that.

This video is great!! As a lesbian who really felt the struggle of having to play M!Corrin to romance their fav, this video was a real fun watch. I was mostly a Conquest girly so seeing the differences between the supports was really interesting!!

I found it weird that Ryoma cannot S Support Scarlet.

The Fates games are very unique. It has a ton of strong points. The soundtrack, (some) of the supports (like Keaton Mozu!) and the fundamental gameplay mechanics. In fact, the gameplay mechanics are by far my favourite of any FE game I have played. But that gameplay is also part for its downfall. For one, the S supports very often feel forced and just slapped on. It makes sense, since everyone needs a "wide collection" of partners (and I think adding a bunch of gay ones would just make it worse, though I have not read any fanmade ones from the Gay Fates mod). Child units are kinda cool, actually.. the justification for their existence and other implications are a horror, but they pose for subjects of more specialised and unique builds. Also, Awakening, the predecssor to Fates, had child units that came from the future, but what really bothers me is that for Awakening, the writers still had the S supports be this overly awkward, forced marriage conversation, instead of them being more subtle and natural. Either way, it makes it clear that child units were also just a side thing, maybe even an after-thought. It makes me think that the S-supports were also moreso for child building than actual romancing, thus not implementing any gay supports. As to why they couldn't also make gay couples have children, unsure! Sure, all first gen women could become obsolete, but they didn't have to link all children to one gender (and Azura/Corrin) again. It's also especially sad that they have a friendship mechanic with the A+ supports, but have written no conversations for this (might have also been for gameplay reasons as to not bound one unit to a bad friendship class to benefit only one of them, but o well). Some have said here that Three Houses allows for more gay romance options (this time romance not doing anything for gameplay as well). Funnily enough, the S support options for men in Three Houses were rather awful, especially because two of them were fathers with wives, which the S rank were platonic. Only with later updates and DLC they added more. And in Fates the only gay options being Niles and Rhajat rough. While Niles is imo a really cool character, he is also sometimes protrayed as this pervy guy, and (at least) one of his supports was terrible, creepy, and just sexual harassment (my poor girl Mozu :c). I don't remember his support chain with MCorrin, but either way.. interesting selection for who the only mgay character is. And while I do not remember any Rhajat convos.. considering she is supposed to be just pandering for the Awakening Tharja people, I highly doubt that is any better. Conclusion of this: someone whose main appeal (seemed to be/) is writing being introduced to Fire Emblem via Fates is chatastrophic lol Also, MissIndecision, your character is absolutely adorable and I love them!!!!

i can totally relate to this on the other side as a queer man- as much as niles is genuinely one of my favorite characters, i always really wished i could romance laslow, keaton, and odin. it's very disappointing how limited the queer content was in fates, and three houses was hardly any better. this was a great video!

To be honest she should have probably had more supports in general but I feel about that with a lot of the "non" main characters who have kids. Felt like they wanted to have a character arc but she never does anything or leads anyone. Hoshido path she joins and I enjoy getting other path units as that's cool. Norh offed immediately which could have been a good part to take her as a prisoner and switch sides as corrin is literally trying to start a rebellion. Revo just a waste honestly. Last minute character development and pop gone Cordelia is probably the best unrequited love story ever done compared to the rest since Cordelia gets to move on and has a better character than sumia too. Even her daughter is better since she goes into fates. While I don't agree with changing her preferences "just because" I do agree she deserves better like a lot of fates casts

Yeah… the 3DS Supports could sometimes be amazing, generally decent at least, but the stinkers? Or even just underwhelming, like M!Corrin/Scarlet… the F!Corrin/Scarlet could easily have been used for both Corrins (them and the previous Avatar, Robin, mostly had the same regardless of gender but the few that weren’t were very much a mixed bag). The fact that Scarlet and other “Avatarsexual” characters were not given other Supports is a real crime, romance be damned; the M!Corrin one could have been used for another character, even with just a platonic ending, but the F!Corrin one is really good and not even allowed to be canon. And then she’s killed off in a stupid way… urgh. And yeah, this series and non-heterosexual content is super up-and-down… Pre-2010s, it was just subtext if that but it was often GOOD subtext. Then “Fates” tried to be inclusive after “Awakening” blatantly made everyone straight, but felt like the bare minimum… It was so underwhelming. And then “Three Houses” does more but still bungles with the males (only one M/M, two that LOOK like it but aren’t except in DLC, but does give multiple F/F romances?) And everyone in “Engage” is bisexual, more or less… in a bad story. This is really upsetting for someone like me, who loves FE warts and all, but I don’t blame you in the slightest; “Fates” is a bit of a dumpster-fire in the opinion of much of the fanbase for what it’s worth, but a bad experience is still a bad experience. You deserved better from this franchise than a paltry collection of romantic options in a world already teeming with troubles. I’m sorry.

I mean its not bad that not every single charcter be bi, it makes it more realistic (not everyone is bi i found that the hard way) and make the characters who are a more acurate representation

Im glad engage lets you be gay so we don't have to download mods to be gay but at the same time the issue of scarlet only marrying male corrin is now replaced by characters that have like no supports that read romantic with any other opposite gender character have to be able to be bi like Merrin.

Its a shame that you gave up on the entire Fire emblem franshise, cause the Ike's Games Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn, does a WAY better jobs at LGBTQ+ representation, and thats not even in the supports only since Radiant dawn dont have any supports dialogue You have Ike the first Semi-canon Bisexual main character of the franshise (not confirmed but heavely inplied with his relationship towards Soren and Ranulf and the ending of radiant dawn) Heather a radiant dawn exclusive character who's openly lesbian and shows attration towards the female units only especially Nephenee Kyza another radiant dawn exclusive who is the first (and only i think) Canon Non-Binary character who also is implied to have sentiments towards their boss Ranulf Lucia and Elincia / Tibarn and Reyson who have a relationship that either can be portrayed has best friend or romantic (espacially in radiant dawn) And even tho some character have their queerness has a gimmick ( like heather thats basically her only traits since she is a very minor character) that never falls into the offensive category and thats honestly quite impressive that amont of representation back in 2008

My condolences for getting Fates because you heard you could be gay... This would not make it any better but the supports with Rhajat are pretty damn awful so you wouldn't have been happy regardless.

I don’t know much about fire emblem, but it feels like the biggest problem here is that it treats its male and female protagonists differently at all. I know it’s unfair to compare the two games, but I much prefer the Baldur’s Gate 3 approach: give player characters of any gender the same dialogue with NPCs. This allows you to romance whomever you want, and, theoretically, lets the studio double the content on a single play through, rather than breaking the content up between gendered playthroughs, which, if you don’t do a second play through on a swapped gender, you won’t access all of anyway.
