The Charge of the Light Brigade was a charge of British light cavalry led by Lord Cardigan against Russian forces during the Battle of Balaclava on 25 October 1854 in the Crimean War. Lord Raglan, overall commander of the British forces, had intended to send the Light Brigade to prevent the Russians from removing captured guns from overrun Turkish positions, a task well-suited to light cavalry.
However, there was miscommunication in the chain of command, and the Light Brigade was instead sent on a frontal assault against a different artillery battery, one well-prepared with excellent fields of defensive fire. They reached the battery under withering direct fire and scattered some of the gunners, but they were forced to retreat immediately. Thus, the assault ended with very high British casualties and no decisive gains.
The events are best remembered as the subject of Alfred, Lord Tennyson's narrative poem "The Charge of the Light Brigade" (1854), published just six weeks after the event. Its lines emphasise the valour of the cavalry in bravely carrying out their orders, regardless of the obvious outcome. Blame for the miscommunication has remained controversial, as the original order itself was vague, and the officer who delivered the written orders with some verbal interpretation died in the first minute of the assault.
The Battle of Balaclava, fought on 25 October 1854 during the Crimean War, was part of Siege of Sevastopol to capture the port and fortress of Sevastopol, Russia's principal naval base on the Black Sea.

Agreed, its incredible. as for the riders, having your mount at a gallop and having it trip and go down head first can be a shock and a thrill. Hey cowboy, this your first stunt ride. Take a swig from the flask before we mount up. Once we get the horses galloping, breath! Pay attention to your horse and move with its back; this'll help you relax and go with the horse when the trip witre goes tight and throws your horse.

One of the actors in this was David Niven. He tells the story of being in the movie there was to be a scene of horses coming back from the charge. The director Michael Curitz who was Hungarian and his English was not the best at that time called out BRING OUT THE EMPTY HORSES. Niven and Flynn broke out in laughter and Curitz replied that they thought it was funny and that YOU THINK I KNOW F..K NOTHING I TELL YOU I KNOW F..K ALL. This caused Flynn and Niven to laugh even more. The book was either The Moon is a Balloon or Bring on the Empty Horses might be the last one.

May 11, 2019---Thanks for the video clip as it's been a few decades since I've even watched the movie. My copy's on VHS, back when AMC used to show the WHOLE movie with NO commercials until the credits had ended. Remember reading some where that when the "canons" started firing and the stunt men and their horses started falling from being "shot", one of the stunt men was killed. Seems a couple of other stunt men were right behind this guy and had NO time to swerve to avoid running over him with their horses. This wasn't discovered until AFTER the filming of this scene was done.

Actually the film was praised for the authentic battle area(s) chosen. This is, of course, Hollywood and it is a combination of the Charge and the Cawnpore massacre. This was a general tribute to their gallantry, not a strict historical depiction. What is little known is that Hollywood had been hit by some lawsuits earlier that felt the characters had defamed the real person(s) involved, so the use of very liberal screen plays was actually quite promoted. The use of the disclaimer 'This picture is fictional and does not represent real persons ........ etc, was another tactic used to protect the producers. That being said, the charge scenes were some of the most brutal ever filmed. The men and horses were throw in the air by explosives, trip wires, and hidden trenches. There were three men who nearly died from injuries, and so many horses had to be destroyed that Flynn himself lobbied for the ASPCA do oversee animals in films.

nonsense...ur dreaming...they DID NOT take the Russian guns ...the attack was a disaster....learn history....they were shot with artillery and then surrounded and saber-cut by Cossacks. Of the 670 attacking guardsmen of the Light Brigade, 57 were taken prisoner, 161 people were wounded and many later died from wounds, 110 riders and 332 horses remained lying on the field. The Russians were commanded by General Lipradni, and not by the Turks like in the film :))) In addition to light cavalry, the attack was attended by a brigade of heavy cavalry which also received shells. In total, 900 British soldiers and officers died that day. Show less
@ggarlick46

@@TheBlueCream Actual casualties were a total of 278 including captured men ..118 killed ...not 900. 195 of the cavalry still had their horses and half the brigade got back to their lines. In fact the Russian cavalry had nearly as many casualties in that earlier battle ..over 250 as the British did in the more famous light brigade charge.

I think that Errol Flynn is superb and absolutely believable in this role. There is a speech in Shakespeare's Henry V - the "Once more unto the breach dear friends" - it's a charge speech. Flynn delivers the same kind of speech but in only what..20-30 seconds of film and that speech has to be "there" to inspire what's to follow. He does it superbly. I think given his bio and womanizing and drinking that he was so underrated. And yet, I think he was a truly fine actor. Watch Operation Burma - as the commanding officer he's again terrific...if you had to serve, that character is whom you'd want to serve under.

One of the best from Hollywood's "Golden Age," and they don't come any better than this! Of course, the story's all BS but what a great action film just the same! Better than anything done now. By the way, the actor who gives the command "CHARGE!" is Nigel Bruce, a WW1 combat veteran who was so severely wounded he spent a year in rehab learning to walk again. He plays a fictitious colonel commanding the Light Brigade, NOT Lord Cardigan. You may also remember him as Doctor Watson to Basil Rathbone's Sherlock Holmes. By the way, anyone notice how the Russian commander has a strong resemblence to Joseph Stalin? I wonder if that was intentional?

