Scavenged Scott Genius: how broken is it?

Another very kind friend has donated me another old bike to tinker with. But this time it's not that old, and it doesn't look all that broken.
Or am I being overly optimistic? I suspect this might not be so easy to recommission, thanks to some insane hydraulics...

Great video! You usually don't want as much air pressure as they say anyway unless you're sending huge bangers and shredding copious quantities of extreme gnarr. I love the cartoon TNT look of that rear shock.
@red_dread
@red_dread 2 года назад
Well I put about 370 psi into it as per the table - which nearly bent my shock pump - and then when I got on it it immediately bottomed out. So clearly I need something beefier than this Wile-E-Coyote junk.

@@red_dread I guess the chances of anything 20y old defying a pressure of 370psi (!) were never going to be high.

There's never a bad time to get a new bike. But these shocks are fixable if you can be bothered! So now you have a new bike AND a perfectly good old one. Win.

I am gagging to get this one out for a ride, but early attempts at kerb-hopping prove that the rear shock is indeed toast. I expect trouble ahead.

Same bike,same project here!!! Awesome bike!!! Trying now to find seals for equilizer 2 and service kit for the talas damper.(the 2 most difficult parts of the restoration....) If you want help.... I have full instructions for service both.😁
@red_dread
@red_dread 2 года назад
Good luck and thanks for the offer of instructions - I might take you up on that - oliver.chesher@yahoo.co.uk. So far I've been lucky, both my shock and fork are holding air which is seriously impressive. Also it's a generally amazing bike - takes an absolute beating and has rapidly become my go-to winter bike for muddy and rough trails.
@windsurfing7219
@windsurfing7219 2 года назад
The problem with this shock is the leakage between the air and oil partition inside the shock. As far as I can see you have the same problem. When everything is correct,when you apply the specific pressure to + and -, the shock must be all the way closed. If is not (like yours) means that it haven't the right amount of oil inside the oil partition. You must remove the oil from the air partition and put this amount of oil to the oil partition. The easiest, but not correct, way to do this without open the shock is to remove the oil from the air schrader valves and fill oil from the bleeding oil valves (be careful not loosing the small spring and bolt inside valve). The correct way to fix it is to open the shock and replace oil and seals of the main piston and 2 IFPs. Because it is a pull shock, as far as I know, there's no other model to replace it....
@windsurfing7219
@windsurfing7219 2 года назад
The difficult part with the fork is that the talas cartridge is much complicated to service and difficult to find a total service kit. Fox suggest to convert it to float using a float conversation kit. If you do this you loose the function to change the length of travel.

Hello I am looking into getting one of these, what are those types of shock absorber on the rear called? They work by extending and not compressing like most do, I am having second thoughts on buying the bike because I can not find cheaper alternative of those type of shock absorber that extend and not compress.
@red_dread
@red_dread Год назад
The shock is called the Scott Equalizer 2. You can still buy replacements for almost £700 and I don't think there's a cheaper alternative, however I'm not despairing at this because there are plenty of aftermarket shock servicing shops that can do a strip down and replace seals and fluids for cheaper than that. This is probably what I'm going to do with mine over the winter because I suspect that as some viewers have advised, some air/oil has leaked between the two chambers, compromising the effectiveness.

@red_dread 11 месяцев назад
@@adamfodor4286 Hi, I haven't yet - I don't ride this bike very often and when I do it's plenty of fun even with an imperfect rear shock. However it does need doing and I can confirm that last time I googled it I found that there are people out there that can do it. Personally I wouldn't like to attempt a DIY job on this occasion, given that it's basically a highly pressurised grenade sitting between your legs.

Very unlikely as it’s a pull instead of a push mechanism! Also I don’t want to let this one defeat me - it looks so cool it would be a shame to bin it.

@@ericjohn5461It's insane how much pressure those shocks need isn't it? Yes, mine does have the multi-position selector lever. Until I get my shock properly serviced I use mine in the middle setting because it bottoms out too easily.
