Dude thank you SO MUCH for talking about its gaming performance, so many people leave that out because it isn't what it's really intended for but from the sound signature I've been hearing about I suspected it might fit gaming well.

I intend to purchase this as a pre-amp. It's an inexpensive way to up the quality of an under 3 grand system.

Nice review. My Valhalla 2 arrives this week! I'm hoping it can push my newly acquired HD800S's to another level.

Awesome, I think you will love it! Even today I'm still using it a lot and it's had 0 issues so far and sounds as good as day one. I am planning on pairing it with a solid state amp for doing audio mastering in videos, but something about that tube sound is just so nice for music.

Some minor things: Not all planars are hard to drive, the ones you mentioned are fairly easy to drive, much more so than my hd 650, and you cannot use e-stats with regular amps meant for normal headphones, estats generally come with their own matching amp but you can use some different estat amp pairings, the entire functionality of a estat amp is completely different than that of a tube amp or a solid state meant for regular dynamic and planar headphones.
@WordTech
@WordTech 5 лет назад
Planars don't pair well with tube amps either way though, at least IMO. I mean my planars don't sound very good (and the bass is super subdued) on the Valhalla vs any of my solid state amps.
@bigyeetus2866
@bigyeetus2866 5 лет назад
@@WordTech Oh yea I get that, I just got my valhalla 2, and yea I noticed that bass seems to be slightly less punch but the at the same time it doesn't seem like subbass has been subdued any, which I feel gives a nice soft quality to it.
@WordTech
@WordTech 5 лет назад
Yeah it all depends on preference, it handles them decently well, but I prefer a bit more emphasis on bass myself, so something more powerful such as my Xonar Essence works better.

I purchased a Valhalla 2 because it was designed specifically for cans like Sennheiser HD800 and other 300 ohm models. My Magni 3 puts out 430mw into 300 ohms. It does "ok" with the HD800s, but maybe 80% at best. The V2 puts out a monster 800mw into 300 ohms. It's voiced for certain headphones. Not for those that like bloated bass, or harsh treble. Makes a woo audio amp and others seem toy-like. Fact: if anyone else made the Valhalla 2 it would cost at least twice as much. Before Schiit audio, a headphone amp that could properly drive 300 ohms was close to, or over a grand. If you are at all in need of more power, the Ragnarok will man-handle ANYTHING on the market. Caution: "Precise" when it comes to audio is hyper subjective. Some people think some headphones are "precise" when in reality, they have a 9khz spike or even a big treble rolloff. FWIW: The asgard is inadequate and NOT EVEN CLOSE to accurate for 300 ohm cans. Maximum Power, 300 ohms: 380mW RMS per channel---That is LESS than my Magni 3, which is also INADEQUATE for 300 ohm cans. My HD600's are forgiving compared to my 800S. I'm installing Russian tubes, which will make the amp even more robust. Note on Schiit tube-based amps: they stated it themselves. They are NOT after the romantic, gooey Mullard/Conrad Johnson style tube sound. They are after tubes that are SS equivalent, but just a TOUCH of tube sound. Reference: Book "Schiit Happens"
@WordTech
@WordTech 5 лет назад
Yeah for sure, I agree on all these points, it's an amazing amp and surprises me just how accurate it is for a tube amp, really nice. Is the Asgard really that bad for high ohm cans though? I was planning to grab one of those sometime in the future to power an Audeze LCD2C that I plan on getting in a few months.

I recently bought a tube preamp for my system. I love the more holographic soundstage and instruments sound more realistic. However I find the added warmth of the bass takes away from the tight punch I get from solid state. Is there any way I can get the best of both worlds? Any advice is much appreciated.
@WordTech
@WordTech 4 года назад
Yeah it's always a bit of a toss up, there are some amps that claim to essentially give you both but in my experience it never works out that well. It's why I personally keep 2 around, one tube and one solid state, depending on what I am listening to and what headphones I have. What price range are you thinking though?

