At the time I flew to Madeira regularly, it was different. Of course, crosswind was always the same, a bit windy. But it was the short track (back then, 1.800m compared to normal 3.000m) with brutal set down that made it special. 2-3 go arounds were standard procedure. Never landed at first attempt. Set down were accompanied by passengers screaming of fear. Those were the days☺️
I can imagine how that felt, but with all of the water, rolling hills and thermals I am sure that pilot is certified for that airport! This is for most small areas in Alaska and even a seasoned flyer it still gets you from time to time! Just remember those pilots lives are in there hands as well! Thankfully either pilot in current times can demand go-around and it has to be performed!
And there is no Autopilot/ Autoland, you have two pilots who are focusing on landing safely while flying manually! Some of those fucking crosswinds would scare a pucker in any pilots ass!! The passengers get the full effect of it all as well. When those hit a x-wind at 45°.. th hey will know it!! I have nothing but mad respect for any pilot who flies into Madeira or Paro, Bhutan!! 🛩✈🛩✈🛩✈
Been only 1x to Madeira because of the airport. The landing on 2nd go around gave me the shits, and they said that was a mighty good one. Never again... A shame because Madeira is so beautiful.

@@doveronefoxtrot4417 I've no doubt but for each of the three times I've flown there I've been unfortunate enough to have had no problems - well the pilot flying had no problems!
if I was on that plane I would be more worried when they touch down than cheering when they initially touch down. Not much runway there and seeing it from inside after seeing dozens of go-arounds and crappy landings from outside of LPMA gives me perspective. Always wondered what it was like inside for passengers. Imagine landing in a 747 or Airbus in there - I want to go on vacation to Madeira and just camp outside the strip and see dozens of experienced pilots manually land on that thing the whole time. Best airstrip in the world.
I landed there (as a passenger) in the mid 1980's, runway was MUCH shorter then, touching down was not so much the problem, stopping before the sea was the issue!

I’ve never landed yet at Madeira. We had Three attempts but ended up at Porto Santo airport and got the ferry in the next day. Lovely holiday just a bit sweaty when it’s turbulent and thermic.
Not scary, was just a regular landing. November 27th had a 2 times go around before we landed. By the way, Funchal is most wonderful in december with all the x-mass lights etc.
Completely agree with you about the Christmas lights, Jos. I was out there for Christmas and New Year in 2005/6. There were 8 cruise ships in and around the harbour and completely out of the blue, my wife and I were invited to join a party of holiday reps on a very nice gin palace cruising amongst the big ships to watch the fireworks and see in the New Year. We were fortunate in that the wind was from offshore so we had a completely unobstructed view for the whole twenty minutes.
This is an insensitive comment. Just because you wouldn't be scared doesn't mean the author and others on board this flight weren't. Everyone is so tough and experts at everything on the internet 😆
@@NovejSpeed3 flew 9 times to Madeira, 7 of them look like this kind of landing. I am not a "tough expert" but after the first time you know what to expect and indeed others on board where less relaxed, just as I was the first time. 🙂
Looked like a great landing to me? Flying an aircraft near mountains can be dangerous if you are not experienced. Updrafts and downdraft surges abound. White Knuckle stuff and all hands on controls for sure.
Most people clap at touch down, assuming that the landing is finished, but people who have knowledge in aviation know that the landing is finished when the plane is in the blocks parked at the gate. Until then, a lot of unwanted events can occur.
It's difficult to appreciate from this perspective. Go look this airport up and see how difficult it is to fly in there. The passengers can feel and see the crazy turns ☺️
This reminds me of when my flight took off from JFK to Florida and the flight was normal and really smooth until we landed in Miami and everything looked futuristic the runway the buildings the cars we seen on the highway even the piolet got on the intercom and said " lady's and genital please remain calm, we may have landed at the wrong airport please bare with was as we figure out the problem the a few minutes later a a vehicle I have never seen before was aproching the plane and all of a sudden our plane was taxing down the runway and we lifted off the pilot again came on the intercom and said we may have to fly back to JFK to find out what and where things went wrong and we ended up going to Denver international airport where we can see that everything was like it should be and it all seemed like everyone on the flight suffered from some kind of altitude hallucination sickness. Needless to say we hopped on a different flight and made it back to Miami and everything looked different but normal the whole experience was just a lie I tell to people who might listen to me.
Can never understand why passengers clap when a pilot lands a plane, as first I doubt whether he can hear it, and also it his job to land the plane safely and I have flown in to Madeira Airport twice now and the pilot are expert at it.
Ryanair doesn’t fly there, but not because it has bad pilots, but because they don’t want to pay for additional training they’d have to undergo to land here.
