Hi Simon ,hope all is well in your world,if id known you were going I'd have said hello,i got there early doors and had a couple of hours, got a few oldschool bits from lam junksale table, shame there was no bring and buy,but still a cool day out, take it easy mate ,catch you on the bands,26tm048 😊
Thanks for the video, good coverage of the kit. Sadly it looks like a special day for Saga members, with very few younger people. Unless the hobby attracts young people it will die.
I agree with you. I don't know many people under the age of 35-40 that are into radio. I'm 49 and have been involved in the hobby since I was a teenager. It's good to see some areas of the hobby appealing to younger people such as SDR tech and internet linking but that's another story...!
It also looks very quiet compared to the rallies of 20 years ago and earlier, when it was literally a job to move in the main hall, as I am sure many will remember.
Yes Moonraker just don't make an effort. Just two computers on the counter so people can order stuff online and they seem to be just on a huge data collection/marketing excerise!
@@Transmission1 The last time I went I said it was the last and that's when moonraker started that nonsense, shame as the others do make an effort. Oh well it is what it is I guess, take it or leave it.
@@matthewtwyman If you want to push away potential customers at a show its a great move, ever since they started that nonsense I stopped buying anything off them....smart hmmm no not really.
@@Transmission1 Wise move, I was on my way home around that time. Only just noticed the noise from inside was atrocious on my footage so that needs some work.
Retevis Just Throwing out cheap generic Chinese radios for you guys to ''review'' So never going to be unbiased And they all sound the same anyway, And probably the same Radios inside the case, For transparency Did you buy the radio Or were you Given it to ''review'' Yes or no, If you actually bought it it would probably be a much fairer review
A bit negative? Don't worry. I didn't sell my soul to Retevis for $40 ;) If you had watched the video you'd notice I was critical of the issue I discovered when charging the radio and also the unbalanced power output on the UHF band but never mind.. I did mention in the video that Retevis sent me the radio for review but the majority of kit that I've tested has been paid for by myself. I've always called things out if they aren't right. I've got nothing to gain by making things up when I test equipment. 73
Thanks for your comment! Yes it's a nice radio for the price. Large display and decent audio quality. For foundation licence holders this would be an ideal first handheld radio. The thing I've always loved about the Chinese radios is the fact that they've made amateur radio accessible for a really affordable price. Long may that continue!
Nice video. I bought a pair recently (noticed your video is 4 years old but these radios are still available to buy). I really like them. Have a great day from Northeast Texas US. 👍
Thanks! Yes I have still have these little radios and they still work perfectly. I was surprised at the range with the tiny little antenna but it does seem quite optimized for the band they cover.
Pauls audio isn't from his car. It's this radio related. In some places with lot of RF pollution, this radio will produce noise like this on signals under S9. I have experienced it in many chineese radios. This one included.
I know what you mean but on this occasion it was confirmed to be his car causing the issue as other stations can always hear the noise when he transmits. It was a Ford Ecosport with Kenwood TM-V71E. He has since removed the radio from the vehicle and switched to a Yaesu FTM-400 and no noise issues. I have found some of these Chinese radios very noisy on the receive particularly on the 2m band though.
are you sure it is "dual band"? did you try 220mhz? also our country 300+ Mhz are used for frashwater fleet. May you try 300Mhz? does it allow to enter it and transmit? thanks.
FYI I have just bought a new Scarlet Warrior after breaking both my originals. First thing I noticed is the coil is a couple of inches longer and the whip is shorter. Both antennas are the same overall length but the new one has a much narrower bandwidth and the whip is too short to tune to set minimum swr in the mid band. Lowest swr is at 27.88125.
I bought the jjcc jc-8629 but haven't received it yet. I mainly bought this for the analog gps. I didn't want to be reliant on aprs. Will be using this mainly for gmrs until I get my ham license.
Hi, Just cam across your video again and noticed you say you can't setup a scan range between say 220-240 as an example but you can as in your demo mate you clicked on UHF not VHF if you watch it back 🙂 Not a major deal anyway as you do mention the lack of AM that high up but hopefully an update will in fact be released and fix this so we can get a bit of military action 👍
Sadly not, the bluetooth function is only for programming frequencies. I've yet to see one of these cheaper Chinese radios integrate bluetooth audio streaming - maybe soon I hope!
I was already to go find one of these online, when I saw the TX Check marks in the CPS software skipped right over the GMRS (US) frequencies! Tell me it ain't so. There's no 462/467Mhz (FRS/GMRS Channels)?

Hi Simon, good review. I have one of these and I am amazed by it. I replaced the stock antenna with a Nagoya N771 antenna and I can speak to a friend of mine 10.3 miles as the crow flies, on VHF & UHF ham bands no problem! Hope to catch you on PMR again. Cheers. Steve de 26TM372.
Thanks! I was using the Retevis RHD-771 in part of the testing - seems to work great although Steve I was working with in the video seemed to think the stock antenna was better on 2m but it could have been down to conditions - we were pushing the limits of distance in the tests from his location. I love the TD-H3 for its compact size and it still manages to produce at least 4w on high power. Great value for the $30 or less!
Thank you. It all depends if you need the AM airband on this model or the extra power on the TD-H8. It's a difficult one to call since they both have similar features. The USB-C programming with the built in chip is nice to have in this model but they both can use Bluetooth and the cloud based ODmaster software so that might not be the main consideration. All depends how you are going to use it! TD-H3 is more pocket sized.
Okay, great thanks for clearing that up. I have watched loads of videos on these radios. This is the only video that has gone into detail and convinced me that they are actually decent. The Chinese radios have come a long way since the early days.
