In this video, we will be looking at Sch.80 PVC and CPVC Ball Valves, which are used to regulate flow in pipelines.
PVC or Polyvinyl Chloride is one of the most widely used piping materials. These specific Sch.80 PVC valves are manufactured via injection molding and provide excellent chemical and corrosion resistance with a range of pressure handling capabilities. Applications for Sch.80 PVC Ball Valves include wastewater and slurries, water treatment, chemical lines, and hot & cold water. CPVC (Chlorinated Polyvinyl Chloride) is created post chlorination of the PVC polymer. This process allows it to withstand temperatures of up to 33℃ higher than regular PVC and increases its resistance to fluids at higher temperatures, along with greater fire resistance. Sch.80 CPVC works well in process piping, hot and cold water systems, corrosive waste drainage, and other applications where elevated temperatures may be of concern.
- Both materials can be used in the following industries: Food & Beverage, Commercial construction, Water and wastewater treatment, Marine, Laboratories, Manufacturing, Pharmaceutical and Hospitals.
- Our range of Sch.80 PVC and CPVC Ball Valves consists of 2-way ball valves for typical isolation (on/off) applications, and 3-way ball valves for multi-directional flow applications.
- Valves in these ranges are offered in sizes 15mm to 100mm, and have the option of either EPDM or FKM seals. The seal selection is governed by its chemical compatibility with the fluid in contact with the valve.
- The connections on these valves are known as the True Union type, which gives them true full bore and flow characteristics.
- The 3-way valves are available in either T or L Port configuration.
Let’s start by looking at our Sch.80 PVC Ball Valve selection.
- Firstly, we have a 2-way True Union Industrial Ball Valve. These have a pressure rating of 235 PSI across the range.
- We also have 3-way True Union Industrial Ball Valves. Sizes 15mm to 50mm are pressure rated to 235PSI, and 65mm to 100mm are flanged connections and are rated to 150PSI.
- All pressure ratings are given at 23℃, and have a minimum and maximum operating service temperature of 4℃ to 60℃.
Now let’s look at the Sch.80 CPVC Ball Valve range.
- The range of product and the pressure rating of Sch.80 CPVC ball valves is as per standard Sch.80 PVC Ball Valves. However, the difference is obviously in the material of construction, which provides an even higher level of resistance to temperature and aggressive chemical applications.
- These valves have a minimum and maximum operating temperature of 4°C to 93°C.
- Due to the additional chlorination process with the CPVC valves, these are a higher cost option when compared to standard PVC.
Pressure and Operating Temperature Notes:
- It is important to keep in mind regarding the pressure rating for both Sch.80 CPVC and PVC Ball Valves, that as temperature increases, the pressure capability decreases, meaning the valves will need to be derated for maximum pressure. If you want further details on this, refer to our PVC Pressure Pipe & Fittings Technical Manual available for download on our website.
Design Specifications:
- All Sch.80 PVC and CPVC Ball Valves have the same material of construction specifications across each range, the only major difference is the seal in each valve, and the suitability for various chemicals.
- The valves have a Safe-T-Share stem with double-ring stem seals. The Safe-T-Share stem connects the handle to the ball and allows the ball to be opened or closed to control the flow of liquid going through the valve. It is a lot more durable than the stem on other ball valves.
- They have a Polypropylene valve handle, with a built-in lock mechanism. To lock the handle, this can be done by pressing it down and to unlock the handle, you pull it up.
- The union nuts have buttress threads, and the seal carriers are Safe-T-Blocked.
- On the side, there is a flow arrow to ensure that you install the valve in the right direction of the flow.
- All valve components are replaceable, and because of the union on each side of the valve, they can easily be removed from a pipeline for maintenance, repair, or replacement of parts. They are super lightweight, so very easy to install or remove from your piping system.
Certifications:
- All ball valves are pressure rated to ASTM F 1970, ASTM D 1784, and ABS.
