In a recent live training session on our UC Admission Secrets Facebook group, I, Coach Tony, focused on schedule planning for the 2024-2025 school year. I began by discussing the required classes for UC admissions, emphasizing the A through G requirements: History (2 years), English (4 years), Math (3 years required, 4 recommended), Science (2 years required, 3 recommended), Language Other Than English (2 years required, 3 recommended), Visual and Performing Arts (1 year), and College Prep Elective (1 year). I also highlighted the importance of meeting both the UC admission requirements and the California high school graduation requirements.
Next, I explained the key factors that UC admission readers care about, primarily the A through G requirements and the UC GPA. The UC GPA is calculated from the summer after 9th grade to the summer after 11th grade. While 9th and 12th grades are not included in the UC GPA calculation, their rigor and grades are still considered. I stressed the importance of maintaining academic rigor through honors, AP, IB, and dual enrollment courses. Dual enrollment was particularly recommended for its efficiency and flexibility, allowing students to earn college credits by passing their classes with an A, B, or C.
Finally, I introduced our strategy for increasing academic rigor and maximizing chances for UC admissions. This involves taking advanced courses, particularly in math and science, and ensuring continuous engagement in rigorous coursework throughout high school. I also offered a free resource list for California community colleges with IGETC-approved courses to help families plan their dual enrollment. I encouraged participants to reach out with questions and to join our future training sessions for more guidance on navigating the UC admissions process.