The type of caps and the use of lances by the Light Brigade was actually inspired by Polish ulhans/lancers fighting in Napoleonic wars i.e. against Britain in Spain, when the unit was reformed in 1822. Succeses of the Polish light cavarly led to the establishment of similar units in different armies in the West starting from France. Polish lancers fought succesfully as recently as 1920 when they defeated Soviet forces at the cavalry battle of Komarów.

In terms of cavalry formations and practice, this isn't bad. Most movies are careless and use untrained, undisciplined extras and crew that have no sense of military anything. Most of their combat formations look like amateur mobs and their mass combat sequences make little sense, but this movie was made in 1936 when there were still actual cavalry units.

I admire the courage and honor of the cavalry of the past, However this was a terrible military decision . A frontal charge into artillery is suicide by cavalry , poor leadership led to the death of so many brave young men. Cavalry was successful in many battles of the past from Ancient, medieval 16th-19th century and up to the 1920 Polish -Russian war but not in this manner .

One of the greatest action scenes of all time even if some of the horses sadly were killed. Errol Flynn is great as the hero, but I always enjoy seeing Surat Khan, played superbly by a sneering C. Henry Gordon, finally getting his just deserts. * the reason for the charge in the movie is a massacre of unarmed men, women and children at Chukoti, "somewhere in India", but a direct re-creation of the Cawnpore Massacre in the Indian Uprising 1857 (Surat Khan being based on Nana Sahib, the British Raj`s No 1 Most Wanted).

The Light Brigade had been whittled down to regimental strength by the time of the charge, mainly as a result of malnutrition and disease. Their intended mission was to seize and spike the guns at the south end of the valley. When Lord Raglan saw what was happening, he immediately sent the Heavy Brigade against that objective, as it was too late to stop the others from charging to the end of the valley. That lesser known charge was what made it possible for the Light Brigade to get back at all. About half of them eventuall returned after storming the valley. They left a deep impression on their Russian adversaries! The Earl of Cardigan, the brigade commander- who had expected to die in this near suicidal operation- actually survived with barely a scratch!

Actually the charge of the expat Brit actors in San Fernando valley. A bunch of immigrant Brits to the USA in southern California's San Fernando Valley, nearly undeveloped except for agriculture in 1936 killing off lots of studio rented horses. IMDB production notes suggest this was between Chatsworth and Woodland Hills long before all those suburban tract houses were built. The loss of so many horses in this film caused Hollywood to adopt new safety production rules for horses. The plot lines in this movie are almost total fiction although the 1968 remake was even worse with its leftist anti-war military hating B.S. totally fashionable with the UK's chattering class back then.

That same day, the British Heavy Brigade charged, uphill, against a Russian cavalry Corps, and drove it back. By contrast, when Russian cavalry charged against British infantry (Highlanders) they didn't even bother to form square, and repelled them from line formation, giving rise to the 'thin red line' of heroes, tipped with steel.

Like watching The Spy Who Loved Me; any relationship between the original story and the screenplay is purely coincidental. 1968's version is closer to actual history. This is a lot like They Died With Their Boots on.

@@stevepaul6955 it’s so tragic. But, on the flipside, it’s resulted in regulations that would prevent any such sequence in such a fashion being done again. I wonder when they started using the verbiage that no animals were hurt at the end of films.
@honeybadger6313
@honeybadger6313 Год назад
This film was responsible for the deaths of 25 out of the 125 horses in total used and the death of one stuntman. They used a tripwire to cause the horses to fall some died outright others had to be put down later. Errol Flynn a keen horseman was outraged and physically attacked the director. The public outrage was so bad it had an impact on its box office ratings and was instrumental to companies creating new policies to safeguard animals in future films. Warner Brothers also did not re release this movie and I have only seen it once on the TV in the 1980s. It’s probably also why this scene has been cut down. The Stuntman was killed by a fallen sword that landed wedged upright the stuntman fell on top of it. There is a rumour that another stuntman also died who was drunk on set and fell off and broke his neck though not confirmed. Always had mixed feelings when I see this for that reason as it is a brilliant scene of a cavalry charge.

@AlexMsk275
@AlexMsk275 4 года назад
@сергейкосенков-л9й

@Fernando" Yes 50+ horses died in the filming of that charge, but also 7 (human actors) Film Extras. That is why no T.V Stations / Sky or the like will ever show this film & have not for decades. I loved it as a kid & still do, it is a shame they refuse to show it- if you think of those actors died making it let alone the horses, in a way they died in vain if it is never now shown. As for Errol Flynn he was a superb actor in the 30's/40's but I am always hesitant of lauding him too much as he was a draft dodger ( protected by Hollywood) all tough and stuff on screen, but in real life a wimp who avoided call up & service in WW2.

Isn't it well established that Flynn simply didn't give a shit about anyone but himself? Or anything except maybe his dog? Certainly not a bit of Patriotism towards Australia, the UK or the USA. That's why he never volunteered. Its always amusing to me when the subject of military service, Errol Flynn and John Wayne comes up. People shit all over Flynn as a draft dodger, but laud Wayne. I've never read a definitive reason why tough guy, ex-footballer John never served. Any physical ailment that kept him out of the service didn't stop him running or riding in movies. John Ford, who did serve in a non-combat role, relentlessly took the piss out of Wayne on the set of Donovans Reef. Of course, it didn't help that Waynes co-star was a decorated USMC combat vet, Lee Marvin.
