We just received our Scheppacj Compactor and it is time to put these Monster Field Posts in the ground. We were gifted a load of 20cm diameter fence posts (8 to 10") from the local river reinforcement project. We ended up with nearly 60 posts at 3 m long (14').
We will be using them on our new land where the Container House will be built but in the meantime it is time to tidy up the homestead electric fence.
We unbox the Scheppach HP1200S wacker plate and give ti a go in the field. A nice piece of kit for sure and will be very helpful on the new house build and ground works.
Ian & Julie are building their tiny homestead and soon to be starting the biggest project of their lives - a Passive House Container Home which will be totally off grid.

Ian & Julie, recently i could find the American-style post hole digger in BricoDepot (in Romania) but they are also in France., if you still need it.

Hi the two spades with a hinge in between are called shovellers. Using shovellers will make your post hole alot bigger, which means more to put back. May I suggest making a small hole with a long bar and filling the hole with water, this soften the ground making arger penetrated easier.

good tip - I am hoping on my knew plot there are no rocks - last time I dug was 2 metres down and all soil.

My Scheppach compactor is similar to yours.........has lasted a good 5 years......obviously only used in summer for projects......always starts....first or second pull.

For the price they are well worth it and I hate giving money to hire firms

@@HomesteadingUncontained Just a tip, they don't need a 'hulk' style pull, just a gentle slow tug will do.....had a bloke come and work for us....he pulled too hard and broke the cord.....next day another friend want to borrow it...he took it fitted a new cord used it and sent it back with a full tank of fuel.

Hello, I have been enjoying your videos! Very fun to watch, and it looks like you're having a great time! The interaction between you and your wife makes me smile! Regarding the use of a plate compactor around the posts. A plate compactor is best designed for granular soils, such as sand an gravel. For compacting around a post, a rammer will be much more effective. Plate compactors really don't penetrate too deep, likely no more than 15 to 20 cm. A rammer is best suited for cohesive soils such as dirt and clay, and it can pernitrate 40-60 cm. On the other hand, compacting around a driveway or path made of gravel, the plate compactor is the preferred choice. They can be interchanged for different jobs, and each has their strong points. But, if all you have is the plate compactor, then take it for a spin! Either way, it much better then doing a lot of these by hand.

Cheers Tom - yes the plate compactor basically liquified the soil around the post and made it worse. I now have a tamper which I “borrowed” from my son which is much better. The plate compactor is going to be put to good use on the garage floor slap int he coming weeks.

I saw your msg on Lumnah acres. So I checked out your channel. What beautiful land you have. I'm in the US. Wish I could send you a post hole digger would help get those rocks out of the holes. They have augers that attach to your tractor did you see on Lumnah Acers. Take care and thank you for sharing.

Thank you so much - I am looking at some options for the auger as our next Fence project will have 50 of these posts. I love the Lumnah Acres channel, I feel we ware following a little behind, with working on our land and about to move towards our off grid house build...... thanks again

Should have put post wraps to lengthen the life of the posts
@HomesteadingUncontained

I would agree on a domestic install but this is an agricultural fence so the least amount possible - these posts were left over from a river bank reinforcement job and were just pounded into the river bed - they will last as long as I will. But on the build site, yes, we will protect them and concrete some of them in too.

I see you get Screwfix deliveries, is this a French version? I got my post hole shovel/ digger from them
@HomesteadingUncontained

Yes, we got out post hole digger from them, or it may have been Tool Station. But both are now here in France which is great.

does that digger have an option / lever which controls track wdth? just asking as every one ive use does.
@HomesteadingUncontained
@HomesteadingUncontained Год назад
It was an option, but I did't take it as I was trying to get the cheapest price possible (budget restrictions).

dampening the soil would of helped I think... :)

Yeah, for sure. I have quite a few more to do now so will give it a go. But I also got my mini digger with an auger (new tools), so I can go a little deeper. Thanks for watching...Ian

I can tell that manual labor is a foreign language to you, but at least you are trying and figuring out how to get things done. By the time your container home is done you will be speaking it fluently and you will have man hands.
@HomesteadingUncontained
@HomesteadingUncontained 2 года назад
you are funny. All I do is manual labor. Never have I hired someone to do a job, I do all my own work including two previous house build/projects. Hope I don’t come across as you describe.

@@HomesteadingUncontained did not mean to come across as mean, I just found the way you used tools and equipment unconventional, maybe a difference in cultures and how we do things. I did enjoy watching. Good luck in your container build. Take a look at these channels, “Andrew Caramata” and “Diesel Creek”.
