BIO
I was born August of 1995 in Ohio, which is also where I live today. I am finishing up my under grad mechanical engineering degree at Ohio University (Athens, OH). I have been a professional open-format club / mobile DJ since 2012. Pretty important to explain pricing breakdown. As a teacher who has to sit through these DJ interviews with other colleagues and parents, the average consumer has no idea at how much DJs are worth.

so very true, as a D.J. i know that many people think a good D.J. with microphones, lights lazers and good music for hours and hours is like a 75$ dollar day . NO WAY! when they see the gravity of the work involved and the services provided as compared to a SUB PAR bargain basement D.J {Ghetto} then thats when the valuye becomes evident. you truly get what you pay for with D.J.'s if they are professional's and show up early and take the time to set up and doa good job and pay attention and make people smile, laugh, cry and feel good.. and create unforgetable memories . NOW THATS WHAT YOUR PAYING FOR! :)

MR Rick Webb, you come through again and help us out a lot. This pricing sheet was really useful. I been asked to do my local schools prom next year and I had no idea how to price for schools. This was a very informational video and I have created something similar to this to get out to schools so I can grow like you and hopefully do a multi empire as an entertainer.

Great stuff! Thank you! I work for a company that does mostly weddings. When a Sweet 16, Prom, School Dance, or Graduation Party comes in, I DJ them as I am up on the current music (more than the other fellows) and love doing these types of events. I want to get into more schools if possible, but my boss (and I) really need to hit that market hard.

the other day I went to go meet with the ASB of a local High School because they wanted to hire me to do their Homecoming dance, their budget was $250 for 3 hours. I was like WTF? 3 hours of djing plus 2 hours for set up and 2 hours for breakdown = 7 hour gig. So I declined.

WOW ! I Was just told today by a Junior high school that 1200 dollars for a 3 hour dance was "out of their budget" but they were asking for a full light show,a large audio system (they have a huge gymnasium) and they wanted me there 2 hours early to set up ! AND MC !

I was just informed a school I gig for hired a DJ for prom in 8 months away for $700 which includes a photo booth setup. It is hard to compete with low ballers when the clients dont really care about quality.

There are plenty more schools to get. And for reference those low baller schools come around a few years down the road. Students attend each others dances and word spreads. That's how I took over every school in my region in Ohio. Focused on the ones willing to pay and the rest came around.

My first gig I charged $200 for 3 hours and 50 people. All I had was to Mackie thumb 15s. And then I did my own social club formals for $150. Keep in mind I am a beginner.

I have a similar approach with my wedding flyer, but theres a different strategy done with weddings. More of a cheap price to get you in the door then upsale you after the fact to get you to the price I want to have.

As a consumer...I don't care what your costs are. I don't want the car dealership explaining their costs so they can get to 'value' their $100/hour labor vs $75 at the local repair shop. Explain clean music, insurance, background clearances...that has value to them. I get the crowd differences..i've done 25 kids at one dance and the next week 450 kids. But a 3 hour dance is different than an 8 hour prom. i've seen the profit idea before. $10 is typical price here, proms much closer to $100 but that includes dinner and entertainment. Unfortunately there are many folks that are parents that have DJ equipment and believe they can do school dances for next to nothing 'to help out the school'. What they don't realize is crap DJs mean the next dance will have crap attendance. How to get them to change their mind on that I've yet to figure out.

People pay top money for cakes, party arrangement,fancy foods, etc.etc. but without music they wont have an unforgettable time all they will have is a dinner gathering not a party so that being said MUSIC (DJ) is the most important piece in any event and ahould not be taken lightly .again without a dj all you have is a gathering so charge ! Dj Rick Web, First Thank You for responding to my comment, The point I'm making is when did it become ok to charge so much for playing Music? Most DJs are not Oliver Helden, The Chainsmokers, Avicii, or any festival Dj! I can only believe that you must live in an area where Djs are scarce and not much competition? I live in Los Angeles and everyone and the other nephew is a Dj so there is MAJOR undercutting! But Good Luck and keep busy.

