The Scarlett Warrior is an amazing antenna that has been around in various forms since the 1990's. Sporting the famous "Modulator" style coil this is a base loaded antenna that really packs a punch for it's length and gets out as well as mofre expensive antennas such as the Sirio Megwatt 4000 but at the budget price of around £19.95 in the UK (Around $25 USD). What's so good about it? The price, the performance and build quality.
Over the years this antenna has been known as the following names.. Scarlett Warrior, Red Rocket, Red Devil and many more! Maybe you can help name a few more of the variants?
Buy one from Moonraker here:

I really enjoyed that Simon, thanks for sharing. I have tried a few in my time and you can't beat the still available Wallen Modular, the build quality is really good on them and not quite as bright 🙂

Hi Dave, glad you enjoyed the video! It was interesting to see a classic antenna giving such great performance for under £20. It just goes to show that you don't need to spend a fortune to get out well. I know few people that have wrapped the coil in black insulating tape to "tone down" the colour but I honestly think it looks quite stylish! I remember using the modulators back in the day and they were also hard to beat :)

Great video, I've been thinking about experimenting with one of these on 10 meters. Thanks!

Thank you! They should perform great on 10m. You might need to cut the whip slightly if you want to use without an ATU as you saw from my antenna analyser results but depending on your mounting preference - for example mag mount will depend how good your grounding is, and in turn will affect SWR slightly. As I don't leave the rig in the car I just use a simple magmount. Maybe not the best for performance but it's always worked fine for me.

On CB radio all mobile antennas are a compromise. You'll find very little difference between ANY two antennas of the same length. I've used a Valor Half Breed on my car for over 30 years and I've not been able to find any other antenna of similar length which beats it.

Yes that's true although for the money these are crazy cheap and just perform without too much effort. Someone else also pointed out to me that these seem to work better in vallies than some others like the Sirio 4000. That seemed to be the case when I tried the antenna in Dalby forest, North Yorks recently. Was pleasantly surprised.

Hi 👋 Interesting test. Thanks for the comparison 👍 I have both the same two antennas and I would have thought you would have the results you got. Where I find the difference is when there are hills, valleys and/or buildings in play. The Sirio seems to work better hill top to hill top where the Warrior works better in the valley dips. Just my none scientific observation! 😂 Thanks again! Thanks again from another Yorkshire Lad!👍👀

Thanks for the comment! I would agree. We’ve tried the antenna over the last couple of months and got similar results from both antennas but the Scarlett warrior seemed remarkably stable over long distance whilst mobile. Probably due to the whip being shorter than the sirio. I’ve also noticed that the Scarlett warrior works well in valleys and I tested this theory in Dalby Forest in North Yorkshire and it really performed beyond expectations. For the money it’s crazy value.

The only problem with the Scarlett Warrior is the Al rivets connecting the Cu loading coil to the brass studs top and bottom. Moisture gets in and galvanic corrosion causes high resistance between the coil, rivets and studs. I've drilled through and used self tappers to connect the coil to the studs and seem to have been successful in keeping the connections dry.

Thanks, someone else mentioned this too. Worth keeping an eye on but I don't leave mine on the car all the time so hopefully will stay in good condition for a while. For the price they are cheap and cheerful!

An enjoyable video. My findings over the years have been similar, however, I do need to mention that the red devils is less "directional" than the sirio when mounted not in the centre of the roof, and the sirio did get me longer distance contacts in the U.K. Than the red devil, however the difference is marginal. The main issue with the red devil is DON'T leave it in the car on a hot day!!!! As the coil bends and the rivits come loose!! I still like the red devil, and we still use one for certain purposes. Also there seems to be two lengths of those too. One is 189cm and the other is 171cms. Our is the longer one. Best regards, Tim HT 325 Warwickshire.

Hi Tim, thanks for the info. I don't think I'll need to worry about the hot days again until next year with the weather in the UK at the moment but I'll remember that one! One interesting thing that I have discovered is that the Scarlett Warrior seems to work better in low locations- such as the bottom of a valley than the Sirio 4000 (for example). It could be my imgination but it seemed to work better than other comparble antennas! Thanks SImon

I swear by them the red devil is different in that the coil is narrower diameter. I also uee the tri groundplane spindal thunderpole selll. Agree what is said re the rivets . I have used one since 1991.

Trees, bushesh and buildings are so closely, that can be little bit bad to transmitter signal
@Transmission1
@Transmission1 9 месяцев назад
That’s true. I used this location intentionally so we could use the antenna in challenging conditions 🙂

The problem with antennas for 10m and 11m band is the length - anything shorter will be a compromise and the performance is going to be worse/less range etc. There are plenty of smaller antennas but they are going to be poor in comparison.

That's funny - I was also down at Mablethorpe in Lincolnshire back in September and did some DX from the seafront carpark whilst on my break. I took the same antenna and got great results!

Not much difference between the Wallen Modulator and the Scarlet Warrior, the Modulator is a bit smaller too I have both twigs. regards 26TM013 John.

Hi John, yes I agree with you. Both are great antennas, you really can't go wrong for the price and they've been around for years. An old, gold antenna!
