Freire's performance is the best I've ever heard of Schumann's Piano Concerto. He understands Schumann to the bones and serves superbly the music, not his own ego as so many other pianists do.
akak325 it's so evident that your ego answered in that way, it doesn't matter if Fabian plays or not piano, it's just he's opinion, it looks like you are that kind of pianist, you make that so evident to everybody since you fell offended with that opinion...
This is one of the best recordings I've heard of one of my favorite concertos. I'm ashamed to say I hadn't heard of Freire before, but I will look for other of his recordings now. Wonderful!
Pianist Nelson Freire is an astounding craftmanship in Schumann's piano concerto! Outstanding orchestra. Beautiful & uplifting. It doesn't get better than this!
aah Nelson Freire is such a wonderful pianist. Like little pearls trickling down. His performance in the concertgebouw Amsterdam was pure brilliance recently
Beautiful performance from a great pianist , who has been so for so many years, though, frequently underrated he is so unassumingly reliable to give an excellent performance.
I love this piece after hearing it in " Madame Sousastka" I have watched all of them on tube and love them all. So many talented pianist! I personally like Mr. Freire's smooth interpretation best. There are a lot of beautiful people in this orchestra!
one of most impressive video, good sound, HD, and most of all, Nelson Freire stars here I knew him only through the old vynal records Schumann, we don't have to talk about him
I adore his technique - the hands/fingers are so open (my personal unfavorite is the knuckled up finger technique that looks more like you're 'playing' a typewriter - Nelson's hands are so fluid and yet forceful where they need to be!
I heard over 12 different world class interpretation and none totally satisfied me but i know this concerto is very difficult to get in the hand, but it is so beautiful, i still hear it more beautifully in my mind than in live performances.
May be the "dislikers" had, at the time they saw this video, a bad stomach ache or even a hemorroids attack...Some people born to be beasts...Bravo Mr. Freire, your art and talent are worldwide recognized. Unforgetable !! JAL
A bravura performance and that amazing fingers of his 💖 Even the camera just barely caught it mid-air 🌀The orchestra is also superb ✨ & I'd never get tired from watching it 😍 Thx 4 sharing 👍
Really a first-class performance. Every pianist brings those special little touches that tells you,"Ah, that's Arrau" or "Can't miss him. Rubinstein." Freire was/is always a pianist of the highest ranks. It's just a shame there aren't more videos of him doing some of the other great standards. There is an interesting video of him and Argerich having a conversation in Portuguese at one of their houses. Argerich is sitting comfortably on the sofa; Freire is standing taking drags on a cigarette out of the side of his mouth. (gotta watch those cigarettes, Nelson. We don't want to lose a class-act like you too soon.)They're laughing, drinking and having a good time. Wish I knew what they were talking about. J Joe (also a composer of a piano concerto no. 2 in c minor)
There are many videos of him playing on RU-vid. And, also, that scene of him smoking while talking with Martha Argerich is in a documentary that is available on RU-vid in its entirety too.
In one scene they were speaking about the time they were young and met each other. He was 15 -- Martha, 19. He played a Brahms concerto on his knees once... And it was pretty much how Martha came to befriend him. Another scene, they just play the Bailecito for two pianos by Guastavino. For the first time. Martha says she couldn't sight read as well as him but end up playing along very well. By the way, he quit smoking when he was 60.
the sweet whisper of the orchestra accompanying the piano at 00:55 is the strongest and most impressive theme in the whole concert. I love it...so gentle...so genious...
First, I love this piece. Secondly, I have listened to piano (child) prodigies play this piece, and I must say that there is something to be said about how the more mature and experienced pianists approach playing Schumann's Piano Concerto (in A minor). There are very distinct, discernible, and notable nuances with the experienced pianists; more connectivity and fluidity, with less focus on the technical aspects, although still technical perfection in every sense of the word.
Nelson Freire's death was a regrettable loss. In addition to being an excellent pianist, a quiet, introspective personality and always modest, despite his recognized grandeur. My feelings to the widower, Mr. Miguel Rosário and his entire family.
I have heard this concerto given live many, many times (I also used to perform it.) Gilels, Lupu (my teacher knew him,) Perahia, Serkin... and a raft of less-known pianists. Serkin (with NYPO and Detroit Symphony,) turned in several electrifying performances, but I find this one with Freier exciting indeed. The orchestra seems not so polished, but is surely a good pairing for this live rendition. (I also highly enjoy the one with Argerich-Chailly.)
