This is symphony No. 8 in B minor, D 759 widely known as the Unfinished Symphony ("Unvollendete" in German). It sometimes renumbered as Symphony No. 7 according to the revised Deutsch catalogue and the Neue Schubert-Ausgabe, but the original No. 7 is a four-movement symphony in E major (D 729) drafted by Schubert in 1821.

No longer. As to what *used* to be called No.7: "Although the work (which comprises about 1350 bars) is structurally complete, Schubert only orchestrated the slow introduction and the first 110 bars of the first movement." Less than ten percent of it is the work of Schubert. That is why - several decades ago - it was dropped from the revised catalog of his works. His symphonies are now officially recognized as being eight in number. 🐧 Among others, Herbert Blomstedt and Marek Janowski accept and endorse the new numbering system. 🐧

Wundervolles Werk, wundervolle Interpretation. Berührend und beeindruckend. Auch wenn diese Sinfonie als" Unvollendete" in die Musikgeschichte eingegangen ist, ist sie vollkommen!

Echt vollendete Aufführung dieses unvollendeten Meisterwerks mit gut harmonisierten und perfekt synchronisierten Töne aller Instrumente. Der zweite Satz klingt fast himmlisch. Der unvergleichliche Dirigent leitet das ausgezeichnete Orchester im gut phrasierten Tempo mit effektiv kontrollierter Dynamik. Einfach wunderschön!

エストラーダ氏の新しい解釈が新鮮です。今までの悲劇的な未完成ではなく、より本来のシューベルトの「交響曲」のフォルムを大切に表現しようとした、大変に新しい未完成の誕生。第一楽章の最後をより、原譜に近づけました。今の楽譜は勘違いに勘違いを重ねた末のアーティキュレーションは良く知られた事ですが、氏はよりフォルムを重視した演奏に変更。第二楽章も三拍子の舞曲風な形まで導入している。いたずらに悲劇性を出さない新しくまた美しい交響曲にしています。素晴らしい！

私の青春時代はレコードの時代で、こんなに音が多彩ではなかったからシューベルトの天分を動画で見れることはこの上ない喜びです。おそらく中学校以来「未完成」は聞かなかった。このオーケストラで今まで知らなかったシューベルトの天才が見れて感動しました。

Also der Streit, ob 7. oder 8. liest sich bei wikipedia so: Das Werk trägt nach aktuellem Stand der Forschung in der Reihe von Schuberts Sinfonien die Nr. 7. Dies war nicht immer so: zunächst wurde die Sinfonie als Nr. 8 gezählt, da zu diesem Zeitpunkt die später entstandene Große Sinfonie in C-Dur bereits als Nr. 7 veröffentlicht war. Erst die neueste Auflage des Deutsch-Verzeichnisses (herausgegeben von der Editionsleitung der Neuen Schubert-Ausgabe und Werner Aderhold stellte 1978 die chronologische Reihenfolge der Nummerierung wieder her. Auf vielen CD-Veröffentlichungen, insbesondere aus dem angelsächsischen Sprachraum, trägt sie bis heute die Nr. 8, da man dort die gleichfalls nicht fertiggestellte E-Dur-Sinfonie D 729 als 7. zählt.

Die Umnummerierung brachte bloß eine unnötige Konfusion. Neuste Forschung hin oder her, die althergebrachte Nummerierung hätte man behalten sollen und nicht einem übersteigerten Korrektheitsdrang folgend ändern sollen.

One of Schubert's symphonies, No.7, was dropped from the list because it was a piano score orchestrated after his death. So, what was No.8 is now No.7, and No.9 is now No.8. The new numbering was put forth decades ago, but old habits are hard to break.

@@TheStockwell Yeah, the numbering of Schubert's works can get messy. Not just symphonies, but piano sonatas and string quartets as well. That's why I like the Deutsch catalogue.

@@joshscores3360 Agreed. Something I learned recently which shocked me: the catalog numbers of Bach's works. I assumed those famous BWV numbers had some connection to chronology. Nope. Bach's works were organised by genre and given sequential numbers within those categories. So, those BWV numbers rarely reflect when the works might've been composed. THAT was a big surprise to me. I had no idea. 😕

@@joshscores3360 . . . and they aren't. Now I finally understand that Bach didn't compose the sacred cantatas one after another - and then wrote the secular cantatas, one after another. I assumed the BWV numbers were organised the way the Koechel numbers put Mozart's work in chronological order - the way Beethoven's opus numbers work. Call me naive, but you'd think the cataloguing of Bach would've been handled the same way. Fortunately, there IS a chronological list of his compositions - and it's online. All of this came about when I was given the recent 100-disc set of Karl Richter's complete DG-Archive recordings. Have a great, safe, and musical year. ☺

people have debated Why Schubert left this symphony unfinished and have looked for the missing fragments. maybe he left it unfinished for a reason. maybe it's a metaphor of his life. It's his autobiography.

@@saschagrusche1573 that one of the greatest symphonies ever written was half done has been the subject of interest since I believe It was discovered by Robert Schumann. the symphony, like Schubert's life is but a fragment of what would have been possible had he lived longer. Still, what he left was a gift.

Indeed this is the unfinished symphony, opus "D 759", known more commonly as the 8th. But according to wikipedia ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Symphony_No._8_(Schubert) ) it's also sometimes numbered 7th in Germany. To add confusion, the symphony commonly known as 7th ("D 729") is also unfinished...

It should be called Nr 8, because it came before Nr 9, the Great C major. There was another unfinished symphony, Nr 7, written in 1820 or 1. There are fragments of that surviving.

even Schumann didn't understand why it wasn't finished. it's autobiographical as Schubert's life was unfinished. you can hear the anguish in the music but also the inspiration. Schumann remarked that this symphony "was at the same level" of Beethoven's greatest symphonies maybe even beyond Beethoven.

It is often renumbered the 7th- in accordance with the new Schubert edition which recognizes that the symphony normally referred to as no. 7 is incomplete. This isn't a typo.

I adore this conductor and this orchestra, the finest we have today; however, I am NOT a slavish idol worshipper, and must say that I think they miss the mark with this too fast and perfunctory run-through of one of Schubert's most glorious compositions. All one needs to do is listen to Furtwangler, Walter, Jochum, or Klemperer in order to see what is missing here.

Le Sinfonie di Schubert sono state rinumerate, Quindi è corretta la nuova numerazione che stabilisce l'Incompiuta non più come Ottava ma appunto come Settima.

Zu schnell, verhuscht und ohne Tiefe. - Ein kleines Ensemble und eine angeblich "historisch informierte" Spielweise heißen noch lange nicht, dass man automatisch auch den Wesensgehalt der Musik - das, was eigentlich hinter den Noten steht - erfasst. Da ist diese Aufnahme ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-xcf951o3HmU.html ein ganz anderes Kaliber als das, was uns da Maestro Orozco-Estrada als Schuberts Unvollendete präsentiert.
