Thank you so much. I grew up in Tekoa WA and my Dad used to order anhydrous ammonia cars for Gardner & Smith Fertilizer & Chemical in Tekoa and Oaksdale. Dad had a pass and the agent's son in Tekoa was a high-school friend so we'd occasionally ride in the caboose south to the county seat in Colfax on the UP. In those days (mid 70's) typical power was a GP-9 or GP-7 A & B.unit combination If we were very lucky we got to ride in the cab. Living in Tekoa as a kid I got to see the UP from my grandmother's back porch, the Milwaukee cross the viaduct in Tekoa from my parent's front porch, and the Northern Pacific from my Aunt's back yard in Oaksdale. It's so great to see your excellent work. I can almost smell the journal grease, creosote, and diesel exhaust from my childhood. Perfect....

Oh very cool and wow that's fun to ride the caboose! Good old EMD power! I've never been to Tekoa but I've seen photos of that bridge. I'm so glad you enjoyed Mike!

So many great things here. The Palouse, to me, is a very scenic and fascinating area. Your drone shots showed the terrain very well. I see that the summer wheat had already sprouted-nice and pure green. Nice also to see the railroad has some shuttles from local to terminal elevators. That’s long-gone with the class ones and grain trucks now perform the shuttles in most of the country. The Palouse terrain also doesn’t allow for the loop load-outs such as on the BNSF at Tokio. Another fun part of your drone shots was watching the ground chasers leap frogging and sometimes having to flip around when confronted with a dead end. Well, well done Mr. Dan-you made my day!

Thanks so much Bill and 100% agree about being very scenic! It's wonderful out there and yes kind of an old school operation they have going which we indeed can't take for granted. Ha yeah it was fun leapfrogging with my other railfan buddy and honking as we passed each other.

Thank you for this video on the Palouse & Coulee City Railroad, Dan! The train, with your friend Jason as the engineer, took us on a wonderful trip through the Palouse area of the State of Washington. The train traveled through some beautiful landscapes which your drone footage was able to show us. You mentioned that engine, WAMX 5012 began life as a Chicago & North Western Railroad GP50 in 1980. As a Chicago & North Western Railroad fan, I noticed that the gong bell that the CNW had attached to the front of engine is still there. I did some research and found that WAMX 5012 started life as CNW 5095 and was built in August 1980. Chicago & North Western placed an order for the first 50 GP50s ever built for delivery in 1980. These 50 engines were purchased primarily for use on the CNW's Falcon TOFC trains which ran from Global I in Chicago, Illinois to Fremont, Nebraska. At Fremont, Nebraska the train was handed over to the Union Pacific for delivery to the west coast. Global I was CNW's yard located east of Western Avenue and 14th Street in Chicago, Illinois. This was the first of CNW's TOFC/COFC yards. Union Pacific still uses Global I to originate and terminate intermodal trains. Global I was built on the site of CNW's "Potato Yard". The "Potato Yard" was the yard where trains of refrigerated cars (originally Iced bunker cars and later mechanical cars) loaded with produce from the western states and other locations to Chicago. At this yard local produce buyers and east coast produce buyers would inspect the cars to purchase the contents. The cars of produce heading to the east coast would be transferred to other railroads to head east.

Thanks a lot Thomas and thank you for all that info! Pretty neat to learn all of that. I think it's super neat there is still a GP50 running around. Don't see many of those at all anymore even on shortlines.

Shortlines are always exciting and this one is no exception. The rolling hills are amazing, especially when we see them from high above. No wonder this area is famous. The little towns the train goes through are lovely. Typical American country towns, where life is much slower and quieter than in the big cities. The spring weather was very nice and the green fields are cool. It's awesome you could chase your friend's train. Wonderful movie again Dan. Your updates never disappoints.

Thanks so much Z! Very happy with this one as I'm sure you could tell. Yeah and these little towns are way out there away from anything significant! I love that feeling myself when I'm out there. Several years ago your videos introduced me to Joso trestle and Palouse Canyon, which became part of a memorable day's drive in 2022 from The Dalles to Spokane through Colfax. Amazing and varied scenery, Lyons Ferry Road getting to Joso was a highlight (of stark and distinctive landscape, it's not train country). Then a southbound train on the trestle, what luck! Your services to tourism should be recognised. 😊 John from Australia.

I was lucky enough to ride that line in the 2000’s. Funny but as I’m watching I’m saying to myself how much faster it looks like the trains running compared to what I remember as either 5 MPH or 10 MPH track. Glad to hear they can run faster now.
@TheRailfanDan
@TheRailfanDan 2 месяца назад
Oh wow very lucky indeed! Yes I am very glad they have increased the speed and I think a lot of that must have to do with them bringing the big UP unit trains into Endicott. I have been told they get a bonus if they can bring them back to the UP at Hooper within 16 hours of the UP handing it to them.

And yeah, it was too bad you didn't "swoop down" and say Hi to your friend that would've been cool! With all the tech out there, do they make a drone with a speaker? Another fun video...Thank you!
@TheRailfanDan
@TheRailfanDan 2 месяца назад
What's funny is actually that first scene after he crossed over the Hwy just after I cut the video off and moved to the next location he actually stopped right there to turn around a take a photo of the valley below down into Colfax. Pretty great! Actually yes you can add speakers to drones but those are more geared for commercial use like with first responders and such.
