I’m viewing this episode in 2024. Your observations & musings align with my V2 experiences. Curious to see what its replacement will be!

These have been out of stock for months now. Can't wait to get my hands on this amp.

I prefer the V2 with warmer tubes than stock. Schiit audio doesn't design their tube products to be too tubey sounding out of the box. They sound on the safe, cool side, just a step from ss. Tubes like sylvania, EH, mullard and others warm the character up significantly. Audio bliss through high impedance cans.

I don't know I've heard that the Valhalla two as good a headphone amplifier as it is it also makes a fantastic preamplifier. The only negative of course is it's one input
@daver2067

The DAC they sell (MODI) has 3 different inputs, so for another 100.00 that gives you some options. I think used together would be a match made in heaven

100% on the visual experience (as long as it sounds good) being important and also why I love the tubes. Not sure if it’s a noise thing, but I do wish they added some leds like some of the crap Chinese models. While the tubes glow, some other Chinese brands have added orange/blue leds to the mix under the tube which really bring out the ambiance. Again, more electronic components usually means more noise, but the whole visual aspect of the device counts to me too. I like the ones with the wood panels too, visually though the brand that does that style for a reasonable price (Rockville) kinda sucks. Dayton makes a quad for about 1/3 the price but it’s a hybrid with a transformer. I own the Douk P1 (duel tube hybrid) and it’s noisey as hell, especially for BT/USB, but on RCA as well. Not when playing as much but it’s uncomfortable noise when nothing is playing. I think some of it has to do with the crap AC adapter, because after I put a ferrite bead on the cord and it was slightly better. Others have reported replacing the transformer altogether solves a lot of the problem, but the box certainly has a grounding issue because if you hold the metal box, most of the noise goes away. How does this product (USA made begin a plus for it) do with noise? Does it have a grounding issue too? Easiest way to check is pick up the entire unit while you’re listening to nothing but with the unit on and headphones attached; If it’s noisy, just sitting there on a table, but when you pick it up, the noise gets less or goes away altogether, it’s a grounding issue. It’s best to put a ferrite bead on any wine going into/out of these things anyway, given that they’re usually around a lot of other electronics like a Wi-Fi tower or computer equipment, which adds noise. The mesh WiFi network I have at home is the worst for audio equipment and adds a crap load of very noticeable and consistent pattern noise. On the HF ham radio I have, if I don’t unplug the WiFi, I get a tick-tick-tick and a fixed interval/frequency over almost every HF band which makes coms incredibly bad to impossible if I run the unit with the WiFi tower anywhere near the radio. The biggest problem I’m seeing with the Chinese ones is noise and mostly from grounding. Hope this one does better as it’s on my shopping list. Thanks for the review.

Have you tried other pre-amps with the crown? Did the Valhalla compare nicely? Looking at the schiit headphone amps with pre's as a basic way to play with tubes on my stereo rig.

For a bit I used a Crown with the Valhalla on my desk setup. Worked quite well. However, I have not tried the Valhalla in my main system. I might give that a try just to see.

Can this be used with a Cayin A-88T tube integrated amp? I have the Puffin DSP pre amp, but I want to use pure tube sound and not digital or solid state...
@dannytran173

Hey how is this unit as a preamp? I am trying to save some money on a preamp and since this is a headphone amp and pre amp in one I am interested. Going to buy the Schiit Vidar to pair it with it but just wanted to see how it was doing in your system as a preamp and if you ever wanted to upgrade from it.
@timbathras2660
@timbathras2660 3 года назад
This is a very capable pre-amp. I had it hooked to a Vidar for a bit and it worked great. As long as you don’t mind not having a remote, and you’ve only got one source (or another switch) you can’t go wrong. Also of note, the gain switch also affects the pre-out, and you’ll want that on Low when using it to run the Vidar to keep the noise floor down.

could I essentially use this as a tube buffer from a digital source into a set of active speakers? Just to pull in some warmth.
@timbathras2660
@timbathras2660 3 года назад
Yes - I might suggest you set your digital source to max or fixed volume and use the dial on the Valhalla to adjust the volume. It is possible to set the dial on the Valhalla to a “fixed” spot (like 75% or something) and then use digital volume adjust, but at lower volumes, you may end up with a higher noise floor. You’d just have to experiment.
@dungeonlord1985
@dungeonlord1985 5 месяцев назад
I asked shciit directly this as well. I run my turntable into a digital mixer and out into active speakers and would also like to introduce some "tube warmth" into the mix. They said that that would definitely work.

