My adult son arrived in Switzerland with his family two months ago. The three boys, ages 8, 11 and 13, are struggling terribly with the language issues. They are unable to follow what is being taught in class and can not interpret the homework assignment instructions. My son and his wife are very worried about them. They were good students in New Zealand and now they dread going to school. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

kathleen lovett I live in Switzerland and when I was in primary school one of my classmates (from Tibet) had a friend who just came a short while ago and helped her out with German (in the German part we must speak German instead of Swiss German). Others I know first went to this special class and later a normal class, however lost a year. I think it comes with time. Friends certainly help. My cousins moved to the French part of Switzerland at the beginning of primary school. Before that all the movies they watched and books etc were in French. A friend came from the Ukraine at the age of 7, he’s finishing Highschool this year and will go to university soon. So it worked in the long run. For short: they need an environment with the new languages. We are used to foreigners so they can integrate rather easily I think.

Hi. We are from India. Our daughter knows only English language. Is it possible to get her admission in public school at age 14 with knowledge of English language only? How can she prepare for studies in Swiss public school? Is there any Swiss public school where teaching medium is English?

Hello Liliana, if you are already living in Switzerland (and you are registered in a place) before you children start school you don't have do anything: your children will be automatically assigned to a school, usually the one closest to where you live, and you will receive a letter a few months before they are due to start (August in most Cantons) with all the details. If you are moving to Switzerland during the school year, it depends on where you are from and which canton you will be living in. I suggest, as soon as you have an idea of where you will be living contact the local authorities (gemeinde/mairie) and they will tell you whom you have to talk to. (Younger children are often assigned to a class just based on their age but for older children it might be useful to have previous school records)

many tnx for reply, 💓💓💓 want to know if vaccinatin paper needed? currently I live in Spain and next year I want to move there 💓 And collecting all the info💓💓💓
@welcometoswitzerland3233
@welcometoswitzerland3233 5 лет назад
@@lilianamaxim4481 To my knowledge vaccinations papers are not required by the schools (maybe with the exception of canton Ticino, but I am not sure). However, it is a useful document to have, I think the pediatrician will probably ask for it.... Also in some cantons, older kids are offered vaccination through the school (only if you want), in this case they will have to bring their vaccination booklet to school. In any case requirements might change a lot from canton to canton, so in your collection look specifically for information relevant to where you are planning to move to.

6 the best but 5 is already quite good the Matura, (meaning Highschool to go to university, )is given without further distinction of grade. Meaning 4 and 6 both mean you can attend university. 4.5 is usually the average and 5 or higher good, 6 is rarely given. Some have none and others maybe 1 in their best subject.

Hello, thank you for sharing this video. I would like to ask the next question. Me and my kids moving to Switzerland in a couple months. They are 12 and 13 y.o. Could they use free language training in public local school in order to take the relevant language level, and after that start to study in classes. If exists the age limitation for expat kids to take free language lessons in public schools?
