Schroth Method Explained

My name is Dr. Houlihan and I am a Schroth certified practitioner- I work with people who have scoliosis every day. In this video, I talk about what exactly the Schroth method is, why it is the gold standard in non-surgical treatment, and why there is no "one-size-fits-all" option for patients. It is a complex and nuanced method that requires the expertise of a certified practitioner to learn exercises for correcting scoliosis IN 3 DIMENSIONS (very important) and how you can apply the same concepts to everything you do.

Just one more question(always just one more), how important is the breathing during the throughout-the-day postural correction?
@DrHoulihan
@DrHoulihan 9 месяцев назад
It's hard to quantify, but it should have a synergistic effect in making the posture correction easier and more effective

I have scoliosis and I feel my upper left muscles are tight especially when I do any pull exercises. Can this method fix it? And I have heard that you should do the given exercises for your whole life is that true? I mean the scroth exercises.
@DrHoulihan
@DrHoulihan 10 месяцев назад
Yes and yes to both questions
@bismarkbizmark5639
@bismarkbizmark5639 11 месяцев назад
So i've just went through a course of scroth, can't say my muscles feel better yet but i'm sticking at it. And i was wondering how the specific exercises might work together with muscle activation throughout the day to achieve benefit. Like some exercises involve very specific positions, with props and holding an arm this way or leg that way and what not, and these poses are going to be unreproduceable throughout the day during normal activities. But these exercises might be only 10m per each per day? So i think what doesn't quite make sense to me is how just a few minutes of these exercises can contribute to any meaningful positive change, since unless i'm consciously shifting my rib cage over my spine/torso just defaults back to its ordinary position. It's hard to see how the exercises might be having any effect.
@DrHoulihan
@DrHoulihan 11 месяцев назад
First, if you were my patient, I would likely prescribe more than 10 minutes per day of those positional exercises. Second, if you were my patient, I would say you absolutely should be consciously correcting your posture throughout the day. The positional exercises are preparation for your body to execute your posture corrections in your daily routine, whatever that looks like for you
@bismarkbizmark5639
@bismarkbizmark5639 11 месяцев назад
@@DrHoulihan Well it's about 10 minutes per exercise/position, not counting set up, so about 30m a day. But thanks for the response. That makes sense.

Hi there just one question. I have a scoliotic spinal assymetry (thoracic spine 7.9 degrees and lumbar spine 9.32 degrees) I am 20 years old male. Can Schroth therapy reduce my curve and maybe bring it down to zero degrees or at least improve my posture to someone with a 0 degree spine?
@DrHoulihan
@DrHoulihan 11 месяцев назад
It's possible with a curve that small that you could get to 0, yes. Although the degree of curve you're talking about is not terribly uncommon, and I wouldn't expect it to cause you a tremendous amount of discomfort
@ddomenike
@ddomenike 11 месяцев назад
@@DrHoulihan Thank you so much for your answer! So even if I’m fully grown out, I may achieve up to 9 degrees improvement, right? Do you have any cases where it was successful for people to reduce it by up top 10 degrees after skeletal maturity?
@DrHoulihan
@DrHoulihan 11 месяцев назад
@ddomenike As a general rule, the smaller the curve is, the easier it is to reduce. However, someone who is skeletally mature with < 10 degree curve is not someone I would initiate therapy on, as it is usually not required, so I can not say that I personally have seen it happen

Actually, the original Schroth is ISST-Schroth. There is newly developed schroth, called PSSE-Schroth, plus best Practice Schroth. Can you sometime to summarise these different Schroth?
@DrHoulihan
@DrHoulihan 11 месяцев назад
According to their website, ISST was founded in 2016. That organization is another branch on the tree that all originated from Katherina Schroth back in the 1920s. PSSE stands for physiotherapeutic scoliosis specific exercise, which is a general term used to describe exercises as they relate to scoliosis rather than describing a specific institution. The Schroth Best Practice Program was founded by the grandson of Katherina Schroth, Dr. Weiss, which could certainly be considered a program with the most direct lineage to the origination of the method.
@Coumei2009
@Coumei2009 9 месяцев назад
When I said that ISST is the original is not based on the time but the instructors. The two founders of ISST were instructors for Schroth school for long time. In fact, in the past, it was the founders who introduced Schroth to the world, so ISST schroth is the same as Schroth school. PSSE-Schroth is the latest developed branch from Greece. Its training is very active globally. Best practice Schroth probably is the most simplified of "Schroth". It's generally used in conjunction with brace.

Hey doctor thanks for the Video, Doctor, I have a 15 year old sister who has a scoliosis with 25 angle curvature, and my mom is worried about how she will take her backpack to the school. So doctor could you please give me some advices about carrying a backpack while going to school, thanks doctor ✨
@DrHoulihan
@DrHoulihan 11 месяцев назад
Keep the straps tight and symmetrical with the weight in close to her body and not hanging too low. Pack items in bag symmetrically if possible

Doctor, do you think it's a good idea to buy a brace for her at this age?And last question, doctor, do you recommend any exercise that she should do to prevent increasing her angle of curvature? Thanks in advance doctor
@DrHoulihan
@DrHoulihan 11 месяцев назад
@@ahmddmg3076 The brace depends on if she is skeletally mature or not, and Schroth exercises can certainly help prevent progression

@DrHoulihan

Yes, but probably not below the surgical threshold. It can definitely help make for an easier surgery and easier recovery though

@@DrHoulihan theres a youtube video where there was a Dr calked loren fisherman and he did an expirement where he gave himself a 40 degree scoliosis curve and after doing the side plank for 4 months on one side and after that he did the same thing but on the opposite side and it went away do you think it would be possible to really reduce the curve if it was possible to combine it with the schroth method. im just really curious because i want to be able to atleast try something so i dont have to get surgery. (i have nueromuscular scoliosis)
@DrHoulihan
@DrHoulihan 9 месяцев назад
@bluerawfish2766 Neuromuscular has different underlying mechanisms, the same treatments we apply to adolescent idiopathic may not work the same. You are welcome to try schroth and or bracing to address it, but the research tells us that it is unlikely the curve will reduce below the surgical threshold. It's always your choice whether or not to do surgery regardless of your Cobb angle as long as you understand the implications either way