HI, would you say Vali is not even listenable? If I can afford Vali, thinking should I spend $200 more to get the Valhalla ? My birthday is coming, with some hints here and there, I might get a groupfund. :D I listen to many pop songs -- really love listening to drum beat, including deep base sounds like 'Every breath you take' beginning part. :D Hope you can give me some suggestions. Thanks.
@timbathras2660
@timbathras2660 3 года назад
Hi Amy - the Vali 2 is still a very capable amp; I had one for a while and enjoyed it. I would say it’s really going to depend on what headphones you will be using. The Valhalla is really going to want high impedance headphones (300 ohms or greater) to really get the best out of it. The Vali is less picky. Given the music you’re mentioning, and the fact that “tube rolling” is far cheaper to do on the Vali should you want to play around with different tubes, you may want to lean towards the Vali.

I normally use 'Vmoda M100' headphone. But since I couldn't find it for now, I use my '36 years old' Bose bookshelf speakers (30 watts max printed on the back) with the 'Biggermouth A1' two 6J6 tubes and Macbook Pro. I am very pleased to tell the difference! My humble hope is to upgrade the pre-amp so it might be able to make the Bose old dog sound even better? (without burning it down, I hope). Thank you again. Appreciate your suggestion. (and I realized that all my so called equipments are really not to any standard, :D just trying to surf through the wave while my cub is going to his grad school... paddling , wish I have more $ to spend in sound equipments.)

@RetroBleck 3 года назад
@@amywang4442 I had a pair of Vmoda M100s for years and I can say without a doubt they don't sound "better" than Sennheiser 6xx/650 in any way. All frequencies are more muddled and noisy, and the bass is too heavy. You'll really benefit from tube amps and dacs/amps in general more if you pick up a pair of those headphones.
@amywang4442
@amywang4442 3 года назад
@@RetroBleck Hmmm, I bought Valhalla 2 just weeks ago. Now I am using Sony WH-1000XM4, maybe I should invest in Sennheiser. I go crazy in the bass area and I believe it might distort the music. Hope Sennheiser delivers good bass as well. :)

Hey Tim, what DAC were you using to drive your Valhalla?
@timbathras2660

Boy, I don’t actually remember exactly, but it was most likely whatever the current Modi (non multibit) was at the time. The Modius would be a great pair with this, but it wasn’t released yet when I did this review.

Tim do you recommend the Freya s with maggies
@timbathras2660
@timbathras2660 4 года назад
Really depends on both your amplification and your tastes. If there is any chance you’ll want to play with tubes and the price difference isn’t a deal breaker, I’d say go with the Freya+ since it also has the solid state buffer mode. But, if tubes aren’t your thing or your budget tops out with the S, it’ll serve you well. The preamp makes far less difference with maggies than the power amp does.

Tim Bathras great info thanks. I have a Peachtree nova with 80watts and crown with 350 powering lrs speakers. Any amp recommendation? I’m new and want to try tubes but seek clarity and staging so not sure my direction.
@timbathras2660
@timbathras2660 4 года назад
@@mrchinaski4125 What power amp to use relies heavily on what type of music you listen to and how loud (and the size of your room). Honestly, you should try with the amps you already have, listen with them for a while. You might find you already have what you need.
@mrchinaski4125
@mrchinaski4125 4 года назад
Tim Bathras thanks I’m finding my crown amp is great. Also the Peachtree is slightly more dynamic. I’m listening to all types of music at moderate levels. Will a preamp give more clarity and sound stage? Thinking Freya or saga.
