Great innovation. BRAVO! Rolls Royce and variable pitch propellers have also contributed to this wonderful innovation. WELL DONE ALL!

Did you see the model backing into the ice and when the prop hits the ice the pod jumped sideways? What do you think will happen in the real world if that pod jumps? Also smashing ice with a near freezing bronze prop don't sound like the smartest thing to do not to mention what it would do to the gears and such in the Pod itself.
@riipper666
@riipper666 2 года назад
Model tests don't reflect reality in that case. Full size azipod steering is hydraulic and there are overpressure valves to take care of any overpressure situations. In any case they are dimensioned to take the ice lods. Bronze props have been used in ice classed ships for decades, also stainless steel is used. There are established methods to dimension the prop to handle the ice milling loads. Finally, Azipods don't have gears, the shaft is directly coupled to an electric motor.

Hving an azipod just for ice breaking use specially non prop just rock crushing power & ability to raise & lower the depth to work the ice is a powerful grand idea.

If rock breaking ice pod stuck out in front of the ship Or could turn right & left the width of the ship + then spin around no drag when no ice clearing needed, is a perfect idea. Not for propulsion but it could hve pressure jet steering on opposite side of the ice /rock crusher. Rocky ledges that stick out & partially draft block water ways can b crushed/pulverized & no longer a Concordia concern.

The whole ice breaking thing, I'm mire concerned about the fact that it sounds like an over promise. I say for first trials go escorted by at least a proper ice breaker. Last thing you want is for this ship and its passengers to get trapped in ice.

@oldfucker68 5 лет назад
Can you say bronze
@MrJdsenior
@MrJdsenior 4 года назад
@@oldfucker68 Yes, brass wouldn't work to well, never heard of a brass prop. Usually aluminum, bronze, or stainless steel, in the applications I saw. I actually thought the ski/pleasure boat bronze props were great. Very ductile. Could sometimes take a pretty good strike, and be hammered back into usable condition fairly easily. They were also mid-level in price, and thinner than aluminum, but not as thin as SS (performance). I wouldn't be at all surprised if plastic (carbon) is in use today also. I know they use it for foils. Bronze is a different color than brass, a deeper more golden hue, and will polish to a spectacular looking finish. And yes, the hull breaks the ice, I would wager more by climbing and crush breaking it with its mass from above than just ramming it forward, which would be useful only for fairly thin ice, I expect, and would take IMMENSE thrust to accomplish.

It has always amazed me that the smallcraft have not taken notice of the sea going vessels propulsion systems. Having two thumping great outboards on a relatively small boat, that drick petrol faster than a drunk drinks a bear has in somevways managed to avoid the notice of boat buyers. With todays engines and fuel costs replacing these gas guzzlers with a four cylinder engine driving two props seem a matter of sanity, but clearly has escaped the notice of the likes of Johnson and Honda,. Z drives are most definatly are not a new idea but they are a very sane idea. They also have the added advantage of being fixed to the boat making theift almost inpossible. The other opsion of course is water jet drive which is also very manovarble. All the large shipping is going over to pod drive units with electrical power this is very smart as it means that the engine runs at a constant speed, a lot more conservative on maintenance costs regsrding the engine.
@TyphoonVstrom
@TyphoonVstrom 7 лет назад
You are aware that a cruise ship and a small planing vessel have two radically different hull shapes, and speed ranges, aren't you? Two of those Azipods on a planing hull would render it a useless slug, kind of like a yacht. And by the way, "all the large shipping" is NOT going to Azipods. only ships that frequently perform their own docking or close quarters maneuvering have a need for Azipods- it eliminates reliance on tugboats on smaller ports. Large, ocean going freight ships still use a single engine and screw as it's by far the most efficient setup.

Hulls break ice.. Until the ice extends further down and then its a wall... A wall of ice... I big thick wall of hardended ice... You arent breaking that. Little swivel props handling the excessive forces of a many thousands of tons heavy vessel slamming into a solid ice sheet without snapping off?- show me that working in real life.. Please. It's like brushing a tree with your car and hoping the side mirror doesnt come off. A yacht in the Arctic/Antarctic?- whoever thought that up would trust bill cosby to take his drunk sister home untouched...
