The Scenic Railway at Scenic World, Katoomba, in the World Heritage-listed Blue Mountains of Australia, holds the Guinness World Record for being the steepest passenger railway in the world. Measuring just 415 metres in length, and boasting a maximum gradient of 52 degrees (128%), the vertical difference between the two termini is an incredible 206 metres! The railway was originally constructed by the Katoomba Coal Mine in 1878, but in 1928 colliery workers began supplementing their incomes by charging hikers in the Jamison Valley sixpence a ride. Passengers were initially transported in an open coal wagon, but in 1933, a purpose built, 12-seater passenger car named Jessie was brought into service. In a wonderful nod to the history of the line, Jessie still presides over proceedings at the upper station, perched on a ledge opposite the modern, new platform. When the mine closed in 1945, a local entrepreneur named Harry Hammon had the inspired vision to purchase the railway and convert it into a dedicated tourist operation, and so Scenic World was born. Almost eighty years later, Scenic World is still owned and operated by the Hammon family, and it has become one of the largest employers in the Blue Mountains. One of the 1945 passenger wagons is on display close to the lower terminus of the line, but passengers are now conveyed in much more sophisticated vehicles. Introduced in 2013, the modern, four car train has seating for 84 passengers, not to mention the ability for travellers to adjust the angle of their seat! On leaving the upper terminus, the train immediately begins its descent, travelling through a natural rock 'tunnel' before emerging into the open, revealing breathtaking views of the Jamison Valley through the transparent (but weatherproof!) ceiling. We were incredibly fortunate with the weather on the day of our visit, with clear skies and wonderful, autumnal sunshine. We were treated to spectacular vistas of nearby Orphan Rock and The Three Sisters, not to mention the awe-inspiring majesty of the Jamison Valley and the sheer expanse of the Blue Mountains landscape. Truly magical! I'd love to hear your thoughts about this video. Please leave comments below. And if you enjoyed it, please click 'Like' and perhaps Subscribe to the channel. Thank you.

I first rode the Scenic Railway in the late 1970s. There were no automatic hydraulic doors so you kept yourself inside the car, the roof was 2" wire mesh so the sclerophyll forest was free to drip on you going both up and down, and there was a grab bar in front of you if you were a bit frightened. I can find no record of fatalities then, or since then. The O. H. & S. zealots and insurance companies have really sucked a lot of fun out of this world . . . unless of course you consider that the current generations and their 4" screen need protecting from themselves. And don't even try to get me started on the safety railed boardwalk at the bottom of the descent. Nevertheless, good work Karl. Up to your usual excellent standard.

Thank you for your fabulous and very kind comments Teddy. I'm really glad you enjoyed the video. The 'new' train does seem very high tech and a little bit like Disneyland, with its hydraulic door and Indiana Jones soundtrack (I had to mask that with royalty free music in the video!) It's all a far cry from the original vehicle 'Jesse' seen alongside the upper station at the start of the video. I do like how Scenic World have preserved some of their old vehicles as static exhibits though. There's even one of the original cable cars in a park outside of the complex.
