Thank you for this video. It clarifies a lot of questions I had about myself. I had been diagnosed with schizophreniform disorder in my 20's. About 6 years later I was diagnosed with schizoaffective depressive type.
Hello! I am making a discord server that will have psychiatric interviews and people's personal experience with mental illness, I will list every disorder in the DSM there, could you please tell me what order the disorder catagories go? Only if you can haha :)
Hey, Josan! You rock! I love that you are bringing more awareness to mental illness! So, I am following the DSM-5 from front to back. I am on schizophrenia, next. Then, schizoaffective disorder, substance/medication-induced psychotic disorder, psychotic disorder due to another medical condition, catatonia, and then I will move to bipolar and related disorders. There should be some type of list of the DSM-5 and the disorders. This is the way I will be putting out the videos. I get done teaching in 8 days...so I will be putting in 40 hours a week to the videos starting in 8 days. :) My podcast is "On My Last Neuron" on Spotify, which is also interviews of people with different disorders. Right now, I am covering the Johnny Depp trial and talking about Borderline Personality Disorder and Histrionic Personality Disorder. :)
My son was recently diagnosed with schizophreniform Disorder and he is on medication and it seems to be Controlling his symptoms.... Is the time period after six months of being on medication + being asymptomatic....will he fall into the 1/3. Or....If he's been on the medication for six plus months and symptomatic, Then will the diagnosis be schizophrenia?
I have a question doc. These symptoms which will be distressing to the patient and their caregivers will need treatment. So won't treatment stand in the way of a Schizophrenia diagnosis as symptoms will seem to have been their for only a short duration, which was cut short by treatment. And also, how long is antipsychotic treatment for both Brief Psychotic Disorder and Schizophreniform Disorder? Kind regards Doc
Great question! It does depend upon how often the individual is delusions and hallucinations. This tends to be more situational. Antipsychotics definitely have bad side effects (in some circumstances) so they want to be careful about who gets them. With Brief Psychotic Disorder, the patient is going to be watched whereas there is a higher chance of being medicated with Schizophreniform Disorder. I hope this helps! :)
Thank you so much Dr kerris!.. yes it's very helpful. Much appreciated. Since Schizophrenia treatment with antipsychotics is said to be lifelong, how long can someone be on antipsychotics when diagnosed with Schizophreniform Disorder? My concern is, won't treatment cut short the duration of symptoms for you to make a solid diagnosis of Schizophrenia? Or do we have to leave the symptoms unmanaged to see how long they can last so that a firm diagnosis is made at 6 months. I am thinking if treatment is initiated early during a situational incident where one has psychotic symptoms, then the symptoms would be cut short and this undiagnosed schizophrenic client will forever have a brief psychotic Disorder/Schizophreniform Disorder diagnosis. Kindly help me clear this wrong thinking I have
I noticed you stated the dr should make sure the symptoms are not a result of a drug & also to be specify whether the symptoms showed up in the first 4 weeks.. what do these factors change? If these symptoms occurred 3 months after the first change in behavior, what other diagnoses should be considered?
There are different stages of schizophrenia and they depend upon how many and how long the symptoms are experienced. If you go to the video page of Dr. Kerris Dillon, they are all in order. I hope this helps.
It definitely could be. Have you ever seen Awakenings? It is an old movie that has Robin Williams in it. They used L-Dopa to wake patients out of catatonic states, but the side effects were so detrimental, they had to stop using it.
