Sections arranged by Katsaris are not in the sheet music. Franz Schubert (1797-1828) composed two complete movements of this symphony (D. 759) in 1822. Carl Reinecke (1824-1910) arranged it for solo piano in 1867. Cyprien Katsaris (1951) did a bit more work on it and released the recording on his Viennese Connections album released in 2009. It has also been included on the Sony Classical album "Piano Mascarade." This is the first movement.

Excellent rendition. The more I listen to Katsaris the more I understand that he is very hard to beat when it comes to piano transcriptions.

I used to play Beethoven s symphonies on the Yamaha synthesiser with excellent orchestra sound samples. It is by far better rendition even not in Liszt version, rather than any piano adaptation. Piano will be piano.

In the 60s, Columbia's Odyssey label put out a record of the usual two mvts plus the fragment of the scherzo ending abruptly in piano score. It may still be around somewhere.. This is interesting for itself. Well played.

I, as a brazillian, wonder how many people realise that Andre Matos used this section (not entirely) in the song "Unfinished Allegro", the song that comes right after the worldwide know Angra's "Carry On" (the second song of the album "Angels Cry", release in 1993). Andre was such an unique musician/pianista/singer. May The Lord confort his soul.

Katsaris likes to improvise it seems
@Pianifico
@Pianifico Год назад
Although he is a great improvisor, in this recording he did things similar to what he did with Beethoven's symphonies. He added notes for instruments which were left out of the original transcription. Also, on repeats he performs some passages differently (usually in a more difficult but closer to the original score way.) Thank you for watching!

@@Pianificoexactly! When I first played the Reinecke reduction I felt compelled to add similar “additions” because it felt more like the original orchestration and sound… But there is nobody like Katsaris… Godly voice leading.

This is not MIDI. It's a great compliment to Cyprien Katsaris that he does what may seem impossible. He is one of the very best at repeated notes and chords, which I've seen him do live in person. Also, grand pianos have a repetition lever that allows repeated notes and chords to be played faster than on an upright. Thank you for watching!

@klop4228 3 года назад
@@citizent6999 yeah, I know that I can do repetitions at that speed. I'll destroy my wrists if I do too many, because I've got terrible technique, but I know I can just about do it.
