SCHOLZ: "Speed and quality are crucial!" Chancellor visits Federal Office for Migration!
Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) has promised efforts by the Federal Government to improve the return of asylum seekers in the course of the so-called Dublin procedure. "It must be the case that we achieve a change in practice," said Scholz during a visit to the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (Bamf) in Nuremberg. He was in "ongoing talks" with his counterparts in several European countries.
Previously, employees of the Federal Office had expressed their dissatisfaction with the current practice to the Chancellor. Some countries, including Italy, are currently not accepting any or only a small number of refugees, although they would be obliged to do so under the Dublin Agreement. According to the Dublin Regulation, only one EU member state is responsible for examining and processing asylum applications.
The number of asylum applications in Germany has fallen again this year, albeit still at a high level. From January to June, 121,000 applications for asylum were made - almost 20 percent fewer than in the same period last year. Most came from the three main countries of origin Syria, Afghanistan and Turkey.
Decisions have already been made on over 150,000 applications this year. The protection rate was 47 percent. A total of 351,000 initial applications were submitted last year. The Federal Office currently has 8,000 employees and is equipped to deal with 230,000 applications. A temporary increase of 1,000 people was already approved in the last budget. The record number of applications dates back to 2016 with 745,000 as a result of the civil war in Syria.