I think the Darkvoice 336 is more tubey than this one, because its cheaper and tubes are meant to distort anyway.
@WordTech
@WordTech 6 лет назад
While there is truth to that, and I haven't personally listened to it. The big thing about the Valhalla is it's ability to drive almost anything, even some planar magnetics will work with it which is unheard of for tubes. But for sure, tubes are just a wonderful thing either way.

Magic happened to my Valhalla when I rolled the V1 tubes to early 70s Reflector 6N23P silver shield. No other tubes that I tried come even close. I've paired my Valhalla with planars and hd650, they sounded just fine. I'll take a tube amp over that of a solid state any day.

It is Schiit. In a good way! Sorry, that was a shallow post, and your review deserves better. I stayed away from their (Schiit) products because of the name. I thought, and still think, it is childish. But they make good stuff. In particular, I could not find, not that it doesn't exist, an all tube amp that would compete with the Valhalla 2. I love it, and my Sennheiser HD600s love it. And I agree; this thing is beautiful. And on a stupid tangent; I love the glowey tube effect. And it warms up my room. literally. I am running this through the Schiit (I am slowly learning to embrace that word) USB to a JDS Labs (I can say that and type that with a straight face) OL DAC. Bam!

I bought a Schiit LYR 2 amp and recommended friends to look at Schiit mainly because of the name. I love how they don't take themselves seriously. The problem with the audio community is that it can be so snobby at times and newbies will feel intimidated. I felt intimidated when I first got into this hobby.
@scottlowell493
@scottlowell493 5 лет назад
The emotiva and woo audio TRY to compete and fanboi's love them, but they are both toys compared to the power of the valhalla. I recommend you get "Schiit happens" the bio of Schiit audio. You will have newfound respect for these master engineers formerly of Muse. They build the andromeda and other amps that could drive the 2 ohm apogee scintilla. They are rebels and changed the headphone world, and made a new audio buisiness paradigm with thier giant-killing products.

How does the Valhalla 2 sound different than a solid state amp like schiit magni/jds atom on Sennheiser hd650/6xx ? I read that Valhalla 2 is quite solid state sounding(and not the syrupy sound). So what changes exactly does it bring as compared to the solid state amp ?
@WordTech
@WordTech 2 года назад
Comparing it to my FiiO K5 Pro, I'd say the Valhalla is more distorted as one would expect, since it's tube based. But it's not as distorted or muddy as other tube amps, it's a nice blend actually. I for one tend to prefer more accurate sound so I actually use my K5 Pro more often than the Valhalla (part of that also comes from me using Planar's a lot of times and those aren't so good on the Valhalla IMO). But this is still a very solid amp from Schiit and honestly I might put my K5 Pro at work and grab an Asgard or something else fully solid state from Schiit.

Why not planar? lcd 2 have 70ohm, can you just use the hi gain at this point if you need more power?

Using my planars on it is a bit difficult, have to crank the volume and the bass still doesn't keep up like it does with a solid state amplifier.

I have a bunch of dynamic headphones from Sennheiser, Grado, Sony, Koss, and this does an excellent job on them all. I have not tried them on planars, but I can’t recommend it enough for dynamics. It does get hot enough to fry an egg though, but hey, you don’t have to turn on your stove. I have done some tube rolling, which is always fun.
@WordTech
@WordTech 6 лет назад
Very nice! Yeah for Dynamics this beauty is really awesome. I have some planars that it can kinda run, but they just don't sound as good on a tube amp like this so I use my solid state amp for that. Sure does get hot though lol.

Would this be a good amp for movie soundtracks, scores, smooth-contemporary jazz (like SXM: watercolors), and seventies music?
@WordTech
@WordTech 3 года назад
I would say so yes, tubes can be great for that kind of music. I personally have come to enjoy solid state amps more but I listen mostly to electronic music and some orchestral stuff which benefit from the higher accuracy of solid state. I won't ever go without a tube amp around though, still love their unique soudns.

Absolutely, it should sound excellent with those headphones! Just keep in mind if you're using this for anything that requires super high accuracy (editing audio from a video for example) a solid state amp would make more sense than a tube amp. But tube amps sound better for music and the like IMO.

Good timing I actually just bought a pair of HE400is. Anyway, it will but it's definitely near it's limit, it's not really built for planar magnetics.
