Scharwenka is becoming better-known now as a composer. He was - in his day - renowned as a pianist (and man) of extreme culture. There seems to be some disagreement about the level of Liszt's involvement in his formation. The way I read events was that he was already performing in public and was a largely finished artist before he ever met Liszt. He did indeed visit Liszt on occasion, and Liszt enjoyed hearing him play for him. It doesn't appear that the relationship was one of master-pupil though.
Scharwenka left a number of acoustic records, some of which are already here on RU-vid. I am uploading a few of his piano rolls of the larger-scale repertoire. This a Welte Mignon roll of numbers 1-8 of Schumann's Kreialeriana, released in 1905.
The original file came courtesy of Christopher Neave, derived from his Welte Mignon Vorsetzer, optimised for this playback on a Yamaha Grand Disklavier by Ian Williamson.

Scharwenka was a friend of Moriz Rosenthal who was still regarded as a 'pupil' of Liszt, despite the fact that he, like Scharwenka, was already an established pianist in the 1880s, when he was under Liszt's influence. I wonder if Scharwenka and Rosenthal had met each other for the first time while visiting one of Liszt's 'classes'. Let me know if you know more about this possible link. Thanks a lot for the interesting upload!

Rosenthal (b.1862) was younger enough than Scharwenka though, that the 1880s masterclasses were of different significance.......

Rosenthal and Scharwenka knew each other. I 'm not sure when or if they met in person but their written correspondence is that of people who knew each other more than purely distantly.

@@d60944 - As far as I know, they were good friends. Scharwenka dedicated a set of piano variations to Rosenthal, and I noticed that the theme of that set of variations sounds remarkably similar to the theme of Rosenthal's own set of variations! I'm quite sure there is a connection there.