I don't give two craps what others charge cus most are under charging. Ticket price x students equals budget. I need at least 40% of that budget. I rarely do a school dance for less than a grand

I want to do this but I don't have a business license nor do I know if I need one or not. The problem I am having is learning how to market myself and how I should go about doing everything. I honestly don't even know how much to charge for my area. I did a winter formal last night and only charged $140 for the entire night (4-hour dance at $35/h +1 setup breakdown). I currently have over 3.7k worth of equipment and I know I should be making well more than that per gig. Please let me know if you have any pointers you want to give me or if anyone else who reads this wants to give me any suggestions.

Yes! I watched all of it. It is a very informational video and I did learn a lot from it. I am trying to make a page on Facebook and a flyer but Facebook won't let me create a page. Other than that, the only problem I am having is knowing how much I should charge. I am starting out with a little less than 3 years of experience. I don't want to charge so much to where I am not booked just for the price, yet I don't want to charge so little to where I am marketed as a "cheap DJ." There aren't many DJs in my area that I know of and most don't have an online presence so I can ask them how much they charge to get a baseline in my area.

You can be a sole proprietorship as long as you're okay with unlimited liability (if your speaker falls on someone and they sue, all your personal assets are fair game).

Hi Rick, I've decided to get 2 SRX 815P and my brother is going to get an PRX 818XLFW. The mixer I have planned to buy only has one RCA output. So what I'm planning on doing is running RCA to dual Male XLR from Mixer to Sub and using the 2 Thru outputs for Female to dual Male XLR cable to the tops. Only problem is I can't find any 1 Female to 2 Male XLR cables pass 3ft anywhere. You have any Websites for cables I can check out?

@@DJRickWeb In my region, for a party with 300+ it goes from €1500 to €2500 for the equipment and light jockey only. The good and well know dj's (the ones that attract people) start from €600 (for about 6 hours, only bring and playing music, nothing else). Wedding partys goes for €600+ for the evening party. (equipment & dj, +/-4 hours playing. No mc/planner things. Just that) And the good local dj's you have to book 2 years in advance. If you pay less, it is always crap, but more isn't always better. Note that (music) licencing fees here are always in the price of the venue for private party's like weddings, and for the organisation for non private party's. The must have paid that en insurance in advance and have the papers. Otherwise there's simply no party.

The thing is they tend to retain their look since the carpet is more durable since the carpet doesn't scratch like the new plastic. I own both types and my carpeted Pevey TL5s look mint even though I bought them in the 90s and I never even used cases or covers for them. So there is at least one benefit to the carpet considering I don't know how you'd repair any kind of mark or scratch on the newer style of plastic speaker.

What's the matter with carpet speakers yeah they're old I still use them I have 215 towers with ev if you don't know ev stands for electronic voice probably one of the best speakers out there jbl's are good and 4 18 Ev Subs also carpet but they'll blow them jvc's U got or jbl's out of the water oh and I'm using two QSC 3000 watt amps yeah I know it's more convenient to have powered speakers and easy to carry and you don't need a rack and all that for your amps equs you know but there's nothing wrong with the old carpet speakers and for my controller I got a Denon 6000 MC which is also better than the Pioneer controller you're using not trying to talk bad about you or nothing but I didn't like the way you talk about carpet speakers my speakers cost $10,000 but I like watching your videos I'm also a DJ I've been doing it since I was 15 I am 44 I have respect I watch some of your RU-vid videos you have a nice set-up good equipment good lights just upset me when you said carpet speakers

Dj Rick Webb, I just watched your video on Price Breakdowns! It's my opinion that charging a client; School, Bride, or Private Events for set-up time, travel time, breakdown time even charge for music, is so pretentious! Maybe there are no other DJs in your area that your potential clients can base your costs on? I don't know anyone that gets paid to travel to work? or a mechanic that charges for his tool purchases! Good Luck but I think your overpriced.

This practice was only for schools with cheap unrealistic budgets. Like 300 for a 3 hour dance. They dont get it when you say 2 grand.

Really?...I love your channel and videos but this video didn't help at all...it would have helped to give some kind of percentage based on wedding prices in your area...that way it gives you an idea...like for instance if you charge $1200 for a wedding you should charge 60% less for a school or something

Its explaining to the client that wants a 300 dollar dj that they won't be able to rent the gear to do it themselves for that.
