In 1974, when I was a teenager, I heard Maestro Rostropovich play this in Carnegie Recital Hall in NYC. I sat in the front row, directly in front of him. The performance was sublime, majestic, and tender. Every note had a separate meaning, and they joined together in celebration of life’s sweetness. I was transported.
I heard his last concert in 1974 when I was 29, before his leaving the Soviet Union. He gives his last concert for his favorite listeners in Yerevan Armenia. He perfomance his programm so magically,I will never forget it.
Slava was short for Mstislav Ristropovich and Benjie was Benjamin Britten. They recorded this together and Haydn's wonderful cello concerto in C together
Inimitable communication between two old friends Rostropovich and Britten, makes for a performance that is intuitive, gentle and exact. The remastering brings it all to life with an immediate presence. Bravo! I can only applaud this project and thank you guys for making remarkable recordings available via this channel.
I can honestly say: the music lover inside of me cannot live without this recording. Ever since I was exposed to its multifacetted perfection back in the 90s. To this day I wonder: how can such a beautiful thing even exist.

Can’t get better than this, the musicality, the pace, the phrasing and the fragility that this music implies is all of it A gem, thank you for posting it David
Do not use word genius near Franz Schubert. They are just technical performers compared to the greatest composer in history. It’s like comparing some priest with Christ.
DIVINA INTERPRETAZIONE, UNICA, INIMITABILE, IRRAGGIUNGIBILE !!! DUE GIGANTESCHI MUSICISTI, FRA I PIÙ GRANDI INTERPRETI E MAESTRI DI TUTTI I TEMPI 🙏🙏💖💖🙏🙏💖💖 GRAZIE PER QUESTO MERAVIGLIOSO DONO. Cordiali saluti. Anna e Luigi
This is indeed a reference recording for this piece of work, and the only music that was prior unknown to me, but upon listening to the first time in a CD shop 20 years ago, and prompted me to immediately bought the CD. It was under Decca Legends and I still have the disk, although these days CD shops are becoming a thing of the past!
Can only echo comments below . . . best Arpeggione interpretation I have ever heard! Musical dialogue - give and take - always giving - at its very finest! SO WONDERFUL TO HAVE THIS AVAILABLE ON THE INTERNET!
Merci...!
The most deeply beautiful and moving performance of this gorgeous sonata that I have heard . It does my heart good. Sorely needed in these dark times. Thank you.
Perhaps the most delightful and satisfying recording of this work Britten's piano playing was a revelation when I first found this recording in our School of Music Library many years ago and of course -the Master cellist Rostropvich! Thank you for making it available.
This piece by Shubert and played by Masters of the Piano and Cello is truly Sublime...feeding pleasure to every crevice and corner of the mind...Just Wonderful!!
No version, none, has equaled, or even gotten to the level of this interpretation. It´s so precisely Schubertian, so deep that many many years will pass until anyone gets to fit this shoes, that if anyone gets to. Amazing Britten-Rostropovich. Thanks for posting!
This is one of the first records I ever bought (or maybe received) of cello music. I never could imagine mastering the instrument to this degree (nor did I), but I’m an Olympic-level appreciator of Maestro Rostropovich!
You need a transparent lens into the human soul in order to properly convey all the range of emotion and ideas in this piece. These two historical icons provide a great example in this recording of how this can be done.
There are so many interpretations that roll along at faster tempi and louder dynamics: popular favorites on the radio that ruined the sonata for me. In the hands of Britten and Rostropovich it's an entirely different piece and I'm so happy to hear this work played with such subtlety and understanding for the first time!
which is absoluletly believable according to those two exceptional artists of their century. i own this recording for almost 30 yrs and it is the best recording of Schuberts' "Arpeggione" i know so far. Rostro isn't reborn yet. Do you also know the legendary recording of the Schuberts' Piano Trio in B major from 1928 with Thibaud-Casals-Cortot?
Without presumption I think I have a certain confidence with Britten, Rostropovich and with all the enormous things they left us, but what I learned here is beautiful. Other things, precious things. Thanks.
Absolutely amazing performance of this marvelous masterpiece! One of my all time favorite recordings at all. Great sound remastering! Thank you so much for sharing! ❤️🙏
I was fortunate to attend one of his last performances in Kennedy Center, we ended up at the "quire" section for some mysterious reason; facing him and at the back of orchestra staring at him all along the performance as a conductor!
As a greatest songwriter, Schubert made about 700 songs for Vocal, Piano, Cello, Trios, and Quartets in addition to 9 symphonies and others. His short life was full of musics with romantic melodies.
Beautiful! One of my fondest memories to this day is my 1st ever orchestral concert as a child where maestro Rostroprovich conducted the US National Symphony. Many years later, l made the acquaintance of John Marcellus, who had been principle trombone of the National Symphony at the time, and even got to work with him a little bit. It's difficult to put into words how much l adore the great performances of Rostroprovich on cello from before l was even born! And all of that says nothing about my boundless adoration of Britten.
