SCHUMANN - Lebhaft from Konzertstück in F for Four Horns, Op. 86 - U.S. Marine Band

On March 11, 2018, the Marine Band presented a Living History program titled Marine Corps Women’s Reserve Band Tribute. The program told the story of the talented and adventurous women who served our country in a most unique and unprecedented manner. Author of the book Bands of Sisters: U.S. Women’s Military Bands During World War II, Dr. Jill Sullivan served as a guide through the personal accounts of those very women who blazed a trail for many to follow. The Marine Corps Women’s Reserve Band of Camp Lejeune was established under the watch of “The President’s Own” to support bond drives and was active during World War II from 1943-45. In 1944, the ensemble even sat in for one of the Marine Band’s popular “Dream Hour” broadcasts, a program that will be reenacted in its entirety as part of this concert. The performance took place in Schlesinger Concert Hall at Northern Virginia Community College in Alexandria, Va. Conducted by Capt. Michelle A. Rakers.

Wonderful performance by the Solo Horns. On my Clarinet choir holidays with hf holidays, have performed the Clarinet version for 4 Solo Clarinets. Have played the 4th/3rd & 2nd Solo parts on separate holidays since 2016. Great fun to play and Challenging too. Congratulations to the Soloists, leader, musician & maestro for this performance. Hands across the sea. Semper fi.

Another absolutely magnificent performance! I love that these ladies play so really beautifully. Thank you one and all as well as the conductor for lifting my spirits once again at the end of what seems to be an endless tumultuous period in our country. I can't tell you how much it means to me and to my husband to try to tune you folks in each day. Please do not stop! Also, I am a woman of 73 1/2 and love hearing the ladies play most of all as their music seems to sing to me. Would it be possible for them in the near future to do another of this type of performance? If so, I would be very grateful. If not, I understand you are very busy. Many many thanks for a wonderful musical experience!

Listening to this was laborious. Horn is a treacherous instrument. There are so many ways to make a mistake in tone production. These players did a wonderful job from a technical point of view. A few minor mistakes, but it is rare to hear this work without them, and it didn’t detract at all from a demonstration of technical prowess. There are comments about the band arrangement, but I don’t think that was the issue. This performance is totally lacking in any kind of feeling. People like the horn for its ability to command emotion in a unique and powerful way. This sounds like a technical exercise.

The performance was alright but I think they were missing some of the bravado that you will often hear with some German orchestras. The opening was possibly the most underwhelming but, although everything was correct and the tone was great, it didn't sound like a great horn call played by a group of hunters. I think that may be the feeling that they are missing. One of my favourite recordings is by Philharmonic State Orchestra Hamburg with Kent Nagano. It is by no means perfect but it encapsulates that kind of feeling. I won't comment on the concert band arrangement as that's not something they can change.

For some reason I really don't like this. Everything is right, yet something is off. Every recording I listen to of the Marine band nails every note and articulation, yet it seems to be missing something, but I can't put my finger on it 🤔 regardless, these women did fantastic! Bravo 👏

I agree. The accompaniment sounds like a midi file. The overall body of sound is missing too (i.e. all the percussion, strings)

@@saif_saleh_ Lets see, it is taken from an orchestral arrangement so blame the person who didn't transcribe it well enough. It isn't the fault of the players, blame the conductor who didn't pick a better arrangement.

C'est une oeuvre difficile dont j'ai fait modestement les trois mouvements, je crois que le tort d'un musicien et moi le premier est d'aller chercher la faute et là le musicien le sent, il doivent être protégés et non épiés. Sergiu Célibidache disait que notre tort était de faire une fixation sur tel ou tel instrument alors qu'on devrait écouter l'ensemble sans distinction de partie et là une forme de Vérité pourrait surgir. Cet orchestre des Marines est fabuleux, ces musiciens et ces musiciennes extraordinaires, pensons à eux tous nous qui sommes musiciens, la gestion du stress est parfois difficile et comme on le dit en France, il y a des jours avec et des jours sans., J'aime votre critique, puisse t'elle être constructive pour l'ensemble de notre art et des ses fabuleux artistes. They also are not playing "harsh" enough per say. Just comapre it to the berlin phil version.

They play it fairly well! But I agree: the main problem is the tempo. The piece is rarely performed at the marked 152bpm, but it should at least come close....

Yeah, I think it's a bit too slow, but there is a long history of transcribing orchestral works to concert band, and it has been proven very effective... Of course that depends on the orchestrators skills, but as a composer/orchestrator, there is no problem with bands playing orchestral repertoire at all.
